Like I mentioned in this week’s episodic musing, know that you have options – and remember that you can harness the options you choose to be a guideline, like tools that will get you where you want to really go, having and doing what you really want.

Musings Episode 82: Options…

Hope everyone’s week is off to a great start. I remember talking to someone about options that a person has in every aspect of their life a while back…which pretty much inspired this week’s episodic musing. Let’s get started.

Musings Episode 82: Options

We Must Dare To Think Unthinkable Thoughts We Must Learn To Explore All The Options And Possibilities That Confront Us In A Complex And Rapidly Changing World J William Fulbright, Rego's Life, J William Fulbright quotes, Rego's Life quotes, J William Fulbright, Musings Episode 82 Options, Rego's Life, Musings Episode 82 Options Rego's Life, Rego's Life Musings Episode 82 Options, Options, life options, options quotes, how to assess your options, remember you have options, life choices, lifestyle, know you have options

I’d say in today’s time we live in a world of choice – lots of it. Largely on a consumer level, but on other levels too. There’s so many different forms of education, career choices, leisure time options, and ways of getting out and socialising that you’ll have people say the amount of options is overwhelming.

I’d say that’s bull.

Then, there are some who may feel like they don’t have any options.

That’s also bull.

True, there are an abundance of options out there, but if you’ve got focus, the options available hardly seem overwhelming and if anything, you can easily filter out the fluff.

When you think about it, the amount of options you have can actually help you have a better understanding of what it is you want out of life, in all aspects of life. Even feeling like you have no options at some point in life can force you to realise the options you do have, if you stay calm and think.

This is where focus comes in. The main thing is to use that focus to stay on track with whatever it is you want to accomplish.

Filtering is easy, but staying on track can sometimes be tricky – largely because it relies on consistency. As an entrepreneurial minded person I can attest to this.

I could have a number of ideas pop up in my head a week that seem like great business ideas. Where it gets tricky is staying consistent – sometimes it’s tempting to move on all of them at one time rather than planning things out methodically, or knocking out one at a time.

Thinking of so many ideas can open you up to so many options, even outside the entrepreneurial realm.

And having options means having access to different tools that can help you move any part of your life forward.

Knowledge creates options, and options are kind of like guide books that teach you which way you can use the tools you’ve uncovered through assessing your options.

The higher the level of people's perceived self-efficacy the wider the range of career options they seriously consider the greater their interest in them and the better they prepare themselves educationally for the occupational pursuits they choose Albert Bandura, Rego's Life, Albert Bandura quotes, Rego's Life quotes, Albert Bandura, Albert Bandura Options, Musings Episode 82 Options, Rego's Life, Musings Episode 82 Options Rego's Life, Rego's Life Musings Episode 82 Options, Options, life options, options quotes, how to assess your options, remember you have options, life choices, lifestyle, know you have options

If you’re from my generation, maybe you were taught that you could be anything when you were younger – and maybe you were taught to pick a safe career option as you got older.

This was always a confusing trend of thought to me. You’re told you can be anything (including Spider-Man) when you’re younger – but as you get older, family/society tells you to “think about your future” and “pick a safe career choice”? Something like a lawyer, doctor, etc?

Forget wanting to be top athlete or pro skateboarder, and opt for a nice, quiet office job?

While I know the above “safe” options can in theory of course be smart (and sometimes recession proof), it’s the line of thinking that’s a contradiction.

I mean I can see where (most) parents are coming from – they want their kids to have stability, not lack for anything, and a financially stress-free life so they can actually enjoy the years that pass by.

But I think always opting for the safe option can be self-sabotaging.

This is where I think a hybrid approach works best.

There’s some partial truth that there are obvious benefits to choosing a “safe” career – but only if you know what type of benefits you’re talking about.

I think if a person feels more comfortable going with a safe option – with anything in life – it’s better to only use it as a tool to get where you really want to go – to enable you to do what you really want to do.

I tell people Do what you love but it can also be hard to know what you love early on But when you think about it and you describe the options which one gets you a little more excited Brad D Smith, Rego's Life, Brad D Smith quotes, Rego's Life quotes, Brad D Smith, Brad D Smith options, Musings Episode 82 Options, Rego's Life, Musings Episode 82 Options Rego's Life, Rego's Life Musings Episode 82 Options, Options, life options, options quotes, how to assess your options, remember you have options, life choices, lifestyle, know you have options

In the context of business, picking a safe option really just means picking an option that gives you a steady source of cash flow over the required length of time it’s needed.

But it’s what you do with that cash flow that matters.

One thing I’ve learnt about being an entrepreneur – if you want to move anything forward, even outside of business, most of the time it takes cash flow, and time.

This can be with a hobby, travelling, a relationship, anything.

I really don’t get why people try and separate money from the equation when it comes to a lot of things they do in life.

If you want to learn how to play guitar, you’ve gotta first buy the guitar.

If you want to pursue a relationship, you’ve still gotta have the cash to meet up with the person – whether you’re driving or using public transportation. Even if you’re walking, if you wanna go and grab a bite (or make a bite to eat) it still takes cash.

Hell, even if you want to get in better shape you’ve gotta have the cash to eat properly.

There’s an interesting quote I’m fond of…

Money is only a vehicle that provides you with options and I say there's only one thing that money can't buy poverty Jerry Doyle, Rego's Life, Jerry Doyle quotes, Rego's Life quotes, Jerry Doyle, Musings Episode 82 Options, Rego's Life, Musings Episode 82 Options Rego's Life, Rego's Life Musings Episode 82 Options, Options, life options, options quotes, how to assess your options, remember you have options, life choices, lifestyle, know you have options, Jerry Doyle options

Now this blog post isn’t to talk about money – but I can say that money, like knowledge, can give you more options.

And I can say that it’s important to realise that everyone, and I do mean everyone, has options.

The main thing is, you’ve got to pick what options are right for YOU.

Only you.

Nobody else can or should feel like they can dictate to you what your options are. It’s your life, you’ve got to live it, and you’ve got to deal with the results that the options you pick give you.

At the end of the day, you’ve got to do what feels right for you.

Choose your options wisely. Choose how to use your tools wisely.

Just for fun I’m gonna leave you with one of my favourite songs this year:

Musings Episode 81: Consistency…

Hope everyone’s week is off to a good start. Lately I’ve been working towards adding some new daily habits into my life, and that made me think about how important consistency is when trying out something new that you want to get yourself used to doing on a, well, consistent basis.

Then I thought about this post. Let’s get started.

Musings Episode 81: Consistency…

Success isn't always about greatness It's about consistency Consistent hard work leads to success Greatness will come Dwayne Johnson, Rego's Life quotes, Dwayne Johnson quotes, Dwayne Johnson, Consistency quotes, quotes, Musings Episode 81 Consistency, Rego's Life Musings Episode 81 Consistency, Musings Episode 81 Consistency Rego's Life, Rego's Life, Consistency, Consistent, How to be consistent, how to stay consistent, how to develop consistency, consistency in work, how to be consistent in life, life goals, milestones, consistency and goals, goals take consistency, Episodic Musings, Episodic Musings Rego's Life, Rego's Life Episodic Musings, Episodic Musings of a Quintessential Entrepreneur, Rego's Life Episodic Musings of a Quintessential Entrepreneur, Episodic Musings of a Quintessential Entrepreneur Rego's Life

So the topic of consistency has been bouncing around in my head a lot since the last musing. I’m a big fan of the website T-Nation, and while other people may bash them about their supplement prices, they don’t force you to buy them (so shuddup), and they’ve got some damn fine reading material.

One particular article talked about progress in workouts, and how the key lies in consistency. It takes about 21 days of daily, consistent completion of a workout, for the brain to “programme” itself into forming a habit – 21 days – the same amount of time it takes for you to visibly see progress with your physique when you workout and eat right.

The key is also in the timing – doing it at roughly the same time everyday…the same way you would with waking up, eating, or going to bed.

But this whole 21 day concept doesn’t just stop at working out, it applies to all aspects of life.

I remember a year or so back I wanted to improve different aspects of my memory – so I tried memory games for 21 days. While the first week was a bit of a struggle (making myself sit down and take out the time just sit still and do something which seemed so simple), after three weeks I had a noticeable difference in memory improvement (and I already had a sharp mind before that, mind you).

Consistency is one ingredient of several that make up the whole recipe of moving in the direction that you want.

One thing guys have to remember is consistency You can't make up for three years of eating poorly in just one workout Apolo Ohno, Rego's Life quotes, Apolo Ohno quotes, Apolo Ohno, Consistency quotes, quotes, Musings Episode 81 Consistency, Rego's Life Musings Episode 81 Consistency, Musings Episode 81 Consistency Rego's Life, Rego's Life, Consistency, Consistent, How to be consistent, how to stay consistent, how to develop consistency, consistency in work, how to be consistent in life, life goals, milestones, consistency and goals, goals take consistency, Episodic Musings, Episodic Musings Rego's Life, Rego's Life Episodic Musings, Episodic Musings of a Quintessential Entrepreneur, Rego's Life Episodic Musings of a Quintessential Entrepreneur, Episodic Musings of a Quintessential Entrepreneur Rego's Life

Like I mentioned in my last episodic musing, there are a range of other ingredients involved – standards, drive, quality relationships, comfort zones – that you have to take into account when planning and executing whatever it is you want to accomplish.

But in order to get the recipe’s results right, you’ve got to make sure you add in consistency bit by bit – it’s got to be part of each phase of the process.

You can have high standards, have the drive to achieve those standards, take your confidence from your comfort zone and help yourself get ready to progress towards something better, but if you don’t stay consistent – a milestone that you may want to achieve in a year, a month, a week – can easily turn into 3 years, 3 months, 3 weeks.

It’s like learning a language – there are language courses out there that you can learn fluency in any given language to an intermediate level in 2-3 weeks; considering it takes about 1000 words to reach fluency, in theory this doesn’t sound all too difficult – and it isn’t.

If you studied everyday, for 3 weeks, you could reach this.

But if you studied on and off, took a day off here, another one there, and maybe only ended up studying once or twice a week, it’d take you significantly longer. You may even have to revise the stuff you learnt the week prior just because you’re not using it on a frequent enough basis to retain it.

This is why consistency is so important.

When you look at people who are successful you will find that they aren't the people who are motivated but have consistency in their motivation Arsene Wenger, Rego's Life quotes, Arsene Wenger quotes, Arsene Wenger, Consistency quotes, quotes, Musings Episode 81 Consistency, Rego's Life Musings Episode 81 Consistency, Musings Episode 81 Consistency Rego's Life, Rego's Life, Consistency, Consistent, How to be consistent, how to stay consistent, how to develop consistency, consistency in work, how to be consistent in life, life goals, milestones, consistency and goals, goals take consistency, Episodic Musings, Episodic Musings Rego's Life, Rego's Life Episodic Musings, Episodic Musings of a Quintessential Entrepreneur, Rego's Life Episodic Musings of a Quintessential Entrepreneur, Episodic Musings of a Quintessential Entrepreneur Rego's Life

It’s what makes all the difference in your workouts, your diet, your education, your work, your business, everything.

Without consistency, while you may get things done eventually, you won’t necessairily get them done in the time that you want, or need.

You’ve also gotta factor in other people – which is why quality relationships are important – when thinking about accomplishing what you want to get done.

You can have the drive, the standards, the consistency – but you’ve got to be around and connect with people who won’t throw a wrench in the gears, so to speak.

If what you’re trying to accomplish involves cooperation with other people, you’ve got to make sure you’re working with cooperative people.

People who think that there’s not enough to go around, that you’re competition, that you may end up acquiring more than them (not that it would matter – we’ve all got our own path), cane be the absolute bane of consistency if they are a critical component in helping you move things forward.

You’ve gotta be around good people.

It’s amazing how there are a lot of factors involved here – a lot of little factors that make up the big picture.

Standards, drive, comfort zones, discipline, competition, cooperation, consistency – you could master one but one single factor wouldn’t be the only thing to pull you through, to get things done.

You’ve got to work at each one individually, bit by bit.

I know sometimes that can seem pretty annoying or cumbersome – but it’s about maintaining a balance.

The same way it’s wise for a person to avoid muscle imbalances by making sure they train all their muscles week to week, the same way it’s wise to maintain a balance approach when it comes to accomplishing what you’ve set out to do.

The hardest thing about skateboarding is consistency The slightest flick of your foot or gust of wind can send your board flying so it's really anybody's game out there Shaun White, Rego's Life quotes, Shaun White quotes, Consistency quotes, quotes, Musings Episode 81 Consistency, Rego's Life Musings Episode 81 Consistency, Musings Episode 81 Consistency Rego's Life, Rego's Life, Consistency, Consistent, How to be consistent, how to stay consistent, how to develop consistency, consistency in work, how to be consistent in life, life goals, milestones, consistency and goals, goals take consistency, Episodic Musings, Episodic Musings Rego's Life, Rego's Life Episodic Musings, Episodic Musings of a Quintessential Entrepreneur, Rego's Life Episodic Musings of a Quintessential Entrepreneur, Episodic Musings of a Quintessential Entrepreneur Rego's Life

You’ve got to work on each factor individually, bit by bit.

But most importantly, you’ve got to remember that consistency is what keeps it all together.

It’s what turns those incrimental, small pieces of the puzzle, into the big picture.

Consistency is crucial.

Consistency is key.

Stay awesome.

Like I mentioned in this week’s episodic musing, your competition is not other people. There is no such thing as competition – it’s about being a better version of yourself than you were yesterday.

It’s about being around people that are good for YOU – not just the other way around. It’s about remembering that there is no such thing as lack – but there is such a thing as a lack of people cooperating with each other more and more these days – the latter being something that people will still try and manipulate for their own benefit.

Don’t let you stop you – let alone someone else stop you. But more importantly, if you see someone trying to contribute something to the world, trying to better themselves, without stepping on other people’s toes or crushing another person’s throat – don’t pull them down.

Musings Episode 80: Competition…

Since I talked about the pros and cons of comfort zones in the last episodic musing, I figure it’d only be right to have an appropriate follow up. This one’s for the millenials. Hell, this one’s for everyone. Let’s get started.

Musings Episode 80: Competition…

The biggest competition is myself I am not looking to follow others or pull them down I'm planning to test my own boundaries Rain, Rego's Life quotes, Bi Rain quotes, Rain quotes, Bi Rain, competition quotes, Musings Episode 80 Competition, Rego's Life Musings Episode 80 Competition, Musings Episode 80 Competition Rego's Life, Rego's Life, competition, you vs you, me vs me, the only competition is yourself, competitive, life, millenials, succcess, drive, comfort zones, self-confidence, how to beat the competition, how to win, win, how to win at life, karma, competition quote, university, work, motivational, inspirational, how to live life, how to live life to the fullest, ignore the haters, believe in yourself

So, last episodic musing you figured out there are some pros to comfort zones…along with understanding how to harness them during transitions you may have going on in other aspects of your life.

But there’s something else you’ve got to think about – competition – and I don’t mean in the conventional sense.

In other words, technically, no one is your competition.

No one.

The only person you’re ever really in competition with is yourself.

“Standing on the shoulders of giants; climbing the corporate ladder,” these cliche sayings are unnecessary.

It’s unnecessary to step on other people’s toes in order to get ahead – or their shoulders for that matter.

There are people that exist that may tell you there’s not enough caviar to go around – that there’s not enough pie to share and you’ve got to focus on grabbing your piece before anyone else – but it’s just not true.

What society has been feeding people is a message of lack.

Lack fuels panic.

Lack fuels stress.

Lack fuels anxiety.

Lack fuels BAD selfishness (there is such a thing as good selfishness).

There is no such thing as lack.

Nature is based on harmony So it says if we want to survive and become more like nature then we actually have to understand that it's cooperation versus competition Bruce Lipton, Rego's Life quotes, Bruce Lipton quotes, Bruce Lipton, competition quotes, Musings Episode 80 Competition, Rego's Life Musings Episode 80 Competition, Musings Episode 80 Competition Rego's Life, Rego's Life, competition, you vs you, me vs me, the only competition is yourself, competitive, life, millenials, succcess, drive, comfort zones, self-confidence, how to beat the competition, how to win, win, how to win at life, karma, competition quote, university, work, motivational, inspirational, how to live life, how to live life to the fullest, ignore the haters, believe in yourself
There are such things, as assholes though. Selfish, greedy, assholes, that often like to take shortcuts. The quick success. The quick buck. The quick fuck. The flash car. The fancy title. The big house. Quick quick quick. Instant gratification, at the sacrifice of others.

There’s no such thing as sacrifice.

Sacrifice seems to be built up these days as a glorious thing to do – but essentially when you strip it down, it’s two things: either giving up something you already love for something else you love, or feeling you have to crush others to get where you want to go.

It’s a joke…and it doesn’t have to be so.

There is more corruption and greed laced into corporations and organisations today than there was almost 30 years ago, and I think this is being bred primarily from this “lack” thought process.

This all ties in with competition.

People have been led to believe the guy next to them in an interview room is their competition.

But really, it’s not about competing with anybody – not even yourself.

It’s about building a better version of YOU.

Constantly working on being yourself, improving yourself, becoming a better person than you were yesterday.

When you focus on this, you end up being too busy to look at what other people are doing.

You develop tunnel vision. You seek your own finish line – rather than trying to race someone to theirs.

You end up becoming such a fantastic version of yourself, you don’t worry about the guy next to you, because you know you have something to bring to the table that’s unique to YOU.

Forget about being a carbon copy.

You know you have something to contribute to the world.

You know you have something that you can leave your mark with.

You know YOU – something that when the last company falls, and the last pound, euro, or dollar is spent, no one can take away from you – the art of self-improvement.

It's not really about the competition Your biggest challenge in a race is yourself You're often racing against time You're frequently running everything through your mind You're always competing against preconceived ideas It's not really the person next to you that you worry about Summer Sanders, Rego's Life quotes, Summer Sanders quotes, Summer Sanders, competition quotes, Musings Episode 80 Competition, Rego's Life Musings Episode 80 Competition, Musings Episode 80 Competition Rego's Life, Rego's Life, competition, you vs you, me vs me, the only competition is yourself, competitive, life, millenials, succcess, drive, comfort zones, self-confidence, how to beat the competition, how to win, win, how to win at life, karma, competition quote, university, work, motivational, inspirational, how to live life, how to live life to the fullest, ignore the haters, believe in yourself
The other main thing to remember is, is that this is the single most important thing to remind yourself of everyday.

Because there are people out there who will try and tell you that you’re no good. That someone’s better than you. Hell, there are people that will try and tell you that you’re overqualified, and credit that as a logical reason for still not giving you what you want.

What you have to understand is, is that their opinion has nothing to do with you.

Because the same way you’ve been taught that there is lack, that there is competition, they may very well be approaching you with the same thought process.

But all that matters is what you want to do with your own life.

They do not have the right to tell you what to do with your life.

This is largely why I think unemployment is becoming greater.

That mindset, that lacking, competitive, insecure, fearful, selfish mindset has the potential (and often does) to bleed into people’s professional lives, the potential to create a loop.

Recruiters ego’s become enlarged, the power they’ve been given can make them feel like gods, determining someone’s short or long-term financial future at the click of a button.

The lack is false – it’s simply misplaced power with zero social responsibility.

The surging increase in idiocy, of this thing called “human resources” is insane. Do not heed to it.

Competition has been shown to be useful up to a certain point and no further but cooperation which is the thing we must strive for today begins where competition leaves off Franklin D Roosevelt, Rego's Life quotes, Franklin D Roosevelt quotes, Franklin D Roosevelt, competition quotes, Musings Episode 80 Competition, Rego's Life Musings Episode 80 Competition, Musings Episode 80 Competition Rego's Life, Rego's Life, competition, you vs you, me vs me, the only competition is yourself, competitive, life, millenials, succcess, drive, comfort zones, self-confidence, how to beat the competition, how to win, win, how to win at life, karma, competition quote, university, work, motivational, inspirational, how to live life, how to live life to the fullest, ignore the haters, believe in yourself
The only person to compete against, the only person to improve, is yesterday’s version of yourself. Other people are only a reference point – and if you’re going to have a reference point, let it be someone positive – someone successful, someone REAL.

But at the end of the day, if you’re putting in the work, you’ll know where you rank – and if you’re not putting in the work, you’ll know that too. The guilt of not making a better version of yourself will eat at your gut – your instincts will nag at you.

Work on yourself, work on what you love to do, then take a break. Analyse your progress. Change your angle if need be. Maintain this balance. Then do it all again.

But remember – there is no such thing, as competition.

There is only you, and how good you want to be at something.

Think about it.
