Here we are…the home stretch. You’ve learned about the essential mixers. Started collecting the key liqueurs. Now it’s time to educate yourself on the last, but certainly not least finishing touch – garnishes. Here goes…
For The Weekenders: Bar Essentials Part 3
Like the cherry on top, cocktail garnishes are that small but important finishing touch that makes every cocktail unique and adds that last bit of essential flavour to each and every one of your most favourite mixed drinks.
It’s one thing if you can churn out a proper drink at home with friends/guest over – it’s another thing if you can make the drinks feel like their favourite bar tender made it.
Going the whole 9 yards when it comes to making great drinks is the baby step into the world of mixology. So don’t think for a second that you’re getting all “fancy” just because you throw some salt rimmed glasses into the mix.
Creating the perfect drink is sacred as much as it is an art – something you should take pride in every time you do it – very similar to that of making spice tea (shit gets serious when I make spice tea).
So here’s a very short but important list of the absolutely essential garnishes:
- Maraschino Cherries
- Limes
- Lemons
- Oranges
Along with another list of garnishes that I consider great to keep in stock, starting with my favorites:
- Cinnamon
- Olives
- Sugar
- Mint
- Nutmeg
- Whipped Cream
- Salt
- Celery
- Cocktail Onions
Paired with great liquors, vital mixers, and tasty liqueurs, all that remains is a few great bar tendering tricks and you’ve got yourself a night in with friends turned epic.
As always…
Stay awesome.
