For The Weekenders: Rhodes to Greece, Absinthe Gummy Bears, Vinho Fuelled Polo in Argentina…

Hope everyone recovered fully from last week’s St. Patrick’s Day.

You’ll need to if you really want to be in top form for the things suggested in this week’s For The Weekenders.

Let’s start.

For The Weekenders: Rhodes to Greece, Absinthe Gummy Bears, Vinho Fuelled Polo in Argentina…

There’s so many things to do in this life it’s a wonder why people ever say they’re bored.

Even though the weather’s been pretty crappy and cold in a lot of different areas, there’s always a sun behind the clouds and warmth beyond the cold.

Like in Greece.

Ahh, Greece…despite what the EU may say about it financially, it’s one of those places that you just have to love.

Which begs the question – who’s more rich – the country with the most financial stability, or the country who’s environment nourishes your heart and soul?

I’d say both.

Why can’t we just have both in one place?

Or more accurately…can’t, or won’t?

Whichever way you want to answer that question, in the end all roads lead to Greece – Rhodes, Greece, that is (see what I did there?).

So here’s what you’ll do. Say you’re taking a personal day…which is really a week, and charter a flight to Rhodes Airport. Don’t worry about packing too much here – just comfy clothes (linen? Maybe a nice light chambray weave?), and other bare essentials.

Check-in to Casa Cook Rhodes, and be escorted to your suite with private pool and terrace that you booked prior to arrival.

I seriously hope you brought someone along with you.

Complete with outdoor rain shower, premium quality mattresses (*wink*), a minibar, and an indoor whirlpool, you’ll find it easy to melt the jet lag away so you can enjoy your stay to the fullest extent humanly possible.

I recommend having a hot shower then going for a quick soak, before refuelling after a (not really at all that gruelling) flight over.

If you can get your play date to join you then hey, the more the merrier.

You’ll probably want to rest up for what lies in store – there’s a lot to do in Rhodes.

Or, if you’re feeling adventurous and athletic, play the night away – just remember to be ready in the morning.

“For what“, you ask?

A full day of sailing…duh.

Well, technically sailing…but mostly lounging, for you.

You’ll have a wonderful little skipper who’ll steer you through various bays and springs, while you lounge on the deck absorbing some seriously glorious sun waves, sipping something cool and refreshing, before convincing your play date to go for a swim, as naturally, while staying dry is great and all, things are much more fun in the water.

After an exhausting day of…relaxing, treat yourself to some locally sourced dinner.

I’m thinking maybe Feta Lagoridani with a salad to start, a mixed grill platter to share for 2, and some Kataifi for dessert…naturally, polished off with an Espresso Highball.

You’ll need a couple of hours to digest all that food you stuffed your smug face with, so feel free to lounge on your terrace, before slipping into the pool for a late night swim with someone sexy.

I recommend sharing a carafe of Pathos, consisting of Metaxa Greek Spirit, Greek dry red wine, some seasonal fruit and traditional botanicals.

A private pool is important.

You want it private.

Why? (Are you really that dense?)

Without sugar coating it…so you can have some private time, of course – without some old retired lady exclaiming, praying for you, then proceeding to throw holy water at you and your special someone.

Nobody likes holy water thrown at them.

Besides being mildly cold (the temperature, not the act), it’s also just like…really inconvenient.

Plus, it kills the buzz from those absinthe gummy bears you made with the silicon mold and absinthe you brought along, in addition to all those “essential items” you stepped out to go shopping for when you touched down.

Wait – you didn’t do that?

You’ve never HAD those?

Jesus Christ…where have you been living? The great depression?

(the 1920’s one – not the 2008 one.)

Well, let’s fix that…for starters, you don’t have to buy them anywhere – plus, they’re not really that easy to buy.

So here’s how to make your own.

You’re welcome.

Absinthe Gummy Bears

Absinthe isn’t something that just has to be enjoyed via a cocktail.

If childhood favorites, and adult indulgences had a baby, it would be this exact gummy bear treat.

You’ll need a few things, but nothing that’s too much of a hassle to acquire:

  • 1 Cup of Water
  • .5 Cup of Absinthe
    • A quality one.
  • .25 Cup of Sugar
  • 1 Vitamin B2 Tab
  • Food Coloring (Green)
  • Silicon mold to make all this stuff into actual gummy bears

Take your water and pour it into a saucepan with no heat under it.

Now dust your gelatin into there.

You’ll have to be a little patient, allowing for your gelatin to bloom for about 10 minutes. Only after that, do you want to put some medium heat under it.

While you’re waiting for that to reach a boil, now would be a good time to take that Vitamin B2 tab I told you about and crush it into a powder.

Once you’re done with that, grab your sugar and food coloring, and dust them slowly into the mixture in your saucepan, letting it simmer until the sugar dissolves completely.

Take your saucepan off the heat, then go ahead and add your powdered B2 and absinthe. Stir everything up until it’s all mixed well and the B2 has dissolved completely.

Now for the fun part.

Take your silicon molds and get everything in there. Toss them in the fridge and be patient – considering the sheer amount of gelatin you used, they won’t take long to set.

Fair warning – these gummy bears may provide a hallucinogenic affect.

Just a tad.

(Unless that is, you’re that much of an asshole one actually flips you the bird.)

So don’t go overboard with them, and definitely don’t eat the whole batch. Everything in moderation.

Nonetheless, they’re a great treat to share with your play date when you’re outside lounging in the pool and listening to some choice music.

…and by choice music I mean this.

Not Katy Perry. Not for this mood (sorry, Katy).

If you’re tired of lounging and are up for getting into something a little more adventurous, it’s probably time to kiss Greece goodbye and head Southwest.

As in, Argentina.

If you’re more of the athletic type, then naturally you’ll want a full day of Polo in Argentina.

Not as adventurous as elephant Polo in India, but still just as fun.

Still athletic but never played polo?

No problem – Argentina Polo Day has intensive Polo lessons for you that’ll bring you up to speed in no time.

First thing’s first. Charter a flight to Buenos Aires Ezeiza International Airport, then get the guys at Argentina Polo Day to arrange transport to get you to this Polo paradise.

It’d probably be a good idea to bring some friends or family along with you, as Polo’s a team sport.

You’ll have some pretty cushy accommodation waiting, in addition to other activities in case you don’t just feel like playing Polo during your entire stay.

You should be flinching – the future is now old man, step aside.

Like watching the pros play the game for you. At night.

Or maybe some tango lessons to impress that person you’ve been seeing for a while now.

If you really feel like spreading your wings a little and taking in the sights, I’d opt for a bird’s eye view with a heli-tour.

Whatever you want to do these guys will do their best to accommodate (just don’t go overboard – they won’t be your therapist for that divorce you’re going through).

You may be a little nervous the first time around. Maybe you’re the shy type, and feel a little awkward when trying something new.

Especially if you’ve got someone you (feel you) have to impress.

Don’t sweat it – Argentina is known for serving up some great liquid courage, so a little vinho (that’s wine), might help before the official match.

I cannot, however, guarantee what the effects of said wine will be like during your match, though.

Either way, that counts as an energy drink, right?

For The Weekenders: First Snow, Spiked Hot Chocolate, and My Hot Toddy…

Winter’s got me having the feels for all things comfy, cozy, and sprinkled liberally with liquor.

Yeah.

Anyway…let’s get started.

For The Weekenders: First Snow, Spiked Hot Chocolate, and My Hot Toddy…

With the first snow comes cold, and with cold comes…feeling cold.

Naturally, the rational thing to do is warm up – with something or someone.

Like hot chocolate.

Or a hot body.

Or both.

I like both.

Both are fun.

I’m feeling pretty low key this week…thought I’d switch things up.

Get a little more personal.

And at the end of this post let you delve into the life of yours truly.

Creature comforts, personal relationships and all that.

So here’s some winter cocktail ideas with some fun back stories to warm you up during this cold spell.

First Snow

The first snow is always a little, magical. It comes in quiet, when you’re not looking, and then surprises you when you decide to actually observe your surroundings.

The best part is when you catch it untouched – no tire tracks, no footprints, just one pure sheet of flawless wonder.

It’s a moment you can only catch once, and that you try to hold onto for as long as possible in your memory.

Well there’s good news.

There’s a way to make that memory stretch.

With this cocktail, named after (you guessed it) The First Snow.

Break out your best mixology skills here and saunter over to your mini-bar for a quick lesson on how to be more suave during the winter.

Or you know…just look impressive when you’re at your favourite lounge bar with that special someone and want to look like you really know your stuff, as you school the bartender on how to do his job.

You’ll need:

  • Superfine Bar Sugar (for rimming the glass)
  • 1.25 oz. Rye Whiskey
  • 1.25 oz. Winter Syrup
  • .5 oz. Cranberry Juice
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick (for garnish)

First things first…

You’ll have to rim a martini glass with the sugar, then set it aside.

Now grab your whiskey, Winter Syrup, and Cranberry Juice, and pour it all into a cocktail shaker that has ice in it.

Shake all those ingredients well, for around 15-20 seconds…then strain it all into that same sugar-rimmed martini glass you set aside.

Take that cinnamon stick I talked about earlier and place it as a garnish.

Enjoy.

“But Rego, I don’t know how to make Winter Syrup”.

That’s like, drinks 101.

Alright well, stay cool…you can make your own that’ll last you for about a month – and give you an excuse to make more of this winter favorite so…you’re welcome.

So for the Winter Syrup, you’ll need:

  • 2 Cups Granulated Sugar
  • 2 Cups Water
  • 2 Whole Cinnamon Sticks
  • 1/2 tsp Ground Nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp Ground Allspice
  • 1/8 tsp White Peppercorns
  • 1/8 tsp Cloves

Once you’re done foraging for these necessary provisions, grab a medium saucepan.

Put your sugar, water, cinnamon sticks, allspice, nutmeg, cloves, and peppercorns in there.

Now heat everything over a medium heat until you’ve got your water just below boiling, making sure you stir everything well in order to make sure the sugar dissolves completely (this is important, dammit).

Take your saucepan off the heat, and let your syrup cool until it’s room temperature.

Grab a mason jar (it’s really important that it’s a mason jar), pour the syrup in there, seal it, and (gently) toss it in the fridge.

You’ve gotta have some patience here.

Let it sit in your fridge for a week, then strain out the peppercorns, cloves, and cinnamon sticks.

Take another mason jar (a clean one), pour the syrup in it, seal it, and pop it back in the fridge.

Or, you know, use it, for the above cocktail recipe.

Hot chocolate is good.

Liqueur is better.

Hot chocolate spiked with liqueur is great.

When it gets cold, I drink a lot of hot beverages.

A lot.

I’m a fan of coffee and hot chocolate – not really a tea drinker (partly because I suck at making tea – except for spice tea I do a pretty bang up job of making that)…but hot chocolate is one of my all time favourites.

Considering most franchise coffee shops can’t make a good cup of espresso to save their lives (there are few, and they are legends), it’s what I opt for when I’m being asked to sit at a coffee shop and socialise with other people I’ve known for a while…or new ones.

But generally, it’s not socially acceptable to slip the barista some alcohol and ask him to spike your drink.

Nor is it acceptable to spike your own drink, apparently – otherwise that mother with her child wouldn’t be giving me the stink eye whenever I whip out a flask.

When you’re at home though, everything’s fair game.

Wanna act like you’re the only one in line? Go for it.

Spike your hot chocolate? Be my guest.

Walk around naked? Go wild.

You get the idea.

Here’s how to do it (the spiking – not the nudity) properly.

You’ll need:

  • A decent hot chocolate.
    • 8 oz. of it.
  • 1 oz. Frangelico Hazelnut Liqueur
  • 1/2 oz. Nux Alpina Walnut Liqueur
  • A Dollop of Freshly Whipped Cream (do it right – none of this pre-whipped business)
  • Mint Leaves (fresh, for garnish)

Make your hot chocolate – whichever one is your favourite, but just make sure it’s quality.

Add in your hazelnut and walnut liqueur and stir everything together well – use your bar spoon for this.

Top it off with that freshly whipped cream you slaved over making, and garnish with some mint leaves (let’s say, about a sprig).

Done.

There’s a reason for using walnut and hazelnut liqueurs…they add depth to the cocoa base.

This is perfect for when you’re sitting by the fire with your hot toddy – aka that special someone.

Speaking of – I promised you a story with a little insight into me, didn’t I?

Rewind 7 years ago.

I was in Seoul visiting a friend when we decided to go out one night and hit up this really great lounge bar (and I cannot seem to remember the name of it – it was in Korean, don’t blame me).

We were walking up to the bar and there she was.

Beautiful.

Sexy.

Hot.

So hot in fact I could swear I heard the song “Hot Tottie” ft. Jay-Z by Usher playing in the background.

Just what the doctor ordered, in fact.

Especially after recently having gone through a breakup and having a hectic rebound streak.

It’s a gift.

I knew right then she was the one.

So I straightened up my posture, walked up to the bar, looked right at her before looking the bar tender dead in the eye and said as calmly and smoothly as possible…

“I’ll have one of those.”

And then proceeded to watch him make me the best Hot Toddy I’d ever had in my life.

….what?

You thought this was a romance story about me and someone I love?

Well no…but it’s about some thing I love…

And that’s pretty much the same thing…right?

No?

You don’t need to have a cold or a sore throat to have this – you just need to have a desire to heal whatever ails you.

For starters, you’ll need:

  • 1.5 oz. Bourbon
  • .5 oz. Lemon Juice (Freshly Squeezed)
  • Boiling Water
  • 1 tsp Clover Honey
  • 3 Whole Cloves
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick
  • 1 Lemon Wedge (for garnish)

You’ll need (obviously) a heated hot toddy glass.

Combine the bourbon, lemon juice, clover honey, cloves, and cinnamon stick in said glass.

Fill the rest of the glass with boiling water, then stir until all the honey is dissolved.

Top it off with a lemon wedge for garnish.

Baby, it’s cold outside.

Stay cool warm.

For The Weekenders: Bar Essentials Part 2

Apologies for the delay ladies and gents, been a busy week for me but alas, here I am making sure your weekly fix of For The Weekenders is delivered to you fresh out of the oven.

Continuing on from last week’s For The Weekenders: Bar Essentials Part 1, this week will be along the same lines except less focus on the mixers, and more on the liqueurs. Liqueurs are extremely important to have stocked in your home bar at all times, and the best bit is they last a long time, so can be acquired gradually and for a decent price, compared to your base liquors. Enjoy.

For The Weekenders: Bar Essentials Part 2

Let’s start with the most common liqueurs that are, and should be stocked in every home bar. If you don’t have these, you’re missing out on an opportunity to make those great drinks you overpay for whenever heading out for a night on the town. So hit up your local liquor store and start with…

As I said earlier, liqueurs last quite a long time, so buying these isn’t so much of a rush as it is like mixers. Whichever ones you like the most you can begin acquiring, and go from there.

If you really feel like getting crafty or have a specific drinking taste, there’s also some more liqueurs that can be added to your inventory other than the ones above. They’re not as “essential” as the list above, but should still be stocked if you’re interested in a good variety.

The last list really does depend on your taste, but if you’re just looking to stock your bar for entertaining friends and the occasional drink, start with the first list. Hope everyone’s had a great weekend and look out for part 3 next week. 😉

As always…

Stay awesome.

For The Weekenders: Three More Liquors You Should Know About…

Since the last For The Weekenders got so many views, figured I’d continue the trend this week. So here’s three more liquors you should know about. Enjoy.

For The Weekenders: Three More Liquors You Should Know About…

For The Weekenders Three More Liquors You Should Know About, Rego's Life For The Weekenders Three More Liquors You Should Know About, Rego's Life For The Weekenders, Rego's Life, regoslife, liquor, alcohol, tequila, absinthe, vodka, stolichnaya, absinthe original, espolon tequila

Quality liquor is a vital key in having a decent get together. Here’s three quality liquors that won’t leave you hanging when you’re looking for drinks that taste great, start great, and end smooth. Out of the various brands tried, these are my personal favorites.

When you’re looking for a happy drink, choose tequila. More appropriately, Espolón Tequila. Not a lot of tequilas you can drink straight without a chaser or being chilled – this is not one of those tequilas. Usually I like to have mixers with tequila – this is not one of those tequilas.

Espolón Tequila Blanco has a nice start, light to medium bodied palate and a strong agave flavor. Really take the time out to taste it and your taste buds will pick up hints of pepper, vanilla bean, and (interestingly enough) pineapple. To top it all off it’s got a nice, smooth finish. What more could you ask for? Another great tequila from Espolón is Espolón Reposado, a much bolder, aged tequila, which you can use in this recipe:

If you’re really into cocktails, the Decolletage is for you. The name itself perks the ears up, and if any of you have seen the movie Alfie (Jude Law version), you’ll laugh a little every time you drink this:

Decolletage

1.5 oz. Espolón Reposado tequila
1 oz. Dubonnet Rouge
.5 oz. ounce Aperol
.25 oz. Fernet Branca
orange twist to garnish

Get a mixing glass and stir all the ingredients over ice, then strain into a double old fashioned glass. Break the orange twist over the drink, allowing the citrus oils to blend in, then add it as the garnish. Simple enough to make at home with any standard mini bar.

….but tequila’s not for everyone. Especially not the “angry” drunks. It’s been known to sever friendships after one too many shots. The alternative? No, not beer….absinthe, my young, boozy apostle. Absinthe. One thing I can say I love about Europe – the plethora of absinthe. The absinthe you find out in the states just isn’t the same as the kind you find in Europe, and it’s said to be made up of synthetic ingredients. Not good. Huge no.

Absinthe Original is what I used to have – which, might I add, I haven’t in quite some time. Absinthe is one of those drinks best enjoyed with a date you want to get intimate with, or a really, really close group of friends. It’s the friendly drink. The drink that makes you feel awesome, mellow, cool. The drink that no matter what should not be abused…but respected.

Though the best way to be had is straight mixed with melted sugar, there is one drink you absolutely must try…

Dead Man’s Mule – it’s not as bad as it sounds, BUT, I highly advise you have two of these MAXIMUM, and not a drop more.

1 shot Absinthe (duh.)
1 shot Goldschlager (cinnamon schnapps)
.75 shot Orgeat (syrup)
.75 shot lime juice
Top it off with ginger beer
Garnish with a decent lime wedge or two
1 long slice of ginger

Shake and strain the first four ingredients, then top it off with ginger beer. If you’re not used to the taste of absinthe, have it over ice in a collins glass or my favorite, mason jar. Add a lime wedge to garnish, cut one thick slice of ginger, and add it into the glass so the ginger juices can mix with the alcohol.

I used to drink this back in uni all the time and I can still say today it’s one of my favorite drinks.

Alright so you’ve had a taste of Latin America. You’ve had a taste of the Western Europe. Now let’s head East…but not too far east. Just enough to land us in Mother Russia – yeah, you got it: vodka. Not just any vodka. No, not Smirnoff. Not Grey Goose. Not even Absolut. Real vodka. Vodka that’ll put hair on your chest and fire in your heart…

….and the only one that comes to mind is Stolichnaya.

I used to be a fan of Absolut, until I saw the light. Yes, Absolut is smooth, clean…but somehow, one day it just stopped mixing (pardon the pun) well with me. So I switched…and lo and behold that switch introduced me to Stoli.

This one starts, and finishes smooth, with citrusy hints the same way I like my gin. Vodka is one of those drinks that should be enjoyed on it’s own, on the rocks. As I ‘ve said many times before, though there are a lot of tasty drinks out there, sometimes if I’m on a strict fitness routine and I’m changing up for strength/stamina, I’ll lay off on the drinking a bit and just go with something boring like vodka soda – and no, that doesn’t mean I’m some calorie obsessed asshole. It just means I’m conscientious when the time calls for it.

Then other times I like a bit of flavor. Still though, not wanting to lose the taste of Stoli, one of my favorite recipes for this vodka would have to be the Desiree. Which consists of….

1 oz. Stoli
5 oz. Creme de Cassis

So straightforward you can make it at home without going out and buying 50 different ingredients, and you can even instruct your casual bartender on how to make it without coming across as a “snob” or “pretentious,” as some people ever so affectionately like to call it.

I hope everyone has an awesome weekend. 😉

As always…

Stay awesome.

For The Weekenders: Three Liquors You Should Know About…

Every once in a while, it’s nice to share some of your favorite things with other people. In particularly, people whom you enjoy having a small gathering with.

Often the trend nowadays is for everyone to bring their own alcohol, and share it around – but if you’re looking to share something more than just beer or wine, considering that’s what most usually bring, here’s three kinds of alcohol that will be sure to make a great night for everyone. Enjoy.

For The Weekenders Three Liquors You Should Know About, Rego's Life For The Weekenders, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders, Rego's Life For The Weekenders Three Liquors You Should Know About, Regos Life, regoslife, american honey, new amsterdam gin, jaegermeister, best liquors, the best liquor, best liquor brands, best selling liquor, best party liquor, best kind of liquor,

Let’s start off with my favorite….Jagermeister. More of a digestif liqueur, this stuff is amazing. Good God…there’s so much you can do with it – so many drinks you can make. The most well known being Jagerbombs – Red Bull and Jager (formerly Jager and beer)…but there are many, many more mixes than that.

I really enjoy the taste of this stuff, not to mention the fact it’s made of 56 herbs and spices. Usually when I drink I try and drink clean, and am very particular about the type of alcohol I take into my system. Hence why if for example, if anyone were to hang out with me, it’s more than likely you wouldn’t see me mixing alcohols.

So besides the ever-so-famous Jagerbomb what are two more drinks that are worthy of mentioning? Read on…

For The Weekenders Three Liquors You Should Know About, Rego's Life For The Weekenders, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders, Rego's Life For The Weekenders Three Liquors You Should Know About, Regos Life, regoslife, american honey, new amsterdam gin, jaegermeister, best liquors, the best liquor, best liquor brands, best selling liquor, best party liquor, best kind of liquor

The Bob Dylan. – Fairly simple, with a decent proof. You’re gonna need a blender for this one – it was originally made with Surge…but that was discontinued. Then I used to make it with Vault…and that was discontinued. Now, I used Mountain Dew. Take 12 oz. Mountain Dew, 4 oz. Jagermeister, and 16 oz. ice. Put all this in a blender, throw the top on, and blend until smooth. Careful though – this is soda you’re blending, after all.

Serve it in a highball glass and what do you get? One chilling, refreshing drink with a nice aftertaste. The ice M.D. taste hit you first, with a nice finish of jager once it warms up as it goes down. Try it out, and if you have already, comment below.

Reservoir Dog. Named after one of my favorite movies, this one’s quick and simple to make, as all it takes is one part Bailey’s Irish cream and one part Jager. Mix both over ice cubes, strain, and before you know it you’ve got one excellent drink that didn’t takes years of mixology to perfect.

Jager, depending on your alcohol tolerance, is one of those alcohols that give you a nice buzz without the terrible hangover. Quite honestly, what causes a terrible hangover is one of two things:

A) Cheaply made alcohol
B) Not enough oxygen to the brain – not drinking enough water after you’ve had your fill of alcohol

Next up…New Amsterdam Gin. Usually, I’m a bit of a gin snob. I like Beefeater London Dry Gin all the way – but sometimes, just sometimes, I like to change things up. New Amsterdam Gin is (suprisingly) something that caught my attention one day while I was out with a few friends getting some spirits for a small pool party.

It’s a bit lacking in Juniper, but it does quite well in fruity drinks, due to its citrusy flavor. It’s also one of the better gins if you’re looking to pay less than $20.

Personally, when it comes to gin I have one favorite drink. It’s very simple, and sometimes boring – but with my fitness regime and again, conscientious nature, it’s something I don’t mind. Sometimes, the best things are the simplest – one of which is your classic G&T, or Gin and Tonic.

If you’re looking for more flavor though, these two should do the trick:

Classic Clover Club. – Another classic, but with a twist. Created in the 1800’s, this is one of those classics that everyone should try at least once.

All it takes is 2 oz. gin, half a lemon’s worth of juice, 1 egg white, 1 tsp. sugar, and lastly 1/4 raspberry syrup. Pour everything in to a cocktail shaker with ice, and shake like your life depends on it. This is so the sugar and egg mix well, and properly. Strain it into a cocktail glass and you’re good to go. Many people replace the raspberry syrup with grenadine but to be quite honest, without the syrup the drink is nothing to brag about. Raspberry syrup is key.

If you like mint, Caruso is for you. This one is both old-fashioned and cocktail glass worthy, and is simple enough for even the novice bartender to make.

The ingredients? 1 oz. gin, 1 oz. dry vermouth, and a touch of green creme de menthe. Pour them into a mixing glass with ice, stir, and stir well, strain into a glass and presto – you’ve just found a drink for the upcoming St. Patty’s day.

…but maybe you’re not a gin fan. Some people hate it. Maybe you don’t even like Jager – some say it smells like medicine….but everybody loves honey, right?

Cue Wild Turkey American Honey. What can I say about this stuff…except for the fact it’s effing awesome. You can drink it straight, on the rocks, or mixed. It’s got a sweet start and robust finish. The honey is so thick, it coats the glass quite easily even if you’ve accidentally let the ice melt. Interesting fact: Whiskey back in the day used to actually be considered medicinal, and was the preferred drink over water due to a safety point of view – considering the filtration process a few hundred years ago wasn’t exactly…effective.

Sometimes I like to make Masala Chai (mixed spice tea) and spike it with an ounce or two of American Honey, makes for a real nice nightcap.

But if you prefer your drinks cold and not warm, here’s two recipes that’ll knock your socks off:

Let’s start simple, with American Honey and Ginger Beer. – Just as the name says all you really need is a large tumbler glass, limes, ginger beer, and about 30 ml of American Honey.

Pour the A.H. in the tumbler glass, slice the limes up into wedges, squeeze four over ice in that same tumbler glass, and top up with ginger beer. Keep in mind I said ginger BEER, not ginger ale – big difference. You can usually find the ginger beer in the “ethnic” aisle of your local grocer. No Canada Dry here folks.

Nothing like a little Lo-Fi THC. – If you’re looking for something a little more rewarding to make – as in, complex, then you’ll really enjoy Lo-Fi THC. I love making this whenever friends are over. I don’t care what anyone says, the way in which you mix a drink determines the flavor, so follow these instructions closely…

First, you’ll need the following:

30ml Wild Turkey Bourbon
30ml American Honey
30ml Campari
Dissolved sugar cubes
Dash of whiskey bitters
An orange rind twist for garnish

Throw all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker GLASS. Stir 3 times clockwise, then ONE time anti-clockwise. Place your ice in a tumbler glass and start pouring the ingredients through a strainer over the aforementioned ice. Top it off with the orange rind in the glass and voila – you just became 50x more impressive to that date you invited over.

You’re welcome…and I hope everyone has an awesome weekend. 😉

As always…

Stay awesome.
