For The Weekenders: Comfort Food Prescriptions, Glass House Dining, Whiskey Delivery

Yeah…I know, this one’s late. But hey, look at the bright side – it’s not too late. I mean…you’re not going to be scrambling around on Friday, that’s for sure. Plus, this one’s worth the wait. I’ve got three great spots for you to check out, each and every one tailored to fit whatever mood you’re in. As long as it’s not depressed…depressed dining is a no go…but these spots will put a smile on your face.

Ready? Let’s go.

Transparency seems to be the new age trend, and while I generally like to keep a private life, the place I’m about to tell you about is worth being a little out in the open. Though secret, unknown, tucked away, and even underground lounges are far more thrilling to discover, 1826 Restaurant & Lounge is just one of those places that turn public party naysayers on the path of reconsideration.

Why? For the sheer fact it’s an architectural beauty. The place is comprised entirely of glass, meaning anyone outside can look in – but honestly, from the outside, it’s a pretty nice view to soak in. From the inside, make it to the top floor and you feel like you’re the observer to the outside world, instead of the observed.

1826 has it all. Insanely great music, clean lines, elegant bar, and a mixed menu of cocktails and food that’s bound to get anyone who’s full hungry, and anyone that’s “not drinking this weekend” having a “sip or two.” Welcoming walk-ins and taking reservations, this is a great go-to spot for when you want to impress that high maintenance date or a few friends who are looking for a place that’s swank and modern. The key here is quality, plain and simple.

So here’s the deal – book a reservation for about 9:30 or so, you know, to give yourself enough time to hit the gym, freshen up, and put on your finest (no tennis shoes and t-shirts here, please). Ring up your friends or that date and say you’ll either meet them at 1826 or be picking them up. The former always works out better. If you’re really feeling adventurous, rent a luxury car from Lou La Vie for the evening…if you don’t already have one.

Step inside and get ready for some fun. It’s always good to start out with drinks. Order a cocktail or simple drink while browsing the menu – they have options for vegetarians and steak lovers alike, and a unique way of making it known. Enjoy every bite of your meal (the tastes are explosive) then head upstairs to the lounge area to schmooze and booze the night away. This is Miami, after all.

But hang on – let’s say you don’t want a “fancy” night out (pfft, please). Let’s say you’ve been through a break up (*cough*postValentinesDaycliche*cough*) and instead just want to be forgotten by the world with a few bros or ace girls. You want that nice dinner to make you feel powerful and independent, but are perfectly comfortable in your “slumming it” attire.

Or, maybe you genuinely just fancy a night in with the lads/girls. Your pick.

What do you do? Where do you go?

In the Sack, of course….that being the name of the place – not your actual bed. No. No sexy parties. Not now.

For The Weekenders Comfort Food Prescriptions Glass House Dining Whiskey Delivery, For The Weekenders Rego's Life, Rego's Life, In The Sack Dallas, texas food

While In The Sack does encourage you to make love, not meals, they also allow you to either take out or order-in -WAIT FOR IT- gourmet food. As in, food that looks pretty…and tastes pretty damn good. Not to mention some fine wine and spirits (beer, too).

Ergo if you’re busy with your new found habit of smoking and knocking back bourbon like it’s water or crying into a pint of ice cream and watching Sleepless in Seattle, don’t worry – these guys have you covered. Meaning no dumb decisions on whether or not you’re sober enough to drive, and no concerns of your messy hair and smeared makeup.

So go ahead, order up that grilled flank steak with a side of roasted asparagus, and Guinness chocolate chip bread pudding for dessert. Just don’t forget the whiskey, and some Irish Cream to continue satisfying that sweet tooth of yours.

Save the best for last. This next one puts a unique spin on nightlife and stay at home dining, all while carrying it out flawlessly and with perfection.

Situation: You wanna suit up, dress nice. You want nice drinks, with friends. You also want to stuff your face with comfort foods.

Solution? Now’s the time to head to Vegas and see a different doctor to get your comfort food prescription over at Rx Boiler Room. Remember that neat little underground spot I told you about a few weeks back? Well, same concept, except don’t let that stop you from reading – these guys have their own nice little spin on things.

For The Weekenders Comfort Food Prescriptions Glass House Dining Whiskey Delivery, For The Weekenders Rego's Life, Rego's Life, Rx Boiler Room, weekend activities, las vegas nightlife

Like this awesome floor piece, for starters.

It’s recommended to make a reservation, although there are a plethora of seats – you still want the best ones. Besides, it’s Vegas, baby. You deserve the best and nothing less. Aesthetics wise this place has a steampunk feel to it, something that somehow, never gets old and always seems to fascinate.

So where were we? Oh right, comfort foods. Get them here, along with epic cocktails made by mixologists who really know their shit.

For The Weekenders Comfort Food Prescriptions Glass House Dining Whiskey Delivery, For The Weekenders Rego's Life, Rego's Life, Rx Boiler Room, weekend activities, las vegas nightlife

Workin’ hard or hardly workin’, eh Mac?

Both their food and drink menus have been ever so affectionately renamed as well – Nourishment Charts and Libation Charts, in respective order, full of tasty and original delights from these awesome chefs. My recommendation? Get together a bunch of friends or a date who likes to eat, because you’re going to want to try everything.

Start with BBQ beef spring rolls or an Inside Out French Onion Grilled Cheese, then move on to a spin of a certain fast food chain’s famous bucket experience, with crispy fried Game Hen, or some Peking Duck Lettuce Wraps. From there, take your pick from some choice sweets with Croughnuts or a bit of Pie Americana. Throw in some fun-to-say drinks like Pizzazerac and Time Traveler’s Tea, and you’ve got yourself a night out, with the palette comforts of a night in.

For The Weekenders: The Casual Travel Bar 101…

Alright so finally following up from “For The Weekenders: The Classic Travel Bar 101,” here’s another list of some pretty epic (and discreet) travel bar essentials I like to have handy when I’m looking for a more casual feel. These are great for when you’re at the beach, on a plane, backpacking, or road trips across [insert preferred country here]. Discreet and compact enough to be carried anywhere with you, and unique enough to be the perfect conversation starter, these are must haves for anyone who has a love for all things awesome. Enjoy.

rego's life, travel bar, casual travel bar, for the weekenders the casual travel bar 101, reef fanning sandal, credit card bottle opener, private reserve flask, private reserve 3 oz flask

1. Let’s start things off simple. Let’s mix a little bit of casual with classic.

So let’s say you’re out and about at some place in the states. As is the rule of thumb for many places that serve alcohol in America, taking your alcohol outside (even if it’s on the side exit of the building) is strictly prohibited. Public drinking in general really, is pretty taboo out there, while in other countries the laws are a little more loose.

Or let’s just say the cops know how to turn a blind eye. Your choice.

So what do you do when you feel like a quick swig? You pack a flask, naturally.

But let’s be honest – the average size flask isn’t very discreet, and unless you plan on getting sloshed during your transition from one bar, lounge, or club to the next, it doesn’t really make sense to carry out that much liquor anyway. Regular sized flask can be bulky. Obvious. And when you think about it, they were originally intended for inner coat pockets – back when drinking in public was a little more…acceptable.

So here’s something a touch more discreet.

Izola Private Reserve 3oz Flask, rego's life, travel bar, casual travel bar, for the weekenders the casual travel bar 101,private reserve flask, 3oz flask

Yeah. You’re welcome. The Izola Private Reserve 3oz Flask is the epitome of discreet. Izola’s flasks in general come in 3 or 5 oz. sizes, but what I like about this one is its aesthetic appeal. “Private Reserve” is just one of the engravings offered on this little 3 oz. flask, so each one can be a unique conversation starter.

Izola Private Reserve 3oz Flask, rego's life, travel bar, casual travel bar, for the weekenders the casual travel bar 101,private reserve flask, 3oz flask

It fits in your pocket perfectly without any bulge and if you’re ever throwing back your head in public for a swig nobody will really notice what the hell you’re doing as it fits easily in the palm of your hand. *Shrugs* if anything, people may think you’re taking meds. Take meds and no one bats an eye. Drink in public and (sometimes) all hell may just break loose.

2. Sandals – More Awesome Than You Think. Seriously. Years back I used to be sandals averse…until I saw the light. What is this light I speak of, you ask? Well. First there was the sandal that was drinking ninja level 99 – the Reef Dram. That was tragically discontinued…and from there I pledged that I wouldn’t put on another open toe piece of footwear until I found another sandal that met my thirsty needs.

Then shortly after I found the Reef Fanning and a new era was born. An era where I proudly strutted around public in sandals, outside of my “slumming it” days. Yes, it was a time where polos, walker shorts, and sandals were very much the order of the day.

rego's life, travel bar, casual travel bar, for the weekenders the casual travel bar 101, reef fanning sandal,

Why? Because when you need a bottle opener at a party, you NEED a bottle opener. Sure, you can use the old “hang on watch this” trick and risk either chipping your tooth every time or chiseling a piece of someone’s kitchen counter top off, and maybe even using that disposable lighter as a bottle opener is a nice party trick. Key chain bottle openers work too.

But let’s say you don’t wanna chip your tooth. Or someone’s kitchen counter. Or maybe you prefer refillable lighters instead of disposable. Or maybe you don’t feel like something so bulky on your key ring. What do you do then? Let’s put it in a different scenario…

rego's life, travel bar, casual travel bar, for the weekenders the casual travel bar 101, reef fanning sandal,

Someone to your liking just so happens to grab a beer or cider from a nearby cooler but oh no – no bottle opener. Your next move? Ever so casually grab that girl’s/guy’s bottle (they’re made for both men and women – the sandal, that is) from them without uttering a word. Pop off the cap in silence. Then turn around and begin to walk off casually. In 3…2…1, prepare to hear a “hey! Wait! That’s so cool – how’d you do that?”

Turn around slowly and smile, while you shuffle back casually saying, “Well…”

Congratulations. You’ve just learned a new party trick.

3. Save The Best For Last. What’s bulky, holds all your money, and something that goes everywhere with you?

Hopefully not your wife.

i see what you did there spiderman, rego's life

Hopefully not your husband either. (Because ladies, if your guy has man boobs. He is not a man. Get him a bra. Or a gym membership. Guys – start looking like Daniel Craig. Like, NOW).

But I’m not here to talk about marital issues. Nope. Hopefully most of you answered “wallet” to that question. If you’re wondering how on earth wallets correlate with discreet travel bar essentials (besides buying them, of course), honestly – they have everything to do with them. This one’s purely for the most organized, forward thinking, and discreet among us.

rego's life, travel bar, casual travel bar, for the weekenders the casual travel bar 101,credit card size bottle opener, credit card bottle opener

The Credit Card Size Bottle Opener is the PERFECT gift for avid party goers and globe trekkers. Because you need something to open your beer when it’s -4 celsius. Not all weather is fair for sandals. I love this bottle opener because it’s very easy for me to travel with. If there’s one thing you learn after traveling enough it’s the key ring rule – only take whatever keys are vital to you on a trip (House. Car. Gun cabinet. You know, the usual.).

You don’t want to be somewhere in Europe/Asia tagging all your keys with you everywhere – and getting them out to open a bottle is pretty dumb – that’s like getting out your passport to use it as a coaster. Nope, you want something simple, easy to carry, and if anything so thin it slides into your pocket with you not even realizing it’s there. At only 1.5 mm thick making it easy to fit in your wallet (or by itself), and pure stainless steel, this is one accessory I think everyone should have.

Jack Threads has one that’s even cooler than the one above, but hurry, because the sale ends soon.

Sometimes, it’s the little things in life that count. 😉

As always…

Stay awesome.

For The Weekenders: Valentine’s Day Ideas – Rego Style.

Valentine’s Day: A day that represents love, love of money, flighty holiday flings, and commercialism. Basically just a whole lot of definitions. Usually, there’s about 3 kinds of people up and about on this day – the lovers, the players, and the anti-valentiners (yes, I just invented a word.). Figured I’d put a spin on this For The Weekenders, and share with all three of those categories some excellent Valentine’s Day ideas – whether you love it, loathe it, or just plain don’t care about it. Enjoy. 😉

Valentine’s Day Ideas. Rego Style.

For The Anti-Valentiner. I remember one of my anti-Valentine years. It was the year Chinese New Year fell on the same date (take a guess). A handful of my friends and I were single that year, and we decided to rock it unconventional. Before Valentine’s Night began (and things got…crazy) I hit the town during the day with a friend of mine, and we decided to go for Chinese buffet – in celebration of Chinese New Year, and a big fuck you to Valentine’s Day.

It went alright.

Besides the stares.

In retrospect, I now understand why there were so many older dudes looking on with mouths agape…considering we were in a restaurant. Eating family style. Sharing food. An interesting day indeed.

To avoid any friendly outings turning into *ahem* “misunderstandings,” I recommend bringing two or three friends to this next place I’m going to suggest. Which is also a place that both houses and serves my second two favorite things – donuts and alcohol. Everyone loves donuts. My first? Gummie bears and alcohol. Side note – is it gummy bears, or gummie bears? I’ve lost track over the years… Anyway, cue Glazed Donut Bistro. Donuts for Grown-ups – which is conveniently their slogan.

What can I say about this place – it’s awesome.

Their menu? One of a kind.

Their donuts? Artisan quality – no, scratch that – Artisan. If you’re on the road to fitness cover your eyes – food porn alert in 3..2…

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Yeah. Three I recommend? Bourbon Pecan Pie, Tres Tres Leches, and S’more Please.

As for their alcohol options…heaven sent. So this is my suggestion:

For starters, order up the 24 donut hole special with 6 sauces – y’know. to get the palette ready. Wash that down with a bit of Almond Iced Coffee or Craft Hot Chocolate. Savor this while waiting for the main course…

Fried Chicken Beignets; lightly sweetened boneless (win) chicken with a maple dip. Salty and savory in one explosive flavor. Proceed to then cleanse that from the palette with your choice of red or white wine – or if you’re really feeling fancy, some Dom Perignon, then bask in that bliss for about 5-10 minutes.

valentine's day ideas, valentine days, valentines ideas, valentine day ideas, great valentines day ideas, fun valentines day ideas, Valentines Day, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders, For The Weekenders Valentine's Day Ideas - Rego Style, Glazed Donut Bistro, Glazed Donut Bistro LA

It’s not over yet.

Proceed to dessert – because now’s the time to ready that half full stomach of yours with various donuts of your choice – shoot for the Cherry Amaretto and a dessert wine, if it suits your fancy. After all – it’s anti-Valentine’s Day – you have a right to be anti-something-healthy. Ask for the check with pride and strut out not entirely sober and readying yourself for the dentist next week.

For The Lovers. For those of you who aren’t anti-Valentine’s Day this year, you’re probably going to want to pull away from the norm of things. You know – chocolates. Typical dinner at that favorite place your S.O. always likes. Heart shaped balloons or dust collecting animals. *shrugs* Meh. Typical. Could be better. Could be worse.

Let’s shoot for better though. Here’s a way to look adventurous without suggesting sky diving and champagne. Unless you’re into that. In which case by all means – go for it. If not, how about making this Valentine’s Day….intimate.

The place? The Place.

valentine's day ideas, valentine days, valentines ideas, valentine day ideas, great valentines day ideas, fun valentines day ideas, Valentines Day, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders, For The Weekenders Valentine's Day Ideas - Rego Style, The Place NYC

No that…that’s the name of the restaurant. The Place. Christ. Keep up.

All jokes aside though – unless you purely suck at the art of seduction, you seriously can’t go wrong here. It’s a great spot to go when things are getting serious, when things already are serious, and when you want to try your hand at things getting serious.

Unlike most sterile looking “hot spot romantic restaurants” it has an aesthetic appeal that pulls you in, during any time of the day – but especially at night – and is sure to make both you and your S.O. feel like you’re in a world all your own.

Plus they’ve got great wine. *nods* if all else fails, wine prevails. The food menu is diverse enough where you can choose to eat light, or if you and your S.O. have been in it for the long haul these past [insert any number greater than 2] years you can both stuff your faces.

Although to be fair…I’ve always been pro-stuffed face. Either with food or alcohol

The best part? It’s all organic. Meaning a truly different and non-run-of-the-mill dining experience. I recommend making a reservation now, in case you’re still running around trying to figure something out last minute.

Life lesson: Never leave things last minute when it comes to things in relationships. Apparently a Hershey’s Bar and Valentine’s Day meme is not considered funny. Plus….no one wants to be this person:

For The Players. It’s a New Year. Meaning it’s time for a new kind of fun. Living the single life has many glorious, un-punishable benefits – like, I don’t know, not having to “remember” to tell your S.O. that you’re having a night out on the town with friends.

You answer to no one. You needn’t worry about pleasing anyone. You do whatever you want, when you want, how you want.

It’s basically awesome. Plus – it has the obvious financial benefits.

Though this Valentine’s Day, if you really wanna treat yourself to something special, you may not be saving all that much money…but the experience ahead? Well worth it.

I won’t lie – I like awesome experiences. And traveling. And more awesome experiences. And great, tucked away, hidden spots that no one else knows about. And awesome experiences. And crazy unique parties.

But mostly awesome experiences. On which note I’d like to say Miami never ceases to deliver. The place? E11even Miami. A place where you can safely order drinks that are on fire, without being ridiculed (Cocktail Factory memories.). It also reminds me of Ageha.

If Dionysis (Greek God) started a Nightclub, he would’ve named it this.

What makes E11even Miami so special? Oh you know, nothing to big, except it’s open 24/7. Literally. As in, it never closes.

What is E11even Miami? Well…

Let the video speak for itself. During the day it’s a day club – bars, cool mechanical roofs, unique food, a very loungesque (yes, I invented another word) feel to it. You can eat. Drink. Zone out with the big TVs. Be merry.

During the evening? Wear your high roller outfit – you’re about to step into another world. Think DJs and center stage what looks to be hydraulic platforms, cabaret girls and contortionists twirling around on something similar to your last penthouse’s drapes. You can drink. Zone out with good music. Be on Mary (see what I did there? Yeah.)

The place is massive – 25,000 square feet massive. They don’t just serve you drinks, but put on a show while they’re at it. This is a place you want to go to really enjoy.

Is there beauty? Yes.

Is there a certain vibe of exoticism? Yes.

Is there near borderline nudity? Find out for yourself.

I recommend bringing a few friends along – unless you really want to fly solo…but really, this place is so massive your group can split, fly solo, then meet up again if you get bored. Which I highly doubt you will but still – it pays to have figurative insurance policy.

The main thing here is this is one experience you don’t want to pass up, if you’re currently rocking the single life. I’m all about aesthetics…and why shouldn’t I be? There’s so much beauty and sexiness in this world it deserves to be admired. Come to E11even Miami and you’ll get just that.

Sometimes it’s nice to slow down and really enjoy the moment.

For The Weekenders: The Classic Travel Bar 101…

Writing last week’s post on some great spots to visit got me thinking…in the past I’ve shared other great tips and ideas such as travel essentials…but there’s one essential I forgot to mention.

Picture this:

You’re leaving the airport and grab a cab/take the metro/hire a car to reach your place of stay. Could be a hotel, home stay, or perhaps a small flat you’re renting out for the next few weeks. You get everything unpacked, then decide to take a walk around town, maybe wind down with some of the local spirits. You pick up a small bottle of local spirits you’ve never tried before and grab some mixers to go with it. Everything’s all fine and good, until you get back to your place. Then it hits you –

…you have no real way to create a proper drink. Depending on what kind of accommodation you picked, you may not even have the proper glassware to make yourself a decent drink. Not to mention, the place you traveled to may not exactly have ice you can trust to chill said drink.

What now?

travel bar, travel bar set, traveling bar, travel bar, portable bar, portable bars, mobile bar, portable bar set, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders The Classic Travel Bar 101, lifestyle enhancements,

….cue this For The Weekenders post. I’m going to share with you the travel bar essentials I take with me on every trip. They’re useful for if you want to feel like bringing a small part of your home bar with you – and they take up just about as much space as a pair of trousers does in your carry on. I’ll start with the “classic” items for this For The Weekenders, and in a follow-up posts share with you more “casual” travel bar essentials that are great for the beach or when you’re backpacking. Check out the photos below each item – they’re actual shots of my personal collection. Pretty soon I’ll be adding this entire kit as a regular item to the shop for sale. Look out for it…and enjoy.

1. The Travel Bar Set by Mundi Westport Group. – There’s travel bar sets, then there’s travel bar sets. While there are many sets out there that feature much more storage space, the key here is you want to keep things compact. Discreet. Simple. The Travel Bar Set by Mundi Westport Group helps you accomplish just that. It’s perfect for two (or one), and comes with a slender zippered carrying case, 3 storage pockets for your choice of travel size spirits, waiter’s corkscrew, 2 compact (collapsible) tumblers, one stirrer, and a pair of ice/olive tongs.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I like it because it’s discreet enough to pass through customs and none of the objects can be deemed “sharp” for when I’m traveling through more Western countries. The tumblers are great, they expand and retract with ease and are easy to clean, just be sure to dry them off, and you’ve gotta give a gentle but firm “tug and twist” when expanding them – once you do though your drink is good to go with no risk of spillage. The key is to not throw it around like melamine dishware – the same way you wouldn’t throw around your better lowball glasses.

2. What Good is a Travel Bar Set Without a Cocktail Shaker? – Is what one of my friends asked me a while back when I bought this. Getting a proper cocktail shaker is an easy fix – I’ve had a single serve one from Oggi for about 6 years now, meaning it is old as fuck and a little bruised and battered…but it still hasn’t let me down. 18/8 stainless steel with a kind of soft rubber grip exterior and a rubber seal on the inside of the top, it’s excellent for when you need that drink shaken, not stirred. The one in the link above doesn’t have the soft grip exterior, but if you can find it, I highly recommend it.

travel bar, travel bar set, traveling bar, travel bar, portable bar, portable bars, mobile bar, portable bar set, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders The Classic Travel Bar 101, lifestyle enhancements, Oggi 18-8 Stainless Steel Mini Cocktail Shaker Rego's Life (4)

This thing has ZERO spillage, and in fact it seals so well it occasionally becomes a task getting both the top and strainer off…but if you’re looking to get an ICE COLD shaken drink without freezing your fingers off, try finding the one with the soft grip exterior.

3. Even With All That, You Can’t Forget the Ice. – Lastly, the solution to all your ice problems. You’ve got two choices here – stainless steel or soapstone? That’s right, I’m talking about whiskey rocks. When it comes to keeping your drinks cool, it really boils down to (pun intended) just how cold you want them. If you’re like me and prefer to actually taste your drink, go with soapstone whiskey cubes. If you like your drinks a bit cooler, go with stainless steel whiskey cubes.

Travel Bar Set - Mundi Westport Group - Rego's Life (2), Whiskey Rocks Soapstone - Rego's Life, travel bar, travel bar set, traveling bar, travel bar, portable bar, portable bars, mobile bar, portable bar set, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders The Classic Travel Bar 101, lifestyle enhancements,

Wait…whiskey what? Yeah, some people aren’t familiar with these bad boys…now’s the time to get acquainted. The process is simple – wash off your new set THOROUGHLY, taking care not to use any harsh soap (so it doesn’t get absorbed) and dry accordingly. Pop them in the freezer for a few hours (I keep mine in the freezer all the time), drop them into your glass (or retractable tumbler in this case, I recommend just 1 or 2 for the tumbler), and that’s it. Your drink can stay cool without the need of ice or the inconvenience of ice drowning it.

travel bar, travel bar set, traveling bar, travel bar, portable bar, portable bars, mobile bar, portable bar set, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders The Classic Travel Bar 101, lifestyle enhancements,Whiskey Rocks Soapstone - Rego's Life

Word of advice: If you’re going to use these rocks in the cocktail shaker, make sure you ONLY use the stainless steel type.

I’d hate to see a good drink wasted on account of chipped soapstone.

Plus I’d feel pretty bad for the soapstone in general.

As always…

Stay Awesome.

It’s getting to be that time of the year where…well, a fucking holiday is long overdue. I know – New Year’s was no more than a month ago *shrugs* what can I say? With plans for Europe already in place, just thought I’d share with you all some other great places to check out. Enjoy, and remember, life’s too short to sit around going nowhere.

Which brings me to the first order of business – Nepal. By motorbike.

Why?

Because it’s something you probably haven’t done yet – but would be more than willing to try.

Think about it – cruising down the road, no speed limit, wind in your hair and sunglasses deflecting bugs (okay, maybe helmet), open land, culture, and nature as far as the eye can see. Just you, the road, and a few buddies. Nothing’s more freeing than the sound of that motor hum.

The bike? Royal Enfield Bullet. 500cc’s of unadulterated power – not too much, not too little…but just right for a trip like this.

royal enfield bullet motorcycle, For the Weekenders,Rego's Life Blog,Travel Rego's Life, For The Weekenders Nepal by Motorbike Wine Tasting in Argentina Meditation in Portugal, Cabanas No Rio, vacation ideas, holiday ideas

Get ready for 11 days chock full of checking out Nepal’s awesome scenery including its many jungles, plains, and insane heights – and of course what would a holiday be without (naturally) getting to know the locals and some of their favorite things to do…not to mention, you know, like…stay with them. What? You thought it was gonna be all isolated hotels on this trip? Guess again.

The rundown:

Grab a friend (or three), and book your tickets, plus the reservation for the trip. Touch down in Kathmandu with nothing but a carry on and your most rugged pair of boots (you’ll need them). Hopefully you’ve researched into the culture a bit and brushed up on the language – a little cultural respect can go a long way. Rest up well and get ready for the next day – take this time to get familiar with the area and practice a few lines on the locals – there’ll be a welcome dinner later and knowing a joke or two may help break the ice. Be sure to try every food passed your way – let’s not be picky, remember, you’re here to explore.

From there it’s time to hit the road – there’s a lot on your travel plate:

No speed limits. Traffic-less streets in Bhaktapur.

Pigeon dinner and fresh mangoes (that you pick) for dessert while escaping the sun under a tree in Fattepur…speaking of, if you’ve been up trees picking mangoes, you probably stink – hit up the jungle for a fresh spring water shower.

Dessert before dinner – stuff your face with Momo dumplings in Bhetadar (they’re not your freezer variety) then eat dinner under the stars.

Learning how to make tea in Ilam…

…and 8 hour endurance rides.

You get the idea.

Like I said. Lot on your plate. Get ready. Rest well. Eat plenty. Nepal – it’s calling you – answer it.

Hopefully, all that motorbike action got you tuckered out…at this point, I personally would just wanna kick back and lounge all day. Argentina‘s the place to do it – but what trip to any Latin country would be complete without wine? Seriously…that’s like an elephant without a trunk.

So if you’re ready to come down off that adrenaline high, then it’s time to head to Mendoza. For villas, vineyards, and vino…so you can veni, vidi, vici.

First order of business: your accommodation. 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom villa? If you still wanna catch up on some work with your remote business early in the morning…or just enjoy sleeping alone…or just like a lot of space – I recommend 2 bedroom.

For the Weekenders,Rego's Life Blog,Travel Rego's Life, For The Weekenders Nepal by Motorbike Wine Tasting in Argentina Meditation in Portugal, The East Nepal Experience, The Himalayan, vacation ideas, holiday ideas

Think of this as your own home away from home. Treat it like your own home away from home. With waterfront and 1500 acre vineyard views, soaking tubs, rooftop terraces, and more than 2500 sq. ft. of living space, a place like this commands respect.

Besides waking up like royalty, the guys over at The Vines Resort and Spa are pretty intuitive when it comes to dining, too. They specialize in serving seasonal only dishes to all their guests – meaning the freshest taste you can find…and who can forget Argentinian beef? There’s just some things no matter how much your exercise that are like kryptonite to Superman…a good steak is one of mine.

If you’re not much of a red meat enthusiast that’s okay – they also serve other delicious alternatives like grilled salmon, pork (for you pork lovers) and even grilled fruit…a personal favorite of mine.

Hang on – don’t get the wrong idea here, this place isn’t all about relaxation – they’ve got some pretty fun activities that require you to get up and go, too. So in case you want to use more than the muscles in your arm to reach for that 3rd glass of wine, they’ve got you covered with excursions, fishing, climbing walls, bocce ball courts, and, of course, plenty of wine making activities. You know…to work those delts and lats.

For the Weekenders,Rego's Life Blog,Travel Rego's Life, For The Weekenders Nepal by Motorbike Wine Tasting in Argentina Meditation in Portugal, The East Nepal Experience, The Himalayan, vacation ideas, holiday ideas

Just remember – if you ever get sore from all that “heavy lifting,” you can always hit up their spa.

…but hold up – what if you don’t want all that? What if you don’t wanna socialize, don’t want noise, don’t want tours or “roughing it” – what if you don’t want any of that but instead just wanna get away from it all? Well then I’d say it’s time to take you back to (one) of my homelands…

Get ready for quality espresso, port wine, and bacalhau…’cause it’s next stop, Portugal.

For the Weekenders,Rego's Life Blog,Travel Rego's Life, For The Weekenders Nepal by Motorbike Wine Tasting in Argentina Meditation in Portugal, Cabanas No Rio, vacation ideas, holiday ideas

I remember my childhood days in Bermuda and teenage days of visiting family in Porto and Lisbon…we used to go out to the beach house and sunbathe, relax, lose track of time and just enjoy the stillness of everything. In retrospect, it was probably the best form of meditation I’d ever encountered and between traveling to both countries probably explains my refusal to live more than 10 minutes from the closest beach.

There’s a certain calmness the ocean offers to those looking for solace or time to reflect, empty, and get lost in their own thoughts. Just thinking about it makes me want to head to the beach now…but I’ve gotta finish this post. In the meantime, I want you to check out Cabanas No Rio, a (literally) small little getaway in Comporta, Portugal.

For the Weekenders,Rego's Life Blog,Travel Rego's Life, For The Weekenders Nepal by Motorbike Wine Tasting in Argentina Meditation in Portugal, Cabanas No Rio, vacation ideas, holiday ideas

There are two huts. Little huts. Fisherman huts…but don’t be fooled by these little huts. In each of these huts, are you living quarters. The first one? Your bedroom and bathroom, complete with shower. The second one? Your kitchen and living room. Quaint living room. Cute kitchen – decent for simple meals but small enough to not get too crazy.

For the Weekenders,Rego's Life Blog,Travel Rego's Life, For The Weekenders Nepal by Motorbike Wine Tasting in Argentina Meditation in Portugal, Cabanas No Rio, vacation ideas, holiday ideas

Loads of relaxing activities for when you feel the urge to venture out of your little hut. Take your pick from bird watching, dolphin watching, landscape observation and more. Me? I’d take dolphin watching. Good opportunity for photography and putting that macro lens to use.

If you get hungry, there’s no need to hunt down your own food – your accommodation is far away but not too far away from humanity – so hit up a restaurant if you don’t feel like cooking what you got from the grocer a few days back. So go out, grab some grub, have a few drinks, click some photos, head back, sit back, relax.

For The Weekenders: The Geekend….

Sometimes, people do so much running around, it’s nice to just chill out in your own den. With friends. And snacks. Maybe some beer. And a video game. Or three.

This upcoming weekend I thought I’d share with you all some games from the vault – 3 video games to be precise that have you using more than just your thumbs. Come on, let’s make it a low key weekend, and enjoy…

Rego's Life, For The Weekenders The Geekend, lifestyle and entertainment, For The Weekenders, video games, dj hero, daft punk dj hero, Daft Punk, dj video games, music video games

There’s nothing like a good DJ at a party or a venue – a great time in any building is 30% people, 25% atmosphere, and 45% music. I’ve reiterated this in numerous For The Weekenders articles before.

DJing is a shit ton of fun. I did it a few years back and knew not to mention socialized with many of like mind. A few months ago I finally made the decision to give DJ Hero a spin. Pun intended.

All in all it’s a pretty cool game. Though not precisely what DJing is all about (what Guitar Hero related game is, really), the bottom line is it makes for an excellent time when you’re just having a chill time with good friends.

Set yourself up with two turntables (they’re so inexpensive now) and away you go – the instructions are simple, controls easy, and all it takes is an ear for music and good hand eye coordination, then you’re good to go.

It has a pretty cool feature where if you get tired you can just hold down a button and it’ll “spin itself” so to speak – still playing the track you were on to perfection while you’re at the mini bar reloading on American Honey and playing some shot roulette (long story). For those times when you wanna be the party goer and the DJ…DJ Hero’s there to help…

Rego's Life, For The Weekenders The Geekend, lifestyle and entertainment, For The Weekenders, video games, dj hero, daft punk dj hero, Daft Punk, dj video games, music video games

Alright it’s high time to get up off your bum and move around some. As far back as I can remember, I’ve always been a fan of extreme sports and video games. Snowboarding, Sandboarding, Surfing, Racing, the list goes on and on.

When Tony Hawk first came out with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, I was one excited kid, probably more excited than the day I got my first ever skateboard…and when he came up with the brilliant idea to take skateboarding games to a whole new level with Tony Hawk Ride, it was like I was that same little kid all over again.

I know, this game has been out for practically ages now – but it still deserves recognition.

Rego's Life, For The Weekenders The Geekend, lifestyle and entertainment, For The Weekenders, video games, tony hawk ride, ps3, skateboard simulation, skateboarding video games

A lot of people say this game is hard – I beg to differ. A lot of people say this game doesn’t work properly – again, I beg to differ. First off, the whole reason why noone can seem to ge the controller going, is simply because of the fact that whoever wrote up the user manual fucked up pretty bad in explaining things.

The “skateboard” (which kind of reminds me of the hover board on Back to The Future II) has a sleep function, and instead of taking the batteries in and out to get it going, you merely have to hold down the PS button on the side of it for a hell of a long time – about ten seconds – and you’re good to go.

In terms of getting your character to actually go, that’s simple too – as long as you’re playing like you’re actually skateboarding – standing there lifelessly isn’t going to help your character pop that kickflip anymore than if you were to sit there and not move your thumbs.

Rego's Life, For The Weekenders The Geekend, lifestyle and entertainment, For The Weekenders, video games, tony hawk ride, ps3, skateboard simulation, skateboarding video games

The game itself is great for a workout – the first time I played it, I was sweating exactly how I would if I were actually at the park skateboarding. Every trick you pull you have to make the movements as if you’re actually doing it – it’s a great core and lower back exercise, so it’s something good for

A) if weather isn’t letting you skateboard and –

B) if you feel like getting a workout but don’t want it to feel like…working out.

Tony Hawk Ride is also multi-player – so go ahead and have fun watching your friends try and “bust a move” too.

Rego's Life, For The Weekenders The Geekend, lifestyle and entertainment, For The Weekenders, video games, tony hawk ride, ps3, skateboard simulation, skateboarding video games

But let’s say you’re really, really not into those kind of simulation games and you want the real deal. That’s cool – I’m like that too sometimes. Fortunately, Rocksmith can help fulfill that gnawing desire for authenticity.

It also gives you a good excuse to go and pick up that REAL guitar you’ve been drooling over in the display window for the past two months.

rocksmith, rocksmith wallpaper, rocksmith ps3, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders The Geekend, lifestyle and entertainment, For The Weekenders, video games, guitar simulation video game

Yeah. No plastic guitars here. Billy Talent would be proud. What can I say, the game actually teaches you how to play guitar, instead of just following along to some random colored buttons and insane (not to mention non-existent) fret patterns.

Think of Rocksmith as an educational tool, more than a game. It has a really great A.I. function that creates an instruction course tailored for you and no one else. It tracks your movements, your progress, knows when you start getting a certain section of a song down-pact, then increases difficulty accordingly.

It’s like, if [insert your favorite guitarist’s name here] came to your house and said “hey, let’s play a few sets – go easy, be cool, and try and keep up.” It’s casual like that…cool.

rocksmith, rocksmith wallpaper, rocksmith ps3, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders The Geekend, lifestyle and entertainment, For The Weekenders, video games, guitar simulation video game

It lets you pick the songs you like, play them, play them, and play them until you master them. It feeds a passion in the most constructive, and awesome way I’ve seen any video game since Gran Turismo 3 and 4 do…

…and the best part? When you decide to get up and leave the room – your den, your living room, your bedroom – the knowledge comes with you, and you can play that same piece anywhere, anytime.

Do something fun for you this weekend.

As always…

Stay Awesome.

For The Weekenders: Get Your Beer Fix With Healthy Beer…

This For The Weekenders I thought I’d tone things down a bit, keep it low key. While I’m constantly showing you guys great places to go and get booze, sometimes not everyone wants to spend $10 + on a single glass/bottle of alcohol. Plus I also wanted to share with you some great and healthiest beer out there that I personally drink in order to keep calories decent while still tasting great and keep the good times rolling. Like I always say, you can drink or eat anything, as long as it’s in moderation and with a bit of careful research.

So here’s a few of the healthiest beer you can bring along to or supply at the next big house party you’ve been getting stoked for. Enjoy.

healthiest beers, calories in beer, beer calories, guinness calories, rego's life, for the weekenders get your beer fix with healthy beer, regoslife, healthy beer, guinness draught, sierra nevada pale ale, modelo especial, best beers

If You’re Looking for a Good Buzz, Go with Guinness Extra Stout. It packs a bit more of a punch than it’s sibling beer Guinness Black Lager (4.5%) – and also helps colds. Whenever I feel a bit of something with my immune system coming on, I take one bottle of extra stout and mix it in a blender with a single raw egg, yolk included. Blend that puppy until frothy and smooth then down the hatch.

healthiest beers, calories in beer, beer calories, guinness calories, rego's life, for the weekenders get your beer fix with healthy beer, regoslife, healthy beer, guinness extra stout, heineken, new castle, guinness black lager

The taste is robust and strong, some say it’s bitter but I don’t really think so. It’s one of those beers you can drink down without having had too much on your stomach and it’ll actually fill you up. Great in the winter but not really recommended for the summer, you can’t lose with this one and don’t have to worry about it getting you sick (not calling any names here but…the perp that does begins with a “K.”). To top it all off it comes in at 6% – so if you’re alcohol tolerance has far exceeded numbers 4% and under or you just don’t wanna feel like you’re drinking carbonated water, this one’s for you.

If you really are focused on “calories” though by all means check out Guinness Black Lager, it’s a great alternative and has a smoother taste. For an even lighter beer, but in my opinion even less taste, shoot for Guinness Draught.

healthiest beers, calories in beer, beer calories, guinness calories, rego's life, for the weekenders get your beer fix with healthy beer, regoslife, healthy beer, guinness extra stout, heineken, new castle, guinness black lager

If You Want Something Light and Refreshing, Go With Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. This stuff is awesome. There was a time in my life when I lived in the country, and in that place there was a pizza joint. Not just any pizza joint – an amazing joint. A mom and pop, carry-out only pizza place where the ingredients were all natural with a MASSIVE array of toppings. Some of which I’ve only been able to find since then on Pizza Rustica‘s menu.

They also sold beer, which was awesome for a pizza place, and made it interesting by letting you create your own pick & mix 6-pack. This is where I discovered Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and haven’t looked back since. Citrusy aroma, surprisingly bold flavor, incredible smoothness, and an unbelievable finish. One of the few pale ales I’d drink – which is saying something.

So-so on the calorie end, around 175 which is right up there with Guinness, but hey – if you want to drink beer to feel the buzz, better to have a beer that only requires a few bottles compared to 6 or 7 light beers. If not it kind of just defeats the term “in moderation.”

healthiest beers, calories in beer, beer calories, guinness calories, rego's life, for the weekenders get your beer fix with healthy beer, regoslife, healthy beer, guinness extra stout, sierra nevada, new castle, guinness black lager

Last Stop, Newcastle…As In, The Beer. If You’re Just Looking for Something Familiar, but Smooth. Newcastle Brown Ale is the way to go. Well known over in the UK but not really favored here, nevertheless this is still a favorite of mine whenever I’m looking for a sweet tasting brew. Easy on the calories and reasonably priced, even the carb count won me over when first trying this brown ale.

What I love about this beer is the aroma – a nice nutty and caramel with a hint of coffee smell. Light carbonation, and still strong enough to feel the buzz coming on. Goes great with light foods and your classic chicken wings if you’re into watching the game. An all around winner for whenever you’re out at the bar/pub or just having a few friends over.

healthiest beers, calories in beer, beer calories, guinness calories, rego's life, for the weekenders get your beer fix with healthy beer, regoslife, healthy beer, guinness extra stout, sierra nevada, new castle, guinness black lager

The best part about all three of these? Practically no hangover. You can really tell the quality of a beer when you have your fill of it the night prior and wake up the morning after – if your head feels like it’s got a mallet that’s been pounding it all night, it’s a sure bet the ingredients that the beer was made with were of cheaper quality.

Beer is a lot like life – it’s not about how you start – but how you finish. 😉

As always…

Stay awesome.

For The Weekenders: Korean Wings, Post Party Breakfast Clubs, Sunday Steaks & Whiskey

The weekend’s fast approaching and since I’ve been hitting the sauce less and less, it’s got me thinking more about food. Working out 5-6 days a week can make a person pretty hungry – and every once in a while, we all need a “cheat” meal. So this For The Weekenders I thought I’d change things up a bit and share some of my favorite cheat meals with you all. Enjoy.

for the weekenders, rego's life blog, regos life, lifestyle and entertainment, for the weekenders korean wings post, breakfast clubs, korean chicken wings, korean fried chicken, bonchon chicken, hunter & tails, the breakfast club stir it up, rego's life atlanta restaurants, dallas restaurants, chicago restaurants

In travelling, there’s one thing you learn….food is awesome….and abundant. After a while, the phrase “I don’t like [insert food/ingredient here]” becomes non-existent. Because you quickly realize that there are TONS of ways to make a meal. I’ll try almost any dish once.

One food in particular I fucking love is Korean. Tried it in a few parts of the world until I finally tried it in South Korea. Then I caved and got a cookbook (the only way I know how to cook..don’t judge). Word of advice – if you ever wind up in Seoul or Busan or anywhere in South Korea for that matter – definitely, definitely try their food. Don’t stick to Western places – you’re missing out on a lot.

Now that that’s out of the way, there is one place in particular I strongly suggest you check out for some decent “junk food.” Located both globally and in the states it’s one of those go to spots you’ve gotta try at least once. If you’re a fan of fried chicken (the most consumed item during the Superbowl among others), you’re in for a treat.

bonchon chicken, rego's life, dallas restaurants, for the weekenders, rego's life blog, regos life, lifestyle and entertainment, for the weekenders korean wings post party breakfast clubs sunday steaks, korean chicken wings, korean fried chicken,

Because BonChon chicken delivers when it comes to a classic favorite. What makes BonChon stand out from the rest? The founder made sure the fried chicken coming out of his kitchen had a unique and original flavor. So what do you do when you roll up to the counter and aren’t sure what to order? Allow me to assist:

bonchon chicken, rego's life, dallas restaurants, for the weekenders, rego's life blog, regos life, lifestyle and entertainment, for the weekenders korean wings post party breakfast clubs sunday steaks, korean chicken wings, korean fried chicken,1st Grab some friends. Then start with some Tteokboki – it’s pretty much rice and fish cakes that’ve been stir fried to perfection then slathered in a spicy korean sauce – and just a touch of mozzarella to top it all off. You’re not going to want to share this, so make sure you order enough. An order of Stella Artois is also a must.

2nd This is where it gets serious. Ironically, I’ve never been one for meat on the bone – but with BonChon I’m willing to make an exception. You’ve got three choices – wings, drumsticks, and strips. Go for the strips, or pick your own favorite. Then pick your size – as in, how much you want. It’s the weekend. You’re surrounded by hungry friends – friends you work out with, and probably eat just as much as you do. Grab the XL – you’ll thank me later. Then select a sauce – you can’t forget the sauce. Soy Garlic if you like it tangy, Hot if you’re a masochist. If you’re not in the mood for BonChon’s chicken (you crazy bastard), try out the Bulgogi. Pretty much a hot plate with ribeye beef marinated to perfection alongside some steaming veggies. You’re welcome.

3rd Don’t forget the sides and salads. I’m serious – don’t forget the salad – you need your micro-nutrients. Try out their seaweed salad and of course, not Korean dish would be complete without kimchee or daikon (pickled radish) – the latter comes complimentary anyway, though.

From there it’s just sitting back and savoring the explosion of flavors you’ve just encountered. Your taste buds will thank you and BonChon will officially be your new go-to spot for mouth watering wings.

bonchon chicken, rego's life, dallas restaurants, for the weekenders, rego's life blog, regos life, lifestyle and entertainment, for the weekenders korean wings post party breakfast clubs sunday steaks, korean chicken wings, korean fried chicken,

If you filled up on BonChon and then decided to hit the town to see what parties are going on, I can guarantee after drinks and hours of dancing you’re gonna work up an appetite again. If that’s not the case, the next place is still a great excuse to carry on conversation if you’ve met someone “interesting” and don’t want the night to end just yet.

Skip the fast food chains for late night breakfast – there’s no dignity or class in going there – instead become a part of The Breakfast Club at Stir It Up Midtown.

for the weekenders, rego's life blog, regos life, lifestyle and entertainment, for the weekenders korean wings post party breakfast clubs sunday steaks, the breakfast club stir it up, rego's life atlanta restaurants

Even if wings and waffles aren’t your thing or you already had your fill of chicken for the weekend, they’ve still got other great selections like Spiced Shrimp with Coconut Grits, Callaloo & Saltfish, and more. Plain and simple, The Breakfast Club over at Stir It Up is unique because it’s only server Saturday and Sunday mornings during the wee hours – 2 AM to 5 AM.

Personally, I like the spiced shrimp with coconut grits – it’s warm, it’s filling, it sticks to your ribs. If you and your friends or that certain someone still wanna ride the buzz but get some food to absorb the alcohol, make sure you get there before 3 AM while they’re still serving alcohol. If you just wanna prevent having to nurse a hangover the next morning, it’s fresh squeeze breakfast beverages between 3-5. To top it all off, breakfast isn’t the only thing they serve…

Stir it Up also has an excellent regular menu that’s a mix between home style dishes with restaurant appeal. It’s a midtown Caribbean place that knows all about what the stomach wants, even when you yourself aren’t sure. Even with late night eating, you shouldn’t settle for less. Georgia never seizes to amaze me.

for the weekenders, rego's life blog, regos life, lifestyle and entertainment, for the weekenders korean wings post party breakfast clubs sunday steaks, the breakfast club stir it up, rego's life atlanta restaurants

Now for the real cream of the crop. It’s Sunday. You’re all partied out, and going through that weekly “detox” phase. Water, vitamins, fruit smoothies (don’t judge), cardio, you know the drill…but at the same time, you’re getting the “itch” to finish off the whole thing with a bit of a bang. By yourself, with friends, or a date, it doesn’t matter. you just want something magnificent before you get back to eating clean the rest of the week, and goddammit you want steak.

Cue Hunter & Tails. Your one stop spot for steak and bourbon….and I’m not talking about your typical, what-the-fuck-is-in-this-thing steak either. I recommend Hunter & Tails because it’s the perfect cheat meal – for starters, they buy from farms that believe in real food – not hormone pumped or GMO infested steroid type foods.

for the weekenders, rego's life blog, regos life, lifestyle and entertainment, for the weekenders korean wings post party breakfast clubs sunday steaks, hunter & tails, rego's life chicago restaurants

So when you sit down and order their 21 Days Aged Grass Fed Steak, you can rest assured you’re getting steak – and not an unhealthy combo of chocolate bars and potato chips with a little bit of meat (seriously, the mass majority of beef is fed with that).

If you’re not a fan of red meat they’ve been clever enough to come up with a vegetarian alternative as well, but I do urge you to try the Bang Mussels as a starter at least. Might as well add a decent wine to the mix, too – Steltzner Claret should get the job done…but don’t leave without first trying their Old Fashioned – can’t go wrong there. Head home, wind down with some mellow music and toast to a weekend well played.

Life’s all about experiences – one of those experiences is food.

As always…

Stay awesome.

For The Weekenders: Saloons, Bull Riding, and Dirty Laundry…

First off…Happy New Year.

Secondly, I hope everyone had a great New Year’s Eve – I can certainly say I did. This For The Weekenders I thought I’d try something different from the usual pace…you know how it is – upscale lounge bars, jet set destinations, and the like…most of my readers know by now I’m not really into divey bars or anything. Though I have a small confession – a few places were able to capture my attention – call them the kind of hot spots that walk the line when it comes to aesthetic appeal and quality. So here’s the rundown on 3 places that are for that night when you just wanna go casual. Enjoy.

There’s a point in your natural adult life where going to the newest, most modern late night hot spots can get a bit, well, monotonous…you know, the same crowd, the same drinks, the same music. Sometimes it’s nice to have a change. Something where you know for a fact someone can’t really say “I was there last week too! Where were you?” Good news…Crane’s Downtown in Los Angeles serves up just that.

For The Weekenders Saloons Bull Riding and Dirty Laundry, Rego's Life, Rego, Regos Life, For The Weekenders, lifestyle and entertainment, lifestyle enhancements, PBR Rock Bar, Crane’s Downtown, dirty laundry los angeles, las vegas nightlife, los angeles nightlife, la nightlife

…with a vault entrance saloon. Yeah. We’re getting original.

What’s the best part about this place? You wouldn’t know it exists because it’s underground. In a safe. That was once part of an old bank (obviously). The owners who bought the place decided to get creative and lo and behold – Crane’s Downtown was born. Though they don’t have a website, which they seriously should in my opinion this place is too good not to have a huge web presence (call me, I’m here to help.), don’t let that stop you from checking them out.

Why? It’s a mix between dive bar, saloon, and an upscale joint. While the three descriptions being fused together sounds odd, it’s actually a better combination than one would expect. It’s cozy. It’s vintage. It’s unique. The price is right. It’s friendly. It’s everything you could ask for. What are you waiting for – get your arse down to Crane’s Downtown this weekend. You’ll love it (and thank me later.)

Since we’re on the topic of saloons and all, might as well bring to light another great place that mixes a nice modern but gritty feel together…but this time with extreme sports.

I won’t lie – I wasn’t always a city slicker…for a good part of my youth I lived in the country – I’m talking about country so far set in the woods the nearest, “proper” grocery store was 10 miles out and your closest neighbor farther than shouting distance. I learned about cars, wild life, and the joys of target practice….though somehow I could never get into country music. That’s another story though – the bottom line is, there’s one thing in particular that always fascinated me – bull riding. Fortunately, there is a place that can satisfy my secret shame, where no one’s to judge.

I call it “country pleasures for city dwellers.” – A title in progress, but *shrugs*…

It’s pretty straight forward – there’s a bar. There’s a grill. There’s fire pits. There’s bourbon. Then there’s a mechanical bull that’s just waiting to take down it’s next contender – equipped with an on board camera to capture the look on your face as it tries to throw you. Go ahead and send a thank you card to PBR Rock Bar. What does PBR stand for exactly? Professional Bull Riding. Yeah – these guys mean business.

Here’s what I recommend – make a reservation. You’ll need it with the crowd and all. You’ll also need some quality booze and food – the food’s for after the bull ride. Knock back a few glasses of bourbon on the rocks (try for American Honey), and make sure you’ve got proper riding attire – sturdy denim and proper boots are a must.

Hopefully you’ve trained for this so you can impress that date you brought along and possibly hustle a few of your city friends who never knew you had an interest (or skill) for such things…then get out there and grab your short moment of attention and fame. If you came out alright, my guess is that date of yours will have a cold one waiting for you…among other things.

Let’s…let’s just replace that with a Dos Equis though. There’s some things I just never could get used to.

Strut past your friends while you’re at it and collect that nice $300 or so pooled bet money and order yourself up a nice meal for the appetite you worked up while showing off your sheer awesomeness to the world – or at least most of Las Vegas…and hey, maybe if you’re daring enough after about 3 or 4 glasses of bourbon, you can even get into singing “Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy.”

Just maybe.

I’ll leave that one up to you though…

After all that I’d say you’ll pretty much work up a sweat.

Might as well not stop there and keep going – though your mother may have said never air your dirty laundry, I think you can make an exception – this is a different kind, the type that’s a whole lot more fun. Might as well finish off that weekend right with a little place back in L.A…

Following the rough and ready style weekend I think this is a great place to kick back and wind down…known for it’s early 20th century look and feel, it’s one of those places where you know you’re some place nice but don’t have to necessarily dress for the occasion – and really, what’s better than that?

This one changes the station on that radio you have there though – Dirty Laundry (that’s the name of the place, by the way) switches to rock and hip-hop for music while keeping things interesting with their various and peculiar but eye catching décor, you’ll feel like you’re in a film intended for the modern but brilliantly mixed up kind of crowd that gets you wanting to join in all the fun. Be prepared for hot people…you’ve gotta appreciate the plethora of hot people…and drinks. Gatsby himself would probably be seen slipping into a place like this once or twice in his day.

Dirty laundry never looked so clean.

As always…

Stay awesome.

For The Weekenders: 3 Ways to Celebrate New Year’s Eve and Bring in the New Year Right…

The New Year. A time for friends, family, and lovers. Depending on where you’re at in the world, any one of the three of those categories are placed on a higher importance scale than the others. Sometimes, if you’re close with all 3, it can be a real mission trying to figure out how to split up your New Year’s Eve…or other times, you may just not have a bloody clue where to start with any of them in general.

New Year’s Eve is a time of the year where you bring in a new mark of time; a different, refreshing world, full of new opportunities and the anticipation of starting with a clean slate. It’s something that when celebrated, you really want to celebrate right – unforgettable, as you would any other major holiday or even birthdays.

I really hope everyone had an excellent Christmas, and got a chance to see The Wolf of Wall Street. An insanely epic movie, if you haven’t already or maybe just haven’t heard of it I recommend checking out now. It’s the best acting of Leonardo DiCaprio I’ve seen since The Great Gatsby and Django.

Taking into consideration you’re probably lining up for New Year’s Eve, I thought I’d take the time out to write up this great list of activities to do – from low key to party hard, there’s bound to be something for you to get out there (or stay in) and do while making your New Year’s Eve one to remember. Enjoy.

The Playbook.

The Friends. – It’s about time you and a few of your friends started learning about The Parliament…as in, the Champagne Bar. I recommend checking out “The Sky Room.” A place for who they so affectionately call “Lords and Ladies,” Parliament is filled with 5 bars and over 30 tables, decked out with enormous 15 foot chandeliers, and 100″ projection screens. Carefully thought out attention to detail in seating, lighting, and heck, even wall detail, this place was designed for class and nothing less.

Push through the massive mahogany doors and you’ll quickly realize the aim for Parliament was for it to be a mix between Old English class and American sophistication. Though new and exclusive to Chicago, this is the perfect place to hit up on NYE. In saying that….haul ass and get your tickets now for their New Year’s Eve bash, if they haven’t sold out already.

The Lover. – Let’s say you want something a little more low key though…something more intimate more, one-on-one. 2013’s been a good year to you, and you find yourself going steady with someone…or *shrugs* you know, you met them last week. I’m not one to judge. New Year’s Eve is only a few days away and now you find yourself trying to either make a memorable experience, or a great first impression. What’s a place where you can play it safe and knock out both, no matter how heavy the commitment? Michael Mina 74.

Take your pick in cozying up to the bar while you and your date wait for drinks, or if you’re with your S.O. get more intimate by enjoying the view of the bar from luxurious leather banquettes. Averse to the “sterile” look many upscale restaurants offer, Michael Mina has a warm and inviting feel to it…and if you’ve learned anything, when your mission is to get close with someone – setting is key.

You can book a private room or make simple reservations. With an extensive dinner and late night menu, there’s no worry of that special one-on-one moment or sinfully deep conversation being interrupted – well, okay maybe the last part may be a pinch interrupted…when you both find it’s suddenly past midnight and hear the epic sounds of legendary DJs and suddenly feel the sense of even more intimacy as the lights slowly dim.

Order up the Tempura Maitake Mushrooms, American Wagyu Beef Skewers, a couple Rule #237’s (that’s a drink, by the way), throw in a pair of Michael’s Margaritas, and prepare to watch the night unfold into one of the best New Year’s Eves you’ve had in a while.

The Family. Time for some good clean fun. Fireworks are probably the one thing that still fascinates people since childhood. Whether they remind you of Disney World as a kid or maybe some other special occasion or holiday, they’re still a time tested way to represent and symbolize a big celebration.

If you so happen to be anywhere near the San Francisco area on New Year’s Eve, be sure to check out San Francisco’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks Show. The rundown? Being held at the Embarcadero Center, the show’s gonna be a waterfront gig, starting at precisely 11:59 p.m. – not a minute earlier, not a minute later. Prepare to watch in awe with family and loved ones as fireworks are launched from barges 1000 feet out in the bay, just south of the Ferry building near Pier 14, while snapping pictures/video galore as you stare on in amazement while the many colors light up the sky.

new years eve party ideas, new years eve ideas, new years eve party, new years party ideas, ideas for new years eve, romantic new years eve ideas, San Francisco New Year’s Eve Fireworks Show 2014

The hot spots for the best view are gonna be south of Sinbad’s Restaurant, right along Embarcadero and just between Mission and Folsom Street. The best part? These guys are actually taking the time out to make sure the fireworks are synced to music played through mega speakers throughout Pier 14 to almost the Bay Bridge. Stay close to Pier 14 though, and you’ll hear the music loud and clear.

How’s that for bringing in the new year right?

Have a Happy New Year, as Rego’s Life looks to turn new pages with you in 2014.

Stay awesome.
