For The Weekenders: Korean Wings, Post Party Breakfast Clubs, Sunday Steaks & Whiskey

The weekend’s fast approaching and since I’ve been hitting the sauce less and less, it’s got me thinking more about food. Working out 5-6 days a week can make a person pretty hungry – and every once in a while, we all need a “cheat” meal. So this For The Weekenders I thought I’d change things up a bit and share some of my favorite cheat meals with you all. Enjoy.

In travelling, there’s one thing you learn….food is awesome….and abundant. After a while, the phrase “I don’t like [insert food/ingredient here]” becomes non-existent. Because you quickly realize that there are TONS of ways to make a meal. I’ll try almost any dish once.

One food in particular I fucking love is Korean. Tried it in a few parts of the world until I finally tried it in South Korea. Then I caved and got a cookbook (the only way I know how to cook..don’t judge). Word of advice – if you ever wind up in Seoul or Busan or anywhere in South Korea for that matter – definitely, definitely try their food. Don’t stick to Western places – you’re missing out on a lot.

Now that that’s out of the way, there is one place in particular I strongly suggest you check out for some decent “junk food.” Located both globally and in the states it’s one of those go to spots you’ve gotta try at least once. If you’re a fan of fried chicken (the most consumed item during the Superbowl among others), you’re in for a treat.

Because BonChon chicken delivers when it comes to a classic favorite. What makes BonChon stand out from the rest? The founder made sure the fried chicken coming out of his kitchen had a unique and original flavor. So what do you do when you roll up to the counter and aren’t sure what to order? Allow me to assist:

1st Grab some friends. Then start with some Tteokboki – it’s pretty much rice and fish cakes that’ve been stir fried to perfection then slathered in a spicy korean sauce – and just a touch of mozzarella to top it all off. You’re not going to want to share this, so make sure you order enough. An order of Stella Artois is also a must.

2nd This is where it gets serious. Ironically, I’ve never been one for meat on the bone – but with BonChon I’m willing to make an exception. You’ve got three choices – wings, drumsticks, and strips. Go for the strips, or pick your own favorite. Then pick your size – as in, how much you want. It’s the weekend. You’re surrounded by hungry friends – friends you work out with, and probably eat just as much as you do. Grab the XL – you’ll thank me later. Then select a sauce – you can’t forget the sauce. Soy Garlic if you like it tangy, Hot if you’re a masochist. If you’re not in the mood for BonChon’s chicken (you crazy bastard), try out the Bulgogi. Pretty much a hot plate with ribeye beef marinated to perfection alongside some steaming veggies. You’re welcome.

3rd Don’t forget the sides and salads. I’m serious – don’t forget the salad – you need your micro-nutrients. Try out their seaweed salad and of course, not Korean dish would be complete without kimchee or daikon (pickled radish) – the latter comes complimentary anyway, though.

From there it’s just sitting back and savoring the explosion of flavors you’ve just encountered. Your taste buds will thank you and BonChon will officially be your new go-to spot for mouth watering wings.

If you filled up on BonChon and then decided to hit the town to see what parties are going on, I can guarantee after drinks and hours of dancing you’re gonna work up an appetite again. If that’s not the case, the next place is still a great excuse to carry on conversation if you’ve met someone “interesting” and don’t want the night to end just yet.

Skip the fast food chains for late night breakfast – there’s no dignity or class in going there – instead become a part of The Breakfast Club at Stir It Up Midtown.

Even if wings and waffles aren’t your thing or you already had your fill of chicken for the weekend, they’ve still got other great selections like Spiced Shrimp with Coconut Grits, Callaloo & Saltfish, and more. Plain and simple, The Breakfast Club over at Stir It Up is unique because it’s only server Saturday and Sunday mornings during the wee hours – 2 AM to 5 AM.

Personally, I like the spiced shrimp with coconut grits – it’s warm, it’s filling, it sticks to your ribs. If you and your friends or that certain someone still wanna ride the buzz but get some food to absorb the alcohol, make sure you get there before 3 AM while they’re still serving alcohol. If you just wanna prevent having to nurse a hangover the next morning, it’s fresh squeeze breakfast beverages between 3-5. To top it all off, breakfast isn’t the only thing they serve…

Stir it Up also has an excellent regular menu that’s a mix between home style dishes with restaurant appeal. It’s a midtown Caribbean place that knows all about what the stomach wants, even when you yourself aren’t sure. Even with late night eating, you shouldn’t settle for less. Georgia never seizes to amaze me.

Now for the real cream of the crop. It’s Sunday. You’re all partied out, and going through that weekly “detox” phase. Water, vitamins, fruit smoothies (don’t judge), cardio, you know the drill…but at the same time, you’re getting the “itch” to finish off the whole thing with a bit of a bang. By yourself, with friends, or a date, it doesn’t matter. you just want something magnificent before you get back to eating clean the rest of the week, and goddammit you want steak.

Cue Hunter & Tails. Your one stop spot for steak and bourbon….and I’m not talking about your typical, what-the-fuck-is-in-this-thing steak either. I recommend Hunter & Tails because it’s the perfect cheat meal – for starters, they buy from farms that believe in real food – not hormone pumped or GMO infested steroid type foods.

So when you sit down and order their 21 Days Aged Grass Fed Steak, you can rest assured you’re getting steak – and not an unhealthy combo of chocolate bars and potato chips with a little bit of meat (seriously, the mass majority of beef is fed with that).

If you’re not a fan of red meat they’ve been clever enough to come up with a vegetarian alternative as well, but I do urge you to try the Bang Mussels as a starter at least. Might as well add a decent wine to the mix, too – Steltzner Claret should get the job done…but don’t leave without first trying their Old Fashioned – can’t go wrong there. Head home, wind down with some mellow music and toast to a weekend well played.

Life’s all about experiences – one of those experiences is food.

Musings Episode 41: Currency is More Than Just Money…

This week I wanted to share my thoughts on currency and money. A lot of people just see money as a way to pay for things like food, bills, accommodation, clothing, the list goes on and on. It’s also viewed as being able to pay for entertainment like drinking, movies, travel, etc…

It’s something that has different buying power in different countries, and at times can have more buying power depending on which country is the most financially stable.

While all of this is correct, I realize many people don’t take the time out to really analyze and understand/comprehend the word “currency.”

So what’s the dictionary version of “currency” and “money”?

Money:

noun
1. A current medium of exchange in the form of coins and banknotes; coins and banknotes collectively.

“I counted the money before putting it in my wallet”
synonyms: cash, hard cash, ready money

Currency:

noun
1. A system of money in general use in a particular country.

“The dollar was a strong currency.”
synonyms: money, legal tender, cash, banknotes, bills, notes, coins, coinage, specie More

2. The fact or quality of being generally accepted or in use.

“The term gained currency during the second half of the 20th century.”
synonyms: prevalence, circulation, exposure

It’s pretty clear money and currency are synonymous – but let’s focus on the synonym group under “currency.” One word in particular sticks out – circulation.

Now the definition of circulation is pretty clear – the movement or passing of something in any given situation – keyword movement…and any type of movement involves movement of energy, no matter which way you look at it.

So breaking it all down, money is actually movement…and what have you learned about movement since reading this blog and the eBook I offer on my official site? Movement or “consistent progression” is critical to success.

Looking at it that way, you can realize money actually isn’t negative at all. In fact, centuries ago though bartering was trading product for product, it was still the same act as trading money for product – the only thing money did was make “bartering” more flexible and efficient.

Yet bartering and money still do the same thing – create movement and progress – the butcher needed meat to sell at the market, so he had a brother who was a blacksmith.

The blacksmith offered to create proper weapons for the hunter, in exchange for meat at his brother’s shop. The hunter agrees and the blacksmith makes the weapons as payment.

The hunter uses the weapons to hunt and collects his kill, gives it to the blacksmith who needed food, the blacksmith gives his brother who’s the butcher to take and make into cuts of meat where he takes a portion as payment for connecting the hunter with the butcher.

If we take it further, the butcher may have even had a connection to a miner that provided the blacksmith with the proper ores to the blacksmith to create the hunter’s tools – all under the condition the blacksmith also makes better tools for the miner to use.

That’s bartering – there was “movement” of products and services from one person to the next for another product and service…now throw money into the equation and it makes that whole process way more efficient. Everyone just pays everyone at a price that remains “inelastic,” thus speeding up the whole thing.

So really when you think about it, money’s whole purpose is to KEEP MOVING. The tighter you try and hold onto money, the faster it will find a way to go away. Think of it like holding sand in one fist – the tighter you squeeze, the more it slips through the cracks.

Currency is a “current.” Currents are “movements.” Money is exchanged hand to hand, bank account to bank account – money is movement. It’s not meant to stay in one place.

Money isn’t the root of all evil.

Not even the love of money is the root of all evil.

I love money, because it provides me with the opportunity to fuel my business ventures, my website, this blog, travel, learn new experiences, and share information with all my great and dedicated readers.

The idleness of money is the root of all evil. The lack of movement of it. The stagnation of it….Let something sit for too long and it’ll either collect dust, stop functioning, or decay. It’s like a car – you’ve gotta wash it, dry it, wax it. You’ve gotta turn that engine over every now and again. You’ve gotta take it out for a drive, and check up on the hoses, seals, etc.

For The Weekenders: Saloons, Bull Riding, and Dirty Laundry…

First off…Happy New Year.

Secondly, I hope everyone had a great New Year’s Eve – I can certainly say I did. This For The Weekenders I thought I’d try something different from the usual pace…you know how it is – upscale lounge bars, jet set destinations, and the like…most of my readers know by now I’m not really into divey bars or anything. Though I have a small confession – a few places were able to capture my attention – call them the kind of hot spots that walk the line when it comes to aesthetic appeal and quality. So here’s the rundown on 3 places that are for that night when you just wanna go casual. Enjoy.

There’s a point in your natural adult life where going to the newest, most modern late night hot spots can get a bit, well, monotonous…you know, the same crowd, the same drinks, the same music. Sometimes it’s nice to have a change. Something where you know for a fact someone can’t really say “I was there last week too! Where were you?” Good news…Crane’s Downtown in Los Angeles serves up just that.

…with a vault entrance saloon. Yeah. We’re getting original.

What’s the best part about this place? You wouldn’t know it exists because it’s underground. In a safe. That was once part of an old bank (obviously). The owners who bought the place decided to get creative and lo and behold – Crane’s Downtown was born. Though they don’t have a website, which they seriously should in my opinion this place is too good not to have a huge web presence (call me, I’m here to help.), don’t let that stop you from checking them out.

Why? It’s a mix between dive bar, saloon, and an upscale joint. While the three descriptions being fused together sounds odd, it’s actually a better combination than one would expect. It’s cozy. It’s vintage. It’s unique. The price is right. It’s friendly. It’s everything you could ask for. What are you waiting for – get your arse down to Crane’s Downtown this weekend. You’ll love it (and thank me later.)

Since we’re on the topic of saloons and all, might as well bring to light another great place that mixes a nice modern but gritty feel together…but this time with extreme sports.

I won’t lie – I wasn’t always a city slicker…for a good part of my youth I lived in the country – I’m talking about country so far set in the woods the nearest, “proper” grocery store was 10 miles out and your closest neighbor farther than shouting distance. I learned about cars, wild life, and the joys of target practice….though somehow I could never get into country music. That’s another story though – the bottom line is, there’s one thing in particular that always fascinated me – bull riding. Fortunately, there is a place that can satisfy my secret shame, where no one’s to judge.

I call it “country pleasures for city dwellers.” – A title in progress, but *shrugs*…

It’s pretty straight forward – there’s a bar. There’s a grill. There’s fire pits. There’s bourbon. Then there’s a mechanical bull that’s just waiting to take down it’s next contender – equipped with an on board camera to capture the look on your face as it tries to throw you. Go ahead and send a thank you card to PBR Rock Bar. What does PBR stand for exactly? Professional Bull Riding. Yeah – these guys mean business.

Here’s what I recommend – make a reservation. You’ll need it with the crowd and all. You’ll also need some quality booze and food – the food’s for after the bull ride. Knock back a few glasses of bourbon on the rocks (try for American Honey), and make sure you’ve got proper riding attire – sturdy denim and proper boots are a must.

Hopefully you’ve trained for this so you can impress that date you brought along and possibly hustle a few of your city friends who never knew you had an interest (or skill) for such things…then get out there and grab your short moment of attention and fame. If you came out alright, my guess is that date of yours will have a cold one waiting for you…among other things.

Let’s…let’s just replace that with a Dos Equis though. There’s some things I just never could get used to.

Strut past your friends while you’re at it and collect that nice $300 or so pooled bet money and order yourself up a nice meal for the appetite you worked up while showing off your sheer awesomeness to the world – or at least most of Las Vegas…and hey, maybe if you’re daring enough after about 3 or 4 glasses of bourbon, you can even get into singing “Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy.”

Just maybe.

I’ll leave that one up to you though…

After all that I’d say you’ll pretty much work up a sweat.

Might as well not stop there and keep going – though your mother may have said never air your dirty laundry, I think you can make an exception – this is a different kind, the type that’s a whole lot more fun. Might as well finish off that weekend right with a little place back in L.A…

Following the rough and ready style weekend I think this is a great place to kick back and wind down…known for it’s early 20th century look and feel, it’s one of those places where you know you’re some place nice but don’t have to necessarily dress for the occasion – and really, what’s better than that?

This one changes the station on that radio you have there though – Dirty Laundry (that’s the name of the place, by the way) switches to rock and hip-hop for music while keeping things interesting with their various and peculiar but eye catching décor, you’ll feel like you’re in a film intended for the modern but brilliantly mixed up kind of crowd that gets you wanting to join in all the fun. Be prepared for hot people…you’ve gotta appreciate the plethora of hot people…and drinks. Gatsby himself would probably be seen slipping into a place like this once or twice in his day.

Dirty laundry never looked so clean.

Musings Episode 40: Tighten Up…

Hope you all had a great Christmas and are looking forward to partying it up this New Year’s Eve. This episodic musing is really more of a follow up from one I wrote a few weeks ago on clean slates…and it’s gonna get a bit serious.

With the close of the year so closely upon us, I’m sure most of you are already making new year’s resolutions to knock off at the beginning of the year – I know a lot of my clients have, especially some of my fitness ones.

On the flip side, I also know that many new year’s resolutions are also broken shortly after the new year begins…I don’t want you guys to do that. Not my subscribers on this blog or my official site. I want you to understand that a new year’s resolution isn’t just something you write on a piece of paper – it’s a promise. A goal. An objective…to yourself. Something that should be followed through with and accomplished.

This new year, I want you guys to tighten up, and stick to your guns – play the game out to the end, no matter what…because crossing things off a list you’ve set out to do is far more satisfactory than the 100 “what ifs” floating around in your head.

What do I mean by tighten up exactly?

Be a bit hard on yourself.

Take some responsibility. The same way you get up every morning and commit to brushing your teeth, getting a shower, and making it to work, I want you to do the same when it comes to your own goals. The same way you remember your kid’s birthday, your anniversary, and buying gifts for loves ones (or even that “surprise Santa” office junk) I want you to do the same thing with your goals. You owe it to yourself.

The same way a fitness consultant is with their clients is or a drill sergeant is with their soldiers, I want you to be with yourself.

It’s a sense of obligation you should feel.

If a dying man diagnosed with cancer can attempt to cross off his list all the things he’d wish he’d done, you can too.

Because really, not to get dark but every day, humans are dying.

Time is non-refundable.

It’s up to you, and you only to make the decision to turn those minutes into minutes of LIFE.

Unless you’re under 18 or in diapers, you’re completely responsible for yourself. You have no excuse.

…which brings me to another point – there are kids out there who have to fend for themselves, even under 18 – if they can do it, you sure as fuck can do it too.

Don’t just survive. THRIVE.

I want you to understand every single person has two potentials:

To be a WINNER.

Or a complete fucking loser.

The choice is yours.

Life doesn’t have to have sacrifices.

The only sacrifice is allowing the time to build your ideal life instead of settling.

…and really – that’s not a sacrifice at all.

So tighten up, get your shit together, and knock out whatever goals it is you’re planning this year.

If it’s to lose 10 pounds, do it.

If it’s to start your own business, do it.

Fuck, if it’s to get yourself a new car without getting yourself in debt, fucking do it.

Just make a decision and stick with it.

I want you all to succeed so badly I feel it in my fucking TEETH.

…but I can’t force you to do shit – you’ve gotta do it yourself.

So choose.

The decision is yours.

But whatever decision you make – make sure you have no regrets.

I started this blog because I had a message to share, along with valuable information and insight.

I started this blog to let people know that they have WAY MORE potential than they give themselves credit for.

YOU have more potential than you give yourself credit for.

You do.

You really. Fucking. Do.

Get out there and be something for yourself.

For The Weekenders: 3 Ways to Celebrate New Year’s Eve and Bring in the New Year Right…

The New Year. A time for friends, family, and lovers. Depending on where you’re at in the world, any one of the three of those categories are placed on a higher importance scale than the others. Sometimes, if you’re close with all 3, it can be a real mission trying to figure out how to split up your New Year’s Eve…or other times, you may just not have a bloody clue where to start with any of them in general.

New Year’s Eve is a time of the year where you bring in a new mark of time; a different, refreshing world, full of new opportunities and the anticipation of starting with a clean slate. It’s something that when celebrated, you really want to celebrate right – unforgettable, as you would any other major holiday or even birthdays.

I really hope everyone had an excellent Christmas, and got a chance to see The Wolf of Wall Street. An insanely epic movie, if you haven’t already or maybe just haven’t heard of it I recommend checking out now. It’s the best acting of Leonardo DiCaprio I’ve seen since The Great Gatsby and Django.

Taking into consideration you’re probably lining up for New Year’s Eve, I thought I’d take the time out to write up this great list of activities to do – from low key to party hard, there’s bound to be something for you to get out there (or stay in) and do while making your New Year’s Eve one to remember. Enjoy.

3 Ways to Celebrate New Year’s Eve and Bring in the New Year Right…

The Playbook.

The Friends. – It’s about time you and a few of your friends started learning about The Parliament…as in, the Champagne Bar. I recommend checking out “The Sky Room.” A place for who they so affectionately call “Lords and Ladies,” Parliament is filled with 5 bars and over 30 tables, decked out with enormous 15 foot chandeliers, and 100″ projection screens. Carefully thought out attention to detail in seating, lighting, and heck, even wall detail, this place was designed for class and nothing less.

Push through the massive mahogany doors and you’ll quickly realize the aim for Parliament was for it to be a mix between Old English class and American sophistication. Though new and exclusive to Chicago, this is the perfect place to hit up on NYE. In saying that….haul ass and get your tickets now for their New Year’s Eve bash, if they haven’t sold out already.

The Lover. – Let’s say you want something a little more low key though…something more intimate more, one-on-one. 2013’s been a good year to you, and you find yourself going steady with someone…or *shrugs* you know, you met them last week. I’m not one to judge. New Year’s Eve is only a few days away and now you find yourself trying to either make a memorable experience, or a great first impression. What’s a place where you can play it safe and knock out both, no matter how heavy the commitment? Michael Mina 74.

Take your pick in cozying up to the bar while you and your date wait for drinks, or if you’re with your S.O. get more intimate by enjoying the view of the bar from luxurious leather banquettes. Averse to the “sterile” look many upscale restaurants offer, Michael Mina has a warm and inviting feel to it…and if you’ve learned anything, when your mission is to get close with someone – setting is key.

You can book a private room or make simple reservations. With an extensive dinner and late night menu, there’s no worry of that special one-on-one moment or sinfully deep conversation being interrupted – well, okay maybe the last part may be a pinch interrupted…when you both find it’s suddenly past midnight and hear the epic sounds of legendary DJs and suddenly feel the sense of even more intimacy as the lights slowly dim.

Order up the Tempura Maitake Mushrooms, American Wagyu Beef Skewers, a couple Rule #237’s (that’s a drink, by the way), throw in a pair of Michael’s Margaritas, and prepare to watch the night unfold into one of the best New Year’s Eves you’ve had in a while.

The Family. Time for some good clean fun. Fireworks are probably the one thing that still fascinates people since childhood. Whether they remind you of Disney World as a kid or maybe some other special occasion or holiday, they’re still a time tested way to represent and symbolize a big celebration.

If you so happen to be anywhere near the San Francisco area on New Year’s Eve, be sure to check out San Francisco’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks Show. The rundown? Being held at the Embarcadero Center, the show’s gonna be a waterfront gig, starting at precisely 11:59 p.m. – not a minute earlier, not a minute later. Prepare to watch in awe with family and loved ones as fireworks are launched from barges 1000 feet out in the bay, just south of the Ferry building near Pier 14, while snapping pictures/video galore as you stare on in amazement while the many colors light up the sky.

The hot spots for the best view are gonna be south of Sinbad’s Restaurant, right along Embarcadero and just between Mission and Folsom Street. The best part? These guys are actually taking the time out to make sure the fireworks are synced to music played through mega speakers throughout Pier 14 to almost the Bay Bridge. Stay close to Pier 14 though, and you’ll hear the music loud and clear.

How’s that for bringing in the new year right?

On the road to success, if you’ve got plans for your business ventures, with which you’re running with like mad, and people start bashing it – remember to focus on your plan, your idea, and nothing else. People who are always occupied with what other people have going for themselves are not always the most constructive or positive vibrations to be around.

While they’re minding your business, focus on your yours. Because often, someone who minds your business and tells you how to get a “real job” think of a “real career” and focus on the “real things” in life, more than they do their own – are not looking out for your best interest.

Musings Episode 39: I’m All In…

Was giving my computer a tune up the other day, organizing some files and programs, when I came across a game I hadn’t played in a while: PKR, a 3D poker game, UK based. Quite interesting to look through all the chips I’d racked up over the time I’d had the account.

This got me thinking about a few things, how poker is one of those games where it’s all about taking emotion out of the equation, keeping your game tight and close…especially when the stakes get high. Reading people’s emotions or reactions, determining their next move (it’s even possible to do it online, with enough training), and both knowing and understanding when the time is right to play hard, go “all in.”

In factoring all these disciplines and qualities in, you really have to admit, poker players are something to be admired – the same way you would in any given combat sport I respect the players better than me and try and learn from them. Poker is all about taking risks, while understanding the risks you’re taking aren’t really risks but instead pre-determined moves from a long string of organized and evaluative thinking.

When you think about it, the same principles apply to life. Not that every move is pre-determined, of course there are some unexpected variables and factors you never see that get thrown your way – but even then, it’s about relaxing, maintaining your composure, and through the thick of it all, thinking up and structuring a solution.

I have a saying, “if you’re gonna talk about it, it better be to find a solution.” In other words, if you’ve encountered a negative situation or a problem in general, if you’re going to talk for hours about it, at least be talking about it to find a constructive solution. Otherwise, you’ve just wasted time in idle conversation.

Once you do find a solution or way to remedy whatever it is you’re dealing with, even if it’s not a problem but instead just another step towards your own success, you’ve gotta make it your business to avoid hesitation, hit the throttle and cross that checkpoint, make it to the finish line.

You’ve gotta go “all in” when you not just think – but feel, know the time is right.

This is why I encourage people to play different games of all sorts, from board games to physical activity, especially Poker.

It takes patience. Discipline. Situational Awareness. Assessment. Raising the stakes at the right time, and raising them BIG…and as Kenny Rogers says, even knowing when to fold.

Try out PKR this week, the account takes a few minutes to set up and they offer both simulation and real cash games. Trying out the game a few rounds will teach you about your own emotions, reactions, and instinctive reflexes in situations when things go south or get tense.

I know, this For The Weekenders is a bit late…but with good reason. With the holidays coming up and all, I thought I’d make this For The Weekenders…special. I’ve been doing some Christmas shopping the past week or so and have come across some great stuff that I personally would love to have and definitely consider buying. So here’s 12 gift ideas that’ll knock off any recipient’s socks…or stockings? Enjoy.

#12. Complete Bar Tool Set – The Modern Mixologist. For The Mini Bar Enthusiasts. We all have that one friend…orders drinks we’ve never heard of, has the (not so) mini bar at home with enough gadgets and mixology utensils to make the best bar tender envious, and albeit all this, could still do with a few more “accessories”.
