For The Weekenders: Classic Cars, Little Bars, Pizza Hackers…

This For The Weekenders is all about one thing – kicking your Converse up on the table and enjoying life. No dress codes. No fancily dressed bouncers. No 35th floor city view. Nope. This weekend we’re talking novelty, nostalgia, and all things in between. Enjoy. 😉

For The Weekenders: Classic Cars, Little Bars, Pizza Hackers…

With the arrival of spring, fine weather calls for beach outings, picnics, and road trips. Nothing’s better than a clear blue sky with full, white clouds and the sun beaming down on you while just enough breeze makes it warm, not humid. Nothing beats hitting the highway with old tunes, close friends (or your S.O./new found spring fling), and somewhere good to go.

But sporting around in a Prius just won’t cut it. No, you need something real. Something respectable. Something unforgettable.

This is where DB Autosportif comes into play.

For those days when you just want to get away from it all and just enjoy the hum of an engine, good tunes, and the wind in your hair. What’s really cool about this company is they’re small, but take great pride in what they do. Run by a team of three, these guys decided to take their passion and turn it into something they could share with people everyday.

So here’s how it goes – you order up a car 24 hours in advance and have it delivered to wherever you want within the Bay Area of Northern California. Literally – anywhere. So if you thought about playing hooky at work tomorrow and want to pull a Ferris Bueller, you can.

“Oh Sloane, dear, hurry along now.”

Once you order the car it’s delivered to you the next day – the question is though, which car do you want? That depends really – whether you’re a fan of convertible or standard top….but if you picked convertible, I recommend an American classic, the 1960 Chevy Corvette Roadster – also known as “Eddie.”

bars, DB Autosportif, For the Weekenders, For The Weekenders Classic Cars Little Bars Pizza Hackers, For The Weekenders Classic Cars Little Bars Pizza Hackers Rego's Life, nightlife, oddjob san francisco, pizza, PizzaHacker, rego's life for the weekenders, Regos Life, san francisco weekend activities, weekend activities

There’s just some things in life that no matter how old they get, beat even the newest, most cutting edge inventions. This ’60 Corvette is one of them. It’s the perfect car for that day when you just want a little one on one time with someone that means something special to you.

I’ve always been more of a fan of standard top cars, but pieces of art like these have a tendency to change my mind and throw “preferences” out the window – because at the end of the day, it’s the fact that at some point in history, a group of people took science and art, and made something fucking beautiful…yet powerful. Take this car on one of the scenic drives DB Autosportif offers with a picnic basket (containing some choice wine) and you won’t be disappointed.

If you’re really more of a standard top fan though, don’t hesitate to try the 1965 Ferrari 330GT 2+2, aka “Enzo.” A four seater instead of a two, you can bring some friends along and make a day out of cruising around to different awesome places.

Or, you know, just cruise to the next private airport.

…so let’s say you skip the picnic for two and do decide to hit the town with friends instead? Couple things – you’ll want to start with a full stomach.

But I’m not talking about the nearest franchise restaurant…and God knows sitting in some air conditioned upscale restaurant wouldn’t exactly mesh with the kind of day you’re trying to create. Nope – remember, it’s all about casual clothes, comfortable shoes, and enjoying things most people take for granted.

So it’s gonna be first stop, PizzaHacker. Why? Because…

LOOK AT ALL THIS DELICIOUSNESS.

Seriously. There’s pizza. Then there’s wood burning oven baked pizza. Pies like this beat your standard franchise pizza any day. Care, energy, and emotion is put into everyone of these pizzas, because when someone’s passionate about what they like, that’s exactly what happens.

The guy Jeff who crafts these things is no cheapskate when it comes to ingredients either. He’s all about organic ingredients, “fancy” salts, choice toppings, and carefully crafted dough. I have ALWAYS been a fan of pizza, so whenever someone comes along and shares that same passion, I’ve no choice but to tip my hat to them and say “well done sir/madam.”

I admire this guy for what he does – how he started. Entrepreneurship at it’s best. So if you’re in SF be sure to check out his website and his food. You won’t regret it – but you will regret not doing so.

So you and a few friends have loaded up on pizza, checked out one of the great scenic drives recommended by DB Autosportif, and now you’re looking for someplace to rest your Ray-Bans and have a good drink.

But you don’t just want a standard beer. Naa, you want something different. That’s what this weekend is all about. So you all agree to hit up SRO, cleverly hidden in OddJob over on Mission St…and once you get there, you realize you couldn’t have made a better choice.

The place is similar to that of some Japanese bars I’ve been in. So small it’s not like your standard bars where you can sit back, lounge, and relax – but it’s that same smallness that adds intimacy on a great date or closeness with friends when you all feel like really bonding.

SRO stands for well, Standing Room Only, and rightfully so – it’s only got a few stools. So don’t expect to be all sprawled out – this is the kind of place you have to feel comfortable being close to strangers in, in order to truly enjoy it.

While the mixologist here will make you a drink on request, it’s best just to let these guys do their thing and use their imagination. After all, there are hundreds if not thousands of bars, lounges, and restaurants that you can go to and simply tell someone what drink you want. The treat at SRO is, these guys will mix something up for you, and see if it’s to your liking. Look for Joey, and he’ll be sure to take care of you.

One last thing, no plastic allowed here – cash only. Quit your whining though – you wanted the classic experience.

Plus, driving a 1960’s sports car while paying for everything with plastic is a little goofy to say the least.

As always…

Stay awesome.

For The Weekenders: Three Liquors You Should Know About…

Every once in a while, it’s nice to share some of your favorite things with other people. In particularly, people whom you enjoy having a small gathering with.

Often the trend nowadays is for everyone to bring their own alcohol, and share it around – but if you’re looking to share something more than just beer or wine, considering that’s what most usually bring, here’s three kinds of alcohol that will be sure to make a great night for everyone. Enjoy.

For The Weekenders Three Liquors You Should Know About, Rego's Life For The Weekenders, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders, Rego's Life For The Weekenders Three Liquors You Should Know About, Regos Life, regoslife, american honey, new amsterdam gin, jaegermeister, best liquors, the best liquor, best liquor brands, best selling liquor, best party liquor, best kind of liquor,

Let’s start off with my favorite….Jagermeister. More of a digestif liqueur, this stuff is amazing. Good God…there’s so much you can do with it – so many drinks you can make. The most well known being Jagerbombs – Red Bull and Jager (formerly Jager and beer)…but there are many, many more mixes than that.

I really enjoy the taste of this stuff, not to mention the fact it’s made of 56 herbs and spices. Usually when I drink I try and drink clean, and am very particular about the type of alcohol I take into my system. Hence why if for example, if anyone were to hang out with me, it’s more than likely you wouldn’t see me mixing alcohols.

So besides the ever-so-famous Jagerbomb what are two more drinks that are worthy of mentioning? Read on…

The Bob Dylan. – Fairly simple, with a decent proof. You’re gonna need a blender for this one – it was originally made with Surge…but that was discontinued. Then I used to make it with Vault…and that was discontinued. Now, I used Mountain Dew. Take 12 oz. Mountain Dew, 4 oz. Jagermeister, and 16 oz. ice. Put all this in a blender, throw the top on, and blend until smooth. Careful though – this is soda you’re blending, after all.

Serve it in a highball glass and what do you get? One chilling, refreshing drink with a nice aftertaste. The ice M.D. taste hit you first, with a nice finish of jager once it warms up as it goes down. Try it out, and if you have already, comment below.

Reservoir Dog. Named after one of my favorite movies, this one’s quick and simple to make, as all it takes is one part Bailey’s Irish cream and one part Jager. Mix both over ice cubes, strain, and before you know it you’ve got one excellent drink that didn’t takes years of mixology to perfect.

Jager, depending on your alcohol tolerance, is one of those alcohols that give you a nice buzz without the terrible hangover. Quite honestly, what causes a terrible hangover is one of two things:

A) Cheaply made alcohol
B) Not enough oxygen to the brain – not drinking enough water after you’ve had your fill of alcohol

Next up…New Amsterdam Gin. Usually, I’m a bit of a gin snob. I like Beefeater London Dry Gin all the way – but sometimes, just sometimes, I like to change things up. New Amsterdam Gin is (suprisingly) something that caught my attention one day while I was out with a few friends getting some spirits for a small pool party.

For The Weekenders Three Liquors You Should Know About, Rego's Life For The Weekenders, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders, Rego's Life For The Weekenders Three Liquors You Should Know About, Regos Life, regoslife, american honey, new amsterdam gin, jaegermeister, best liquors, the best liquor, best liquor brands, best selling liquor, best party liquor, best kind of liquor

It’s a bit lacking in Juniper, but it does quite well in fruity drinks, due to its citrusy flavor. It’s also one of the better gins if you’re looking to pay less than $20.

Personally, when it comes to gin I have one favorite drink. It’s very simple, and sometimes boring – but with my fitness regime and again, conscientious nature, it’s something I don’t mind. Sometimes, the best things are the simplest – one of which is your classic G&T, or Gin and Tonic.

If you’re looking for more flavor though, these two should do the trick:

Classic Clover Club. – Another classic, but with a twist. Created in the 1800’s, this is one of those classics that everyone should try at least once.

All it takes is 2 oz. gin, half a lemon’s worth of juice, 1 egg white, 1 tsp. sugar, and lastly 1/4 raspberry syrup. Pour everything in to a cocktail shaker with ice, and shake like your life depends on it. This is so the sugar and egg mix well, and properly. Strain it into a cocktail glass and you’re good to go. Many people replace the raspberry syrup with grenadine but to be quite honest, without the syrup the drink is nothing to brag about. Raspberry syrup is key.

If you like mint, Caruso is for you. This one is both old-fashioned and cocktail glass worthy, and is simple enough for even the novice bartender to make.

The ingredients? 1 oz. gin, 1 oz. dry vermouth, and a touch of green creme de menthe. Pour them into a mixing glass with ice, stir, and stir well, strain into a glass and presto – you’ve just found a drink for the upcoming St. Patty’s day.

…but maybe you’re not a gin fan. Some people hate it. Maybe you don’t even like Jager – some say it smells like medicine….but everybody loves honey, right?

Cue Wild Turkey American Honey. What can I say about this stuff…except for the fact it’s effing awesome. You can drink it straight, on the rocks, or mixed. It’s got a sweet start and robust finish. The honey is so thick, it coats the glass quite easily even if you’ve accidentally let the ice melt. Interesting fact: Whiskey back in the day used to actually be considered medicinal, and was the preferred drink over water due to a safety point of view – considering the filtration process a few hundred years ago wasn’t exactly…effective.

Sometimes I like to make Masala Chai (mixed spice tea) and spike it with an ounce or two of American Honey, makes for a real nice nightcap.

But if you prefer your drinks cold and not warm, here’s two recipes that’ll knock your socks off:

Let’s start simple, with American Honey and Ginger Beer. – Just as the name says all you really need is a large tumbler glass, limes, ginger beer, and about 30 ml of American Honey.

Pour the A.H. in the tumbler glass, slice the limes up into wedges, squeeze four over ice in that same tumbler glass, and top up with ginger beer. Keep in mind I said ginger BEER, not ginger ale – big difference. You can usually find the ginger beer in the “ethnic” aisle of your local grocer. No Canada Dry here folks.

Nothing like a little Lo-Fi THC. – If you’re looking for something a little more rewarding to make – as in, complex, then you’ll really enjoy Lo-Fi THC. I love making this whenever friends are over. I don’t care what anyone says, the way in which you mix a drink determines the flavor, so follow these instructions closely…

First, you’ll need the following:

30ml Wild Turkey Bourbon
30ml American Honey
30ml Campari
Dissolved sugar cubes
Dash of whiskey bitters
An orange rind twist for garnish

Throw all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker GLASS. Stir 3 times clockwise, then ONE time anti-clockwise. Place your ice in a tumbler glass and start pouring the ingredients through a strainer over the aforementioned ice. Top it off with the orange rind in the glass and voila – you just became 50x more impressive to that date you invited over.

You’re welcome…and I hope everyone has an awesome weekend. 😉

As always…

Stay awesome.

For The Weekenders: Create Your Weekend…

This weekend, it’s all about you. What you want to do, where you want to go, who you want to see, and where you want to be. Figured it’d be a good idea to change things up a bit from the regular For The Weekenders and put you, in the driver’s seat this time. So here’s three great apps I personally use whenever I wanna just wing it. They’ve been around for a while now, and I’m surprised not as many people have them considering that fact.

Bottom line, when you’re looking to make a choice on a whim, the last thing you need is something slowing down that impulse or snap decision. Fortunately, these apps help you avoid encountering such a clutchy mishap. Enjoy.

Create Your Weekend. Starting Now.

for the weekenders create your weekend, rego's life for the weekenders, rego's life, for the weekenders, rego's life for the weekenders create your weekend, urban daddy the next move, yelp app, yelp monacle, fandango app, ud the next move app, weekend activities, fun weekend activities, restaurant apps, movie apps

So your friends decided to drop in on you by surprise and now you guys are out on the next plane to [insert awesome city here]. The minute you touch down you all have no fucking clue where to go, but you know you’re hungry, thirsty, and ready to party. What do you do? Casually reach for your smartphone and tap that little app called “Yelp.”

Yeah I know. Yelp’s been around for a while now…but surprisingly, its app is underused and underrated. Sure, you can search for restaurants, bars, etc the typical, boring way…but what about when you’re out walking around downtown and have no sense of direction and no idea where you’re going? Cue Monocle.

What is monocle exactly? Oh you know, just a bundle of awesomeness. That utilizes augmented reality. Remember all those futuristic shows you used to watch when you were a kid? Oddly enough without even realizing it we’ve reached the future all short of flying cars. Computers with touch screen capability that fit in the palm of your hand, voice to text, A.I., use of Wi-Fi in airplanes, robot vacuum cleaners, you name it most of it’s been done….then comes along this sweet ass app.

If virtual reality and actual reality had a baby, they’d name it Monocle. Or simulated reality – but honestly, Monocle sounds way cooler.

Long story short, you simply open the Yelp app, select “Monocle,” hold your phone up in front of you, and away you go – a screen of what’s right in front of you, with access to information on restaurants, lounges, bars, and any other activity you can imagine, reviews included. You get the name, the hours, the review ratings, pricing, and most importantly distance, of any restaurant within your GPS‘ close radius all at quite literally, your fingertips.

You can turn around full circle and see every POI (point of interest) within that range. When something piques your curiosity, you simply tap to select it, get the directions, further stats, etc, and in under five minutes you’ve just found a place you and you friends can party. Welcome to the future. Go you.

How about those situations where you’re on a casual date, you know, just coffee, conversation, that sort of thing. Things seem to be going pretty well considering you’ve been meeting up casually, and quite honestly you like to maintain a “mysterious but observant” aura. So you both start on the subject of media, books, usual things that help humans determine similar interest that don’t go too deep, and your date mentions they’ve been figuratively dying to see that new movie that just came out.

The night is still young, it’s quite a low key, casual date, and there’s no particular plans set in stone except enjoying each other’s company…would you continue sitting there talking, or use that opportunity to do something pretty cool?

Good – I was hoping you’d pick that last option. So here’s the game plan – you get your date to elaborate a bit more on that movie they were talking about, while you, my dear friend, quickly look at your smart phone as if you’ve just received a text, and be sure to continue engaging in conversation so you don’t come off as an arse. Meanwhile, you’ll pop open your Fandango app and book tickets for two then and there at the nearest cinema available.

It’s from here, after your date says “…and yeah, that’s what it’s about. I just can’t wait to go see it,” that you smile and say “you know, that’s funny, I had a feeling you’d like that film, so I booked us tickets. Show starts in 30 – wanna get out of here?”

Smoothness points: 10. Mystery: kept. Observance points: 50. Skip the popcorn, get the sour patch candies…or no candy at all.

Saving the best for last, this app is one I use quite often, and honestly, I’ve gotta say, it always pulls through. Let’s say you’re not out on a casual, low key date. Let’s say your friends and you are in swank mode and hopped a plane to Vegas. Let’s say you’re out with someone who’s high maintenance. Or let’s just say you feel like abusing your bank account a little bit – why shouldn’t you? You work hard at your business.

This is where Urban Daddy’s: The Next Move app, comes into play. Why do I love this thing so much? Because it’s so fucking awesome. Seriously. It’s got a nice little human touch, and points you to only the best spots in town. Scratch that – it doesn’t just point you to the best spots, but personalizes the experience and tailors it with just a few short scenario descriptions that fit whatever situation you’re in at that given moment.

I’ve had this app since the beginning – stuck with it through the glitches, and today can honestly say the guys over at UD have expanded it into a damn fine piece of programming that they should be proud to brag about.

So the next time you’re out and about, either with your closest friends or flying solo working on your charm skills, remember this app. Get a little adventurous, forget all your usual spots (unless they’re really primo – as in, exceptional quality.), and live a little. Your friends will thank you. That 10 you’ve been flirting with for the past 10 minutes will thank you. You’ll thank me later.

For The Weekenders: Valentine’s Day Ideas – Rego Style.

Valentine’s Day: A day that represents love, love of money, flighty holiday flings, and commercialism. Basically just a whole lot of definitions. Usually, there’s about 3 kinds of people up and about on this day – the lovers, the players, and the anti-valentiners (yes, I just invented a word.). Figured I’d put a spin on this For The Weekenders, and share with all three of those categories some excellent Valentine’s Day ideas – whether you love it, loathe it, or just plain don’t care about it. Enjoy. 😉

Valentine’s Day Ideas. Rego Style.

For The Anti-Valentiner. I remember one of my anti-Valentine years. It was the year Chinese New Year fell on the same date (take a guess). A handful of my friends and I were single that year, and we decided to rock it unconventional. Before Valentine’s Night began (and things got…crazy) I hit the town during the day with a friend of mine, and we decided to go for Chinese buffet – in celebration of Chinese New Year, and a big fuck you to Valentine’s Day.

It went alright.

Besides the stares.

In retrospect, I now understand why there were so many older dudes looking on with mouths agape…considering we were in a restaurant. Eating family style. Sharing food. An interesting day indeed.

To avoid any friendly outings turning into *ahem* “misunderstandings,” I recommend bringing two or three friends to this next place I’m going to suggest. Which is also a place that both houses and serves my second two favorite things – donuts and alcohol. Everyone loves donuts. My first? Gummie bears and alcohol. Side note – is it gummy bears, or gummie bears? I’ve lost track over the years… Anyway, cue Glazed Donut Bistro. Donuts for Grown-ups – which is conveniently their slogan.

What can I say about this place – it’s awesome.

Their menu? One of a kind.

Their donuts? Artisan quality – no, scratch that – Artisan. If you’re on the road to fitness cover your eyes – food porn alert in 3..2…

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Yeah. Three I recommend? Bourbon Pecan Pie, Tres Tres Leches, and S’more Please.

As for their alcohol options…heaven sent. So this is my suggestion:

For starters, order up the 24 donut hole special with 6 sauces – y’know. to get the palette ready. Wash that down with a bit of Almond Iced Coffee or Craft Hot Chocolate. Savor this while waiting for the main course…

Fried Chicken Beignets; lightly sweetened boneless (win) chicken with a maple dip. Salty and savory in one explosive flavor. Proceed to then cleanse that from the palette with your choice of red or white wine – or if you’re really feeling fancy, some Dom Perignon, then bask in that bliss for about 5-10 minutes.

valentine's day ideas, valentine days, valentines ideas, valentine day ideas, great valentines day ideas, fun valentines day ideas, Valentines Day, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders, For The Weekenders Valentine's Day Ideas - Rego Style, Glazed Donut Bistro, Glazed Donut Bistro LA

It’s not over yet.

Proceed to dessert – because now’s the time to ready that half full stomach of yours with various donuts of your choice – shoot for the Cherry Amaretto and a dessert wine, if it suits your fancy. After all – it’s anti-Valentine’s Day – you have a right to be anti-something-healthy. Ask for the check with pride and strut out not entirely sober and readying yourself for the dentist next week.

For The Lovers. For those of you who aren’t anti-Valentine’s Day this year, you’re probably going to want to pull away from the norm of things. You know – chocolates. Typical dinner at that favorite place your S.O. always likes. Heart shaped balloons or dust collecting animals. *shrugs* Meh. Typical. Could be better. Could be worse.

Let’s shoot for better though. Here’s a way to look adventurous without suggesting sky diving and champagne. Unless you’re into that. In which case by all means – go for it. If not, how about making this Valentine’s Day….intimate.

The place? The Place.

valentine's day ideas, valentine days, valentines ideas, valentine day ideas, great valentines day ideas, fun valentines day ideas, Valentines Day, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders, For The Weekenders Valentine's Day Ideas - Rego Style, The Place NYC

No that…that’s the name of the restaurant. The Place. Christ. Keep up.

All jokes aside though – unless you purely suck at the art of seduction, you seriously can’t go wrong here. It’s a great spot to go when things are getting serious, when things already are serious, and when you want to try your hand at things getting serious.

Unlike most sterile looking “hot spot romantic restaurants” it has an aesthetic appeal that pulls you in, during any time of the day – but especially at night – and is sure to make both you and your S.O. feel like you’re in a world all your own.

Plus they’ve got great wine. *nods* if all else fails, wine prevails. The food menu is diverse enough where you can choose to eat light, or if you and your S.O. have been in it for the long haul these past [insert any number greater than 2] years you can both stuff your faces.

Although to be fair…I’ve always been pro-stuffed face. Either with food or alcohol

The best part? It’s all organic. Meaning a truly different and non-run-of-the-mill dining experience. I recommend making a reservation now, in case you’re still running around trying to figure something out last minute.

Life lesson: Never leave things last minute when it comes to things in relationships. Apparently a Hershey’s Bar and Valentine’s Day meme is not considered funny. Plus….no one wants to be this person:

For The Players. It’s a New Year. Meaning it’s time for a new kind of fun. Living the single life has many glorious, un-punishable benefits – like, I don’t know, not having to “remember” to tell your S.O. that you’re having a night out on the town with friends.

You answer to no one. You needn’t worry about pleasing anyone. You do whatever you want, when you want, how you want.

It’s basically awesome. Plus – it has the obvious financial benefits.

Though this Valentine’s Day, if you really wanna treat yourself to something special, you may not be saving all that much money…but the experience ahead? Well worth it.

I won’t lie – I like awesome experiences. And traveling. And more awesome experiences. And great, tucked away, hidden spots that no one else knows about. And awesome experiences. And crazy unique parties.

But mostly awesome experiences. On which note I’d like to say Miami never ceases to deliver. The place? E11even Miami. A place where you can safely order drinks that are on fire, without being ridiculed (Cocktail Factory memories.). It also reminds me of Ageha.

If Dionysis (Greek God) started a Nightclub, he would’ve named it this.

What makes E11even Miami so special? Oh you know, nothing to big, except it’s open 24/7. Literally. As in, it never closes.

What is E11even Miami? Well…

Let the video speak for itself. During the day it’s a day club – bars, cool mechanical roofs, unique food, a very loungesque (yes, I invented another word) feel to it. You can eat. Drink. Zone out with the big TVs. Be merry.

During the evening? Wear your high roller outfit – you’re about to step into another world. Think DJs and center stage what looks to be hydraulic platforms, cabaret girls and contortionists twirling around on something similar to your last penthouse’s drapes. You can drink. Zone out with good music. Be on Mary (see what I did there? Yeah.)

The place is massive – 25,000 square feet massive. They don’t just serve you drinks, but put on a show while they’re at it. This is a place you want to go to really enjoy.

Is there beauty? Yes.

Is there a certain vibe of exoticism? Yes.

Is there near borderline nudity? Find out for yourself.

I recommend bringing a few friends along – unless you really want to fly solo…but really, this place is so massive your group can split, fly solo, then meet up again if you get bored. Which I highly doubt you will but still – it pays to have figurative insurance policy.

The main thing here is this is one experience you don’t want to pass up, if you’re currently rocking the single life. I’m all about aesthetics…and why shouldn’t I be? There’s so much beauty and sexiness in this world it deserves to be admired. Come to E11even Miami and you’ll get just that.

Sometimes it’s nice to slow down and really enjoy the moment.

For The Weekenders: Nepal by Motorbike, Wine Tasting in Argentina, Meditation in Portugal…

It’s getting to be that time of the year where…well, a fucking holiday is long overdue. I know – New Year’s was no more than a month ago *shrugs* what can I say? With plans for Europe already in place, just thought I’d share with you all some other great places to check out. Enjoy, and remember, life’s too short to sit around going nowhere.

Which brings me to the first order of business – Nepal. By motorbike.

Why?

Because it’s something you probably haven’t done yet – but would be more than willing to try.

Think about it – cruising down the road, no speed limit, wind in your hair and sunglasses deflecting bugs (okay, maybe helmet), open land, culture, and nature as far as the eye can see. Just you, the road, and a few buddies. Nothing’s more freeing than the sound of that motor hum.

The bike? Royal Enfield Bullet. 500cc’s of unadulterated power – not too much, not too little…but just right for a trip like this.

royal enfield bullet motorcycle, For the Weekenders,Rego's Life Blog,Travel Rego's Life, For The Weekenders Nepal by Motorbike Wine Tasting in Argentina Meditation in Portugal, Cabanas No Rio, vacation ideas, holiday ideas

Get ready for 11 days chock full of checking out Nepal’s awesome scenery including its many jungles, plains, and insane heights – and of course what would a holiday be without (naturally) getting to know the locals and some of their favorite things to do…not to mention, you know, like…stay with them. What? You thought it was gonna be all isolated hotels on this trip? Guess again.

The rundown:

Grab a friend (or three), and book your tickets, plus the reservation for the trip. Touch down in Kathmandu with nothing but a carry on and your most rugged pair of boots (you’ll need them). Hopefully you’ve researched into the culture a bit and brushed up on the language – a little cultural respect can go a long way. Rest up well and get ready for the next day – take this time to get familiar with the area and practice a few lines on the locals – there’ll be a welcome dinner later and knowing a joke or two may help break the ice. Be sure to try every food passed your way – let’s not be picky, remember, you’re here to explore.

For the Weekenders,Rego's Life Blog,Travel Rego's Life, For The Weekenders Nepal by Motorbike Wine Tasting in Argentina Meditation in Portugal, Cabanas No Rio, vacation ideas, holiday ideas

From there it’s time to hit the road – there’s a lot on your travel plate:

No speed limits. Traffic-less streets in Bhaktapur.

Pigeon dinner and fresh mangoes (that you pick) for dessert while escaping the sun under a tree in Fattepur…speaking of, if you’ve been up trees picking mangoes, you probably stink – hit up the jungle for a fresh spring water shower.

Dessert before dinner – stuff your face with Momo dumplings in Bhetadar (they’re not your freezer variety) then eat dinner under the stars.

Learning how to make tea in Ilam…

…and 8 hour endurance rides.

You get the idea.

Like I said. Lot on your plate. Get ready. Rest well. Eat plenty. Nepal – it’s calling you – answer it.

Hopefully, all that motorbike action got you tuckered out…at this point, I personally would just wanna kick back and lounge all day. Argentina‘s the place to do it – but what trip to any Latin country would be complete without wine? Seriously…that’s like an elephant without a trunk.

So if you’re ready to come down off that adrenaline high, then it’s time to head to Mendoza. For villas, vineyards, and vino…so you can veni, vidi, vici.

First order of business: your accommodation. 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom villa? If you still wanna catch up on some work with your remote business early in the morning…or just enjoy sleeping alone…or just like a lot of space – I recommend 2 bedroom.

For the Weekenders,Rego's Life Blog,Travel Rego's Life, For The Weekenders Nepal by Motorbike Wine Tasting in Argentina Meditation in Portugal, The East Nepal Experience, The Himalayan, vacation ideas, holiday ideas

Think of this as your own home away from home. Treat it like your own home away from home. With waterfront and 1500 acre vineyard views, soaking tubs, rooftop terraces, and more than 2500 sq. ft. of living space, a place like this commands respect.

Besides waking up like royalty, the guys over at The Vines Resort and Spa are pretty intuitive when it comes to dining, too. They specialize in serving seasonal only dishes to all their guests – meaning the freshest taste you can find…and who can forget Argentinian beef? There’s just some things no matter how much your exercise that are like kryptonite to Superman…a good steak is one of mine.

If you’re not much of a red meat enthusiast that’s okay – they also serve other delicious alternatives like grilled salmon, pork (for you pork lovers) and even grilled fruit…a personal favorite of mine.

For the Weekenders,Rego's Life Blog,Travel Rego's Life, For The Weekenders Nepal by Motorbike Wine Tasting in Argentina Meditation in Portugal, The East Nepal Experience, The Himalayan, vacation ideas, holiday ideas

Hang on – don’t get the wrong idea here, this place isn’t all about relaxation – they’ve got some pretty fun activities that require you to get up and go, too. So in case you want to use more than the muscles in your arm to reach for that 3rd glass of wine, they’ve got you covered with excursions, fishing, climbing walls, bocce ball courts, and, of course, plenty of wine making activities. You know…to work those delts and lats.

For the Weekenders,Rego's Life Blog,Travel Rego's Life, For The Weekenders Nepal by Motorbike Wine Tasting in Argentina Meditation in Portugal, The East Nepal Experience, The Himalayan, vacation ideas, holiday ideas

Just remember – if you ever get sore from all that “heavy lifting,” you can always hit up their spa.

…but hold up – what if you don’t want all that? What if you don’t wanna socialize, don’t want noise, don’t want tours or “roughing it” – what if you don’t want any of that but instead just wanna get away from it all? Well then I’d say it’s time to take you back to (one) of my homelands…

Get ready for quality espresso, port wine, and bacalhau…’cause it’s next stop, Portugal.

For the Weekenders,Rego's Life Blog,Travel Rego's Life, For The Weekenders Nepal by Motorbike Wine Tasting in Argentina Meditation in Portugal, Cabanas No Rio, vacation ideas, holiday ideas

I remember my childhood days in Bermuda and teenage days of visiting family in Porto and Lisbon…we used to go out to the beach house and sunbathe, relax, lose track of time and just enjoy the stillness of everything. In retrospect, it was probably the best form of meditation I’d ever encountered and between traveling to both countries probably explains my refusal to live more than 10 minutes from the closest beach.

There’s a certain calmness the ocean offers to those looking for solace or time to reflect, empty, and get lost in their own thoughts. Just thinking about it makes me want to head to the beach now…but I’ve gotta finish this post. In the meantime, I want you to check out Cabanas No Rio, a (literally) small little getaway in Comporta, Portugal.

For the Weekenders,Rego's Life Blog,Travel Rego's Life, For The Weekenders Nepal by Motorbike Wine Tasting in Argentina Meditation in Portugal, Cabanas No Rio, vacation ideas, holiday ideas

There are two huts. Little huts. Fisherman huts…but don’t be fooled by these little huts. In each of these huts, are you living quarters. The first one? Your bedroom and bathroom, complete with shower. The second one? Your kitchen and living room. Quaint living room. Cute kitchen – decent for simple meals but small enough to not get too crazy.

For the Weekenders,Rego's Life Blog,Travel Rego's Life, For The Weekenders Nepal by Motorbike Wine Tasting in Argentina Meditation in Portugal, Cabanas No Rio, vacation ideas, holiday ideas

Loads of relaxing activities for when you feel the urge to venture out of your little hut. Take your pick from bird watching, dolphin watching, landscape observation and more. Me? I’d take dolphin watching. Good opportunity for photography and putting that macro lens to use.

If you get hungry, there’s no need to hunt down your own food – your accommodation is far away but not too far away from humanity – so hit up a restaurant if you don’t feel like cooking what you got from the grocer a few days back. So go out, grab some grub, have a few drinks, click some photos, head back, sit back, relax.

For the Weekenders,Rego's Life Blog,Travel Rego's Life, For The Weekenders Nepal by Motorbike Wine Tasting in Argentina Meditation in Portugal, Cabanas No Rio, vacation ideas, holiday ideas

Life really doesn’t have to be as hard as society makes it out to be. It starts with a thought…

As always…

Stay awesome.

For The Weekenders: Get Your Beer Fix With Healthy Beer…

This For The Weekenders I thought I’d tone things down a bit, keep it low key. While I’m constantly showing you guys great places to go and get booze, sometimes not everyone wants to spend $10 + on a single glass/bottle of alcohol. Plus I also wanted to share with you some great and healthiest beer out there that I personally drink in order to keep calories decent while still tasting great and keep the good times rolling. Like I always say, you can drink or eat anything, as long as it’s in moderation and with a bit of careful research.

So here’s a few of the healthiest beer you can bring along to or supply at the next big house party you’ve been getting stoked for. Enjoy.

healthiest beers, calories in beer, beer calories, guinness calories, rego's life, for the weekenders get your beer fix with healthy beer, regoslife, healthy beer, guinness draught, sierra nevada pale ale, modelo especial, best beers

If You’re Looking for a Good Buzz, Go with Guinness Extra Stout. It packs a bit more of a punch than it’s sibling beer Guinness Black Lager (4.5%) – and also helps colds. Whenever I feel a bit of something with my immune system coming on, I take one bottle of extra stout and mix it in a blender with a single raw egg, yolk included. Blend that puppy until frothy and smooth then down the hatch.

healthiest beers, calories in beer, beer calories, guinness calories, rego's life, for the weekenders get your beer fix with healthy beer, regoslife, healthy beer, guinness extra stout, heineken, new castle, guinness black lager

The taste is robust and strong, some say it’s bitter but I don’t really think so. It’s one of those beers you can drink down without having had too much on your stomach and it’ll actually fill you up. Great in the winter but not really recommended for the summer, you can’t lose with this one and don’t have to worry about it getting you sick (not calling any names here but…the perp that does begins with a “K.”). To top it all off it comes in at 6% – so if you’re alcohol tolerance has far exceeded numbers 4% and under or you just don’t wanna feel like you’re drinking carbonated water, this one’s for you.

If you really are focused on “calories” though by all means check out Guinness Black Lager, it’s a great alternative and has a smoother taste. For an even lighter beer, but in my opinion even less taste, shoot for Guinness Draught.

healthiest beers, calories in beer, beer calories, guinness calories, rego's life, for the weekenders get your beer fix with healthy beer, regoslife, healthy beer, guinness extra stout, heineken, new castle, guinness black lager

If You Want Something Light and Refreshing, Go With Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. This stuff is awesome. There was a time in my life when I lived in the country, and in that place there was a pizza joint. Not just any pizza joint – an amazing joint. A mom and pop, carry-out only pizza place where the ingredients were all natural with a MASSIVE array of toppings. Some of which I’ve only been able to find since then on Pizza Rustica‘s menu.

They also sold beer, which was awesome for a pizza place, and made it interesting by letting you create your own pick & mix 6-pack. This is where I discovered Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and haven’t looked back since. Citrusy aroma, surprisingly bold flavor, incredible smoothness, and an unbelievable finish. One of the few pale ales I’d drink – which is saying something.

So-so on the calorie end, around 175 which is right up there with Guinness, but hey – if you want to drink beer to feel the buzz, better to have a beer that only requires a few bottles compared to 6 or 7 light beers. If not it kind of just defeats the term “in moderation.”

healthiest beers, calories in beer, beer calories, guinness calories, rego's life, for the weekenders get your beer fix with healthy beer, regoslife, healthy beer, guinness extra stout, sierra nevada, new castle, guinness black lager

Last Stop, Newcastle…As In, The Beer. If You’re Just Looking for Something Familiar, but Smooth. Newcastle Brown Ale is the way to go. Well known over in the UK but not really favored here, nevertheless this is still a favorite of mine whenever I’m looking for a sweet tasting brew. Easy on the calories and reasonably priced, even the carb count won me over when first trying this brown ale.

What I love about this beer is the aroma – a nice nutty and caramel with a hint of coffee smell. Light carbonation, and still strong enough to feel the buzz coming on. Goes great with light foods and your classic chicken wings if you’re into watching the game. An all around winner for whenever you’re out at the bar/pub or just having a few friends over.

healthiest beers, calories in beer, beer calories, guinness calories, rego's life, for the weekenders get your beer fix with healthy beer, regoslife, healthy beer, guinness extra stout, sierra nevada, new castle, guinness black lager

The best part about all three of these? Practically no hangover. You can really tell the quality of a beer when you have your fill of it the night prior and wake up the morning after – if your head feels like it’s got a mallet that’s been pounding it all night, it’s a sure bet the ingredients that the beer was made with were of cheaper quality.

Beer is a lot like life – it’s not about how you start – but how you finish. 😉

Stay awesome.

For The Weekenders: Korean Wings, Post Party Breakfast Clubs, Sunday Steaks & Whiskey

The weekend’s fast approaching and since I’ve been hitting the sauce less and less, it’s got me thinking more about food. Working out 5-6 days a week can make a person pretty hungry – and every once in a while, we all need a “cheat” meal. So this For The Weekenders I thought I’d change things up a bit and share some of my favorite cheat meals with you all. Enjoy.

for the weekenders, rego's life blog, regos life, lifestyle and entertainment, for the weekenders korean wings post, breakfast clubs, korean chicken wings, korean fried chicken, bonchon chicken, hunter & tails, the breakfast club stir it up, rego's life atlanta restaurants, dallas restaurants, chicago restaurants

In travelling, there’s one thing you learn….food is awesome….and abundant. After a while, the phrase “I don’t like [insert food/ingredient here]” becomes non-existent. Because you quickly realize that there are TONS of ways to make a meal. I’ll try almost any dish once.

One food in particular I fucking love is Korean. Tried it in a few parts of the world until I finally tried it in South Korea. Then I caved and got a cookbook (the only way I know how to cook..don’t judge). Word of advice – if you ever wind up in Seoul or Busan or anywhere in South Korea for that matter – definitely, definitely try their food. Don’t stick to Western places – you’re missing out on a lot.

Now that that’s out of the way, there is one place in particular I strongly suggest you check out for some decent “junk food.” Located both globally and in the states it’s one of those go to spots you’ve gotta try at least once. If you’re a fan of fried chicken (the most consumed item during the Superbowl among others), you’re in for a treat.

bonchon chicken, rego's life, dallas restaurants, for the weekenders, rego's life blog, regos life, lifestyle and entertainment, for the weekenders korean wings post party breakfast clubs sunday steaks, korean chicken wings, korean fried chicken,

Because BonChon chicken delivers when it comes to a classic favorite. What makes BonChon stand out from the rest? The founder made sure the fried chicken coming out of his kitchen had a unique and original flavor. So what do you do when you roll up to the counter and aren’t sure what to order? Allow me to assist:

bonchon chicken, rego's life, dallas restaurants, for the weekenders, rego's life blog, regos life, lifestyle and entertainment, for the weekenders korean wings post party breakfast clubs sunday steaks, korean chicken wings, korean fried chicken,1st Grab some friends. Then start with some Tteokboki – it’s pretty much rice and fish cakes that’ve been stir fried to perfection then slathered in a spicy korean sauce – and just a touch of mozzarella to top it all off. You’re not going to want to share this, so make sure you order enough. An order of Stella Artois is also a must.

2nd This is where it gets serious. Ironically, I’ve never been one for meat on the bone – but with BonChon I’m willing to make an exception. You’ve got three choices – wings, drumsticks, and strips. Go for the strips, or pick your own favorite. Then pick your size – as in, how much you want. It’s the weekend. You’re surrounded by hungry friends – friends you work out with, and probably eat just as much as you do. Grab the XL – you’ll thank me later. Then select a sauce – you can’t forget the sauce. Soy Garlic if you like it tangy, Hot if you’re a masochist. If you’re not in the mood for BonChon’s chicken (you crazy bastard), try out the Bulgogi. Pretty much a hot plate with ribeye beef marinated to perfection alongside some steaming veggies. You’re welcome.

3rd Don’t forget the sides and salads. I’m serious – don’t forget the salad – you need your micro-nutrients. Try out their seaweed salad and of course, not Korean dish would be complete without kimchee or daikon (pickled radish) – the latter comes complimentary anyway, though.

From there it’s just sitting back and savoring the explosion of flavors you’ve just encountered. Your taste buds will thank you and BonChon will officially be your new go-to spot for mouth watering wings.

bonchon chicken, rego's life, dallas restaurants, for the weekenders, rego's life blog, regos life, lifestyle and entertainment, for the weekenders korean wings post party breakfast clubs sunday steaks, korean chicken wings, korean fried chicken,

If you filled up on BonChon and then decided to hit the town to see what parties are going on, I can guarantee after drinks and hours of dancing you’re gonna work up an appetite again. If that’s not the case, the next place is still a great excuse to carry on conversation if you’ve met someone “interesting” and don’t want the night to end just yet.

Skip the fast food chains for late night breakfast – there’s no dignity or class in going there – instead become a part of The Breakfast Club at Stir It Up Midtown.

for the weekenders, rego's life blog, regos life, lifestyle and entertainment, for the weekenders korean wings post party breakfast clubs sunday steaks, the breakfast club stir it up, rego's life atlanta restaurants

Even if wings and waffles aren’t your thing or you already had your fill of chicken for the weekend, they’ve still got other great selections like Spiced Shrimp with Coconut Grits, Callaloo & Saltfish, and more. Plain and simple, The Breakfast Club over at Stir It Up is unique because it’s only server Saturday and Sunday mornings during the wee hours – 2 AM to 5 AM.

Personally, I like the spiced shrimp with coconut grits – it’s warm, it’s filling, it sticks to your ribs. If you and your friends or that certain someone still wanna ride the buzz but get some food to absorb the alcohol, make sure you get there before 3 AM while they’re still serving alcohol. If you just wanna prevent having to nurse a hangover the next morning, it’s fresh squeeze breakfast beverages between 3-5. To top it all off, breakfast isn’t the only thing they serve…

Stir it Up also has an excellent regular menu that’s a mix between home style dishes with restaurant appeal. It’s a midtown Caribbean place that knows all about what the stomach wants, even when you yourself aren’t sure. Even with late night eating, you shouldn’t settle for less. Georgia never seizes to amaze me.

for the weekenders, rego's life blog, regos life, lifestyle and entertainment, for the weekenders korean wings post party breakfast clubs sunday steaks, the breakfast club stir it up, rego's life atlanta restaurants

Now for the real cream of the crop. It’s Sunday. You’re all partied out, and going through that weekly “detox” phase. Water, vitamins, fruit smoothies (don’t judge), cardio, you know the drill…but at the same time, you’re getting the “itch” to finish off the whole thing with a bit of a bang. By yourself, with friends, or a date, it doesn’t matter. you just want something magnificent before you get back to eating clean the rest of the week, and goddammit you want steak.

Cue Hunter & Tails. Your one stop spot for steak and bourbon….and I’m not talking about your typical, what-the-fuck-is-in-this-thing steak either. I recommend Hunter & Tails because it’s the perfect cheat meal – for starters, they buy from farms that believe in real food – not hormone pumped or GMO infested steroid type foods.

for the weekenders, rego's life blog, regos life, lifestyle and entertainment, for the weekenders korean wings post party breakfast clubs sunday steaks, hunter & tails, rego's life chicago restaurants

So when you sit down and order their 21 Days Aged Grass Fed Steak, you can rest assured you’re getting steak – and not an unhealthy combo of chocolate bars and potato chips with a little bit of meat (seriously, the mass majority of beef is fed with that).

If you’re not a fan of red meat they’ve been clever enough to come up with a vegetarian alternative as well, but I do urge you to try the Bang Mussels as a starter at least. Might as well add a decent wine to the mix, too – Steltzner Claret should get the job done…but don’t leave without first trying their Old Fashioned – can’t go wrong there. Head home, wind down with some mellow music and toast to a weekend well played.

Life’s all about experiences – one of those experiences is food.

As always…

Stay awesome.

This little dude finally hit puberty.

…..Did I grab your attention? Good – because this For The Weekenders has a bit of something for everyone. A real pick and mix.

With the Christmas holiday fast approaching, practically everywhere you go now stores are filled with holiday cheer – literally. To the brim. Christmas music blasts from every speaker known to man, and I feel sorry for the poor guy who works in retail and has to listen to holiday music for 8 hours straight. It kills the spirit in the song. Sometimes, it’s just plain healthy to switch it up.

Lately, in particular this year I’ve really been into Smooth Jazz Christmas radio on Pandora (side note – Funk Jazz is also a pretty great station, too). So this got me thinking about Jazz spots…which got me thinking about sharing one spot in particular – Analogue.

for the weekenders analogue is back travel proof clothing batman's gotham city never had this, rego's life, rego's life blog, regos life, rego, for the weekenders, weekend activities, analogue nyc,

This sexy, sultry spot in NYC is low key, and contrary to most assumptions, holds a friendly, warm atmosphere compared to many places that have the aesthetics down but no real heart…and speaking of heart, they’ve got some great drinks that’ll be sure to warm you through this winter season.

The play? First, sign up for their mailing list – it’ll keep you posted on all the latest and greatest. Second, head down there with a few friends that have developed an appreciation for quality sounds and of course, enjoy jazz. If you’ve got a special someone, even better – make it your business they cuddle up to you in one of Analogue’s ultra soft leather chairs and prepare for mellow sounds with even mellower drinks.

I recommend the New Yorker – Bourbon shaken with lemon juice, simple syrup served on the rocks with (wait for it) a float of dry red wine, and orange garnish. Really like the place and want to bring a bigger crowd? Ask about renting out a spot and they’ll be happy to oblige – Analogue is one of those places where the music is great, but also just loud enough to avoid shouting over the music and making an arse of yourself.

Which reminds me – sports bars (did that correlation come out wrong? Anyway) – Christ knows in the states there are enough sports bars to satisfy any sports enthusiasts…but rare is it to find a sports bar with sophistication.

I won’t lie – because of this reason I’ve never really been a fan of sports bars…actually I’ve never been a fan of sitting and watching sports (15 minutes in I feel compelled to get up and go play the sport)…but with a place like FC Gotham on the scene, opinions are bound to change. …and you know, the replacement of the word “bar” with “lounge” plus a touch of making the place feel like it’s that den you always dreamed of. Either way, FC Gotham supplies and delivers. I recommend that back room – the closest thing to watching a game live is watching it on a 70″ TV (though 100″+ is even better – that’s another story though).

While their website is still in progress, Yelp supplies all the need to know details. What makes this place so special? Well, a lot of reasons, actually. For one, any place that serves up lamb burgers and grilled chicken subs to go along with your drink gets an A+ in my book. There’s drinking and watching the game – then there’s drinking, watching the game, and eating epic food that can’t be defined as “bar bites”.

Think of it as the secret spot only you and your buddies know about when half the U.S. is getting ready to go out and watch all the major games. To the bat cave, Robin.

While we’re on the subject of secrets – it’s no secret that this is also the time of year for holidays (vacations) and traveling…but aside from the discussing the joys and that feeling of touching down in a previously visited place that feels new but familiar all at once, let’s talk about the gritty side of traveling – jet lag, wrinkled/sweaty shirts, and airlines that lack those little toothbrushes for 4+ hour flights (seriously, KLM).

More on that last one later. While two out of these three things may be inevitable, there is one the guys over at Parker Dusseau have been battling, and doing quite a good job at, to say the least.

Going out there and dressing well while still getting yourself into some adventure is no easy task at times. It’s moments like these you need proper threads that keep you feeling cool and collected, ready to tackle anything – from heavy checked baggage to a rented motorbike or super sexy automobile.

The guys at Parker Dusseau realized this, and have decided it’s time to take action. Think active lifestyle meets quality dress. Though their starting line is small, it’s all about quality over quantity and with selections like the casual chino revamped and suiting up being redefined, I’d say they’re doing it right.

Head over to their shop now and see all they offer. Keeping things casual never looked so good.

Stay awesome.

For The Weekenders: Thanksgiving, Rego Style…

What’s Better Than Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving. Rego Style.

I won’t lie – if you’ve traveled as much as I have, you embrace all holidays – and forget about nearly two-thirds of them…and then other times, make your own twist on them.

thanksgiving 2013, thanksgiving day, happy thanksgiving, rego's life, for the weekenders thanksgiving rego style

Most of the time I don’t celebrate them for their intended reasons – mostly because their intended reasons are historical events skewed….but that’s another story. Right now it’s all about good times with family, friends, food, and that favorite bottle of alcohol. So here’s a little insight into Thanksgiving – Rego style.

To start off – I never have been a fan of turkey – I don’t know if it’s the tryptophan or maybe the combination of foods that makes me sick, but I showed turkey the road about 7 years ago and haven’t looked back since. My (not so) new love…?

Duck.

thanksgiving 2013, thanksgiving day, happy thanksgiving, rego's life, for the weekenders thanksgiving rego style

Which means I’ve been pissing off this guy for a while now.

…but hear me out – duck is as tasty as it is, well, cute…and there’s so many ways you can make it. Or eat it. My personal favorites are duck bacon, duck sausage, and duck breasts. So who can I depend on when I’m getting a craving for one (or all) of the three? D’Artagnan, of course.

They’ve got top quality, carefully selected meat & game, and if you’re not one to skimp on freshness – they’re your go-to guys. The way I sometimes like to start my Thanksgiving day is with Duck Bacon Wrapped Scallops – because really, the only thing better than (turkey) bacon is duck bacon…but always make sure to leave room for the main dish – and alcohol. Quality alcohol. So in what way shape or form does duck beat turkey on this day of mindless calorie indulging? Duck Breasts with Black Olives and Port Wine. Yeah – I get back to my Portuguese roots every now and then.

thanksgiving 2013, thanksgiving day, happy thanksgiving, rego's life, for the weekenders thanksgiving rego style

When it comes to the wine – you’re on your own….I’m not sharing.

Since we’re on the subject of seasonal things like holidays and all, I figure why not introduce you guys to a seasonal bar. Hey – you’re eating all that food, you’ve gotta wash it down somehow. Even if it is like, the day after. Anyway, so get this – there’s a seasonal liquor bar at 58th and 9th in New York, and the minute you walk in it feels like something out of your own living room – providing you have good taste.

thanksgiving 2013, thanksgiving day, happy thanksgiving, rego's life, for the weekenders thanksgiving rego style, henry a liquor bar nyc

…also providing you have a leather chair with built in lights.

Maybe you’re not one for their furniture, even if you aren’t, you’ll be sure to love their drinks….and man do they have DRINKS. Take your pick from 6 different menus – enough to satisfy even the most diverse (or picky) alcohol enthusiasts. My favorites? Glad you asked…

Cocktail: Deadly Night Shade -It’s healthy, because there’s veggies in it. Seriously. Or so I tell myself. Roasted aubergine (that’s eggplant, for you Americans), Bacardi 8yr aged rum, lillet blanc, vanilla demerara add a touch of lemon and voila – an in-between meals snack. Just kidding (not really).

Beer: Ommegang Witte – Great with that appetizer wrapped in (more) duck bacon but lemony enough for barbecue or any other tangy dish you’re served up.

By The Bottle: Dom Pérignon Rosé – I had to…I just, had to. Starts out light, ends robust. If beer treated me this nicely every time I drank it – I’d drink alcohol for sport.

If you’re about 5 drinks in and you start seeing chairs on ceilings, you’re not drunk – the guys at Henry’s just like having a good laugh at the customer’s expense…and so do I.

They have rules, of which I couldn’t help but showcase below – numbers 2, 3, and 9 are absolutely imperative. In my opinion, if every bar had these rules – nights out would be a lot more fun…that and, if they allowed legit absinthe into the states (come on, just this once).

Henry rules

  1. Drink with an open mind. If in doubt, ask.
  2. Please refrain from using cell phones for anything other than texting, photographing our beautiful drinks, or your beautiful friends (keep the flash off – it’ll look much better).
  3. Make love, not war: no jägar bombs or cosmos.
  4. Please don’t bring anyone you wouldn’t bring home for dinner with your mother.
  5. Guys, play nice, don’t sleaze on our female patrons. Most are just here for a great drink.
  6. Drug use will not be tolerated. Rehabilitation will be recommended.
  7. In keeping with our goal of promoting temperance, we will refuse service to patrons who may have accidentally had one too many.
  8. No fighting, no name-dropping, no shenanigans. Horseplay is acceptable.
  9. Our dress code? Preserve the sexy.

thanksgiving 2013, thanksgiving day, happy thanksgiving, rego's life, for the weekenders thanksgiving rego style, henry a liquor bar nyc

Sometimes, rules can be pretty awesome…and with live jazz, you can’t go wrong. Henry, a Liquor Bar – check it out.

I don’t know why but I’m in a New York state of mind (see what I did there? Yeah.) and you’re gonna stick around to ask why…and when you do ask why and I point to the skies, I haven’t fallen off the wagon – I just like heights…and you should too, if you’re going to this next lounge – as in, cocktail lounge. Venue? The Skylark. Something off of Star Trek? No, and if you suggest something like that again I’ll slap you.

Kidding (maybe). Anyway, either make sure you go on Friday or prepare to book the place for the weekend (weekends it’s private events only), and if your friends are afraid of heights now’s a time to help them conquer that fear – or if you’re with a date now’s the time to “keep them close” for the sake of, you know, “safety”. Yeah – the ceiling to floor glass just can’t be trusted…better to just stay close.

thanksgiving 2013, thanksgiving day, happy thanksgiving, rego's life, for the weekenders thanksgiving rego style, the skylark nyc

You’ve gotta love the view though..and the fact their narcissistic enough to name a drink after themselves – which somehow represents the class, quality, and atmosphere of this place. So if you’re looking to impress now’s the time to study their menu so you look extra confident when ordering drinks and want your knowledge of alcohol to seem effing magical. What is The Skylark made of, you ask? Hendrick’s gin, Zu vodka, St. Germain liqueur, Blue Curucao, fresh lemon, and to top it all off a brandied cherry. Just think Casino Royale and that’s how about half of their drinks are.

Remember when I said I was in a New York state of mind? Yeah that wasn’t a lie. I think you should be too – fortunately, The Skylark has a drink that helps with just that. Offering hints of fruitiness and spice, “New York State of Mind” is made up of pama pomegranate liqueur, ginger beer, laird’s bonded apple brandy, fresh lime, and a thin wedge of hudson valley apple. Order. Sit Back. Sip. Enjoy View. Repeat.

So eat, be merry, and milk that Thanksgiving Buzz like it’s 1983. Minus the bad sweaters.

As always…

Stay awesome. 😉

For The Weekenders: Welcome to The 305.

I’m feeling…beachy…and a touch flighty. Time to show you some local favorites and a newcomer to the list of the best places to go this weekend.

baru urbano, for the weekenders, welcome to the 305, weekend activities, south florida night life, miami night life, 305 night life

Whether you’re near SoFlo, directly in Miami or not, take note of these places, as they’re something you don’t wanna pass up. Enjoy, and welcome to the 305.

Let’s sort out the flighty bit – ever just wanted to fly round the city but already done it in a helicopter? Yeah…we’ve all been there. Even if you haven’t, I highly recommend checking out Overseas Aero Tours, a Florida Keys Biplane Tour that’s (conveniently) suited for two.

for the weekenders, welcome to the 305, weekend activities,305 activities, overseas aero tours, florida keys activities, rego's life

Think Top Gun…for dates

…and an older plane. Like, 73 years old. War time era. If you’re gonna be flying in anything that old, let it be the Waco UPF-7. Yeah – shit just got real. It seriously beats a movie. Or dinner. Or drinks. Any day. So instead of doing the same old same old and sitting picking from a boring menu, how about get out of the A/C and hit the skies instead. It’s refreshing. It’s new. It’s partially original….and the best part is, they break down the pricing so it’s affordable, too.

Don’t just think this is for the single dating world – if you’ve managed to be hunted and captured (…married.) it’s a great activity to add to the list of “new things I did with my spouse.” If you’re into that. Go for a run across the sky and check out Pigeon Key, or get a little more adventurous and spend more time overlooking the epic sights of Sombrero Light. Pick a day where the weather’s fine and make reservations, right around this time of the year they can get pretty busy. 1940’s style aviators and pilot caps encouraged…add the jacket if you’re feeling particularly “authentic.”

…but let’s say you wanna go for drinks after a long afternoon of flying – well, I know just the place to wind down…recently opened if you’re into things like Colombian food, drinks, and nightlife, then you’ll wanna check out Barú Urbano…it’s like, the go-to for all things aesthetic and, well Colombian.

baru urbano, for the weekenders, welcome to the 305, weekend activities, south florida night life, miami night life, 305 night life

Now with three locations in Doral, Miami, and MidTown, there’s no excuse why you can’t check this place out. I highly recommend booking reservations, whether you’re going there with a date or just casually with friends. The place has various events depending on which bar you decide to hit up (check out Double Cross Thursdays tonight if you can make it), and a menu that’ll leave you coming back for more. If you’ve been hitting up the gym a lot lately I recommend the Barru Parilla – if you weren’t getting your protein before, you will with that dish.

Don’t forget to wash it all down with some quality spirits, and if you feel like being adventurous order up some refajo for a history lesson with your date, or one big toast with your best buds – as for exactly what refajo is well, I’d love to tell you but for now – I’ll let you figure out what it is when you get there (hint: it has to do with beer) 😉

baru urbano, for the weekenders, welcome to the 305, weekend activities, south florida night life, miami night life, 305 night life

Alright last stop…but listen – we’re heading north this time. More specifically, Ft. Lauderdale. I know – “Broward county? Wtf Why?” you’re probably asking…and I know, it’s not even remotely close to Miami – but hear me out, it’s not that bad actually. Besides – would I ever send you anywhere bad? Of course not – after all, I’ve got my reputation to uphold.

Besides it’s right by the beach – and if you’ve ever been to Ft. Lauderdale, the beach there is their strong point.

That and Hooters.

Hooters by the water is just…grand.

Can’t beat a good wing.

But when you want something a little less shady than Hooters, and wanna grab a bite to eat in your swimwear, have a go at Atlantic Surf Club.

ft. lauderdale activities, atlantic surf club, rego's life, for the weekenders, welcome to the 305, weekend activities, south florida night life

While my favorite thing about this place is the insane view you get while eating…the menu really takes the cake – pun intended. With selections like massive tuna steak burgers, Chicago Dogs, and mouth watering Snapper Filet, you have every right to stuff your face and feel guiltless after.

ft. lauderdale activities, atlantic surf club, rego's life, for the weekenders, welcome to the 305, weekend activities, south florida night life

For dessert, it’s a good idea to load up on their “Adult” shakes & floats – think TGIF but waaaay better service and a wider selection. It’s a nice change up from your standard alcoholic beverage (though I do recommend the Snake Bite), too. While my favorites pretty much consist of above and beyond 50% of the 9 flavors they have, you absolutely cannot afford to pass up these:

  1. Root Beer Float – Fueling my love of bourbon even more, this shakes blends vanilla ice cream, root beer, and bourbon all into one sinfully delicious combo that’s awesome for Root Beer lovers like myself.
  2. Malted Milkshake – What can I say? I’m a fan of the classics…and this is a classic with a twist. Vanilla ice cream, Ovaltine classic malt, amaretto, kahlua, frangelico, and toasted almonds – I’ll take two.
  3. Adult Mudslide – Reminds me of a favorite flavor of mine from Ben & Jerry’s ice cream lineup, Dublin Mudslide. Comes with a swirl of vanilla & chocolate ice cream, Bailey’s and Godiva chocolate, and of course, vodka.

Milkshakes never looked so good.

As always…

Stay Awesome.
