For The Weekenders: Top 3 Mother’s Day Gift Ideas – Rego Style…

It’s that time of the year again….Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and many of you are still probably trying to figure out the best gifts to get for your mums (obviously), wives, and mother-in-laws. Let me give you some sound advice from experience – if you’re thinking of flowers and chocolates – don’t. You’d only be begging for a slap. It’s time to get original.

Time to think outside the box.

Which is why I’m here to help you.

Pay attention, yeah? This is gonna go quick.

For The Weekenders: Top 3 Mother’s Day Gift Ideas – Rego Style…

Let’s start with the most important…your own mum.

By now, unless you’re a teenager reading this well, you’re mum – she’s pretty up there. In age that is. So you wanna get her something special…and I don’t mean something she can get at discount during Senior Citizen Sundays, either.

She’s a special lady – so you’ve gotta get her a special gift. Something timeless, something that breathes emotion – something that she’ll still use or talk about (in a good way) five years from now. After all – she housed you rent free for 9 months, changed her diet completely to absurd tastes, and went through ungodly things a female human being experiences that are only mentioned in hushed whispers. So…*shrugs* she’s kind of a big deal.

I had a very big head.

So you kind of wanna get her a big gift. I don’t mean in the literal size sense – but something that really has a sparkle and a bang to it. Something that says “I’m sorry for those times you wanted to pull your hair out with me, but look what a great functioning adult your kid turned out to be!”

That’s what mum’s wanna hear.

At least you’d hope they do.

Which is why if anything, you’ll want to get her and Eternity Circle Necklace – with an epic quote card.

Nothing says “thanks” like quoting George Washington – apparently, that man really knew his shit when it came to charming family members.

The necklace is handmade to order, and comprised entirely of sterling silver, but they also have gold if she’s more into the yellow stuff. Pair it with a gift tag that says “with love,” and a wise-crack card chock-full of humour, and you’ve got yourself one hell of a Mothers Day gift idea. If this isn’t a great way to say “thanks” to her for all she’s done well – I don’t know what is.

Present it to her during Mother’s Day Dinner gathering at that one fine restaurant you picked, and prepare to be showered with embarrassing hugs and kisses.

(If single, be prepared to be showered with attractive waitresses/waiters that think you’re just the sweetest thing ever for doing all that for your mother. Have that dialing finger ready – phone numbers will be abundant.)

In saying that – like yours, other people’s mums want to be appreciated, too.

If you’re married, the general assumption is you’ve got a mother-in-law.

You may love her, you may hate her, you may want to give her the best gift ever, or possibly throw darts at her…but dammit man/woman, if there’s one thing that’ll score you huge brownie points with the missus/mister, it’s remembering to get a gift for THEIR mom too.

So the best move here is to be thoughtful, but practical. You wanna shoot for a gift that’s functional, not classic hum-drum, and most of all useful. What could be something that’s useful? Well think about it….

For the most part, parents get old. And I mean like…..OLD (too much?). Which is why you should help them in every way possible to make their day to day lives easier – they did it for you kids – time to return the favor, wouldn’t you say?

One big factor of getting older can be misplacing things.

Car keys.

Phone.

Glasses (my mum’s fucking famous for this – like a modern day Velma from Scooby Doo).

Children.

…joke on that last one.

So wouldn’t it make it easier if you could like, call out to things and they just answer you?

Yeah.

I thought so too.

Which is why I recommend getting the Kensington Proximo.

With this baby, you’ll never again have to be distracted from an intimate moment with your S.O. due to his/her mother ringing saying she needs help with something then turning that inquiry into an hour long gossip session.

Proximo keeps track of your phone and up to four other items with the “tags” provided, so long as you can attach said tags to the things you wanna keep track of.

So if mother-in-law “accidentally forgets” her purse, keys, phone, or any other conceivable thing, she’ll be alerted via her smartphone with a soft alarm that triggers the minute the tag is too far away.

It’s a really beneficial gift for the mother-in-laws that you actually like, too, as this means they’ll spend a lot less of their day trying to track down their phone from the coffee shop they left it behind at while catching up with their friends, and a lot more of their day on more important things – like enjoying their lives.

Now it all boils down to the wife. Dangerous territory here…but with enough thought, you’ll be sure to get the perfect gift for her.

You always wanna think carefully when getting a gift for the woman who bore your children. It’s like stepping into a mine field – be too conventional and you’ll get the disappointed look, fake smile, and shitty reciprocal gift come Father’s Day. Step outside the box too much and you’ll get a slap and that highly inappropriate card with those tacky lingerie selections thrown in your face.

Yep, it boils down to some real Sun Tzu’s Art of War type shiz.

I’ll give you a word of advice – think safe, and classy.

…and safe and classy is what you’ll get with a Michael Kors Slim Silver Case Runway Bracelet Watch.

If it’s one thing your wife’s learned to be, it’s time-management savvy. Between the kids, dinner, housework, and even their own jobs, they’re constantly multi-tasking making sure the ship they run is in, well…ship-shape. I don’t know how the fuck they do it – but all I’ve gotta say is bravo, and keep up the good work…because God knows humanity would be lost without you.

This Michael Kors watch not only helps your lovely lady keep track of little Timmy’s soccer game at 4 or keeping track of that pot roast so the house doesn’t go up in flames, but also adds elegance and grace to both of those activities.

It’ll show you put real thought into a gift because it’s a piece that’s timeless, unique, and versatile – meaning it can be worn by her in a casual and classy environment. Water resistant to 5 ATM and stainless steel, the Michael Kors Slim Silver Case Runway Bracelet Watch can take the everyday abuse of a dedicated mother, while still having her look like she takes care of herself first.

All in all, it’s a great way to let her know that you appreciate her, and always have – even after many years passed.

For The Weekenders: Books and Booze, Indoor Skydiving, FootGolf…

This weekend is all about one thing – getting out there and actively having fun…and don’t let the title fool you. Embracing literature can be fun – especially when there’s beer. Enjoy.

For The Weekenders: Books & Booze, Indoor Skydiving, FootGolf…

For The Weekenders Books and Booze Indoor Skydiving FootGolf, Rego's Life For The Weekenders Books and Booze Indoor Skydiving FootGolf, For The Weekenders Books and Booze Indoor Skydiving FootGolf Rego's Life, Rego's Life, iFly Dallas, FootGolf, The Wild Detectives, Indoor Skydiving, Skydiving, dallas activities, Rego's Life For The Weekenders, For The Weekenders Rego's Life

The lineup this week is pretty special. This weekend is all about spreading yourself amongst family, friends, and lovers…or, if you prefer it, just telling everyone to fudge off and getting lost in some of Oscar Wilde’s writings.

You get the idea.

So what would be the most appropriate way to kick things off? Well, pardon the pun but “kicking” is the first thing you’ll be doing. Except on a golf course. And no…we don’t mean your caddy who ill-advised you on that shot over at the 8th hole that was a Par 4, guaranteeing it’d “be an easy eagle.”

Golf just went and got hybrid with things. What I mean to say is, if golf and football (soccer) went and had a baby, they would name it this sport: FootGolf.

The concept is fairly (pun not intended this time) simple. You get a few friends together, and make sure you’ve got the right kit – this means ditch the shin guards, and bring along a smoking pipe or two and a nice golfing cap – you wanna keep things classic. They do it up proper with an attire list.

Book a tea time, but don’t sweat it if it isn’t at some ungodly hour in the morning – when it comes to FootGolf over at Lake Park they make sure you can play as late as you want…in fact, when it comes to weekends it’s anytime after 4. So yeah, this is one time you can banter with your grandpa about how “the early bird gets the best worm” and tell him to shove it.

For those of you who haven’t ever heard of FootGolf, the game is played almost exactly like regular golf – only with a football. Water hazards, playing the ball from where it lands (whether behind a tree or not) and waiting your turn to play are all still required. The only difference is you have no golf club to wrap around the nearest tree in the event a water hazard does happen.

If you find a way to wrap the football around a tree though…call me.

The best part about FootGolf? Next time you’re out at a lounge sitting around with your friends and bragging about how you got that hole-in-one on a par 3, it’ll actually get some attention – once you mention how it was all done with a football.

Let that sink in for a minute.

Then proceed to leveling up in awesomeness.

Barney Stinson would approve.

This next one’s for the family. You know, for those times when everyone decides it’s time to have a random reunion and it just gets more awkward by the minute. The questions of marriage. When you’re gonna “settle down.” What ever happened to that person who you dated briefly during your excursion in Asia. Whether or not you finally got a “real job.”

All that can be avoided by heading over to iFly and watching somebody’s dentures fly out of their mouth (I promise this isn’t directed at any specific old person…somehow this just seems to be my trend of thought in writing right now).

What is this iFly I speak of you ask…? Oh nothing too special – except for indoor skydiving.

iFly has great packages – for first time flyers and experienced ones alike. So bring 5 of you most (or least) liked family members and prepare to watch them as they pushed and suspended into the air with wind gust of over 150 mph+. Get the family package and you can get 10 flights or 5 double flights, plus a video of the whole thing.

There’s just something funny about seeing someone’s facial skin flap in the wind.

Best part is you get to experience all the thrills of skydiving without the risk of jumping out of a plane and…you know…like…dying.

Plus this is one time you can have a legitimate excuse to act as on of your favorite super heroes. I vote Iron Man. Superman’s cool but…tights? No thanks.

Now what if I told you after all that excitement, you could call it a day, curl up with a book and your at-the-moment favorite sweetheart, and enjoy a nice cold beer.

No, they didn’t recently discover unicorns exist.

Yes, the concept of this being possible in a public environment is completely real…just head over to The Wild Detectives.

If Sherlock Holmes had a hangout spot, this would be it.

To describe what The Wild Detectives is interesting to say the least. It’s a bookstore. But it’s also a bar. They serve coffee…have wine tastings, and book readings. Simply put, it’s a place where you go to grow up without risking being boring. A place to fearlessly be intellectual without getting too serious.

Come to think of it if alcoholic beverages and comfy seating were offered at the library when I was in university, I probably would’ve been way more productive than I already was.

It just kind of follows the whole trend of write drunk, edit sober.

Just sayin’.

I mean there were pubs on practically every corner…why not just add one where students like going the least?

So this is the play – this is the place to invite that one special (translation: hot), intriguing (translation: smart) someone you’ve been trying to ask out for weeks…but couldn’t construct an intelligent sentence together whenever you’d try to ask.

Reasons they’ll like it: They get to exercise their brain and pour their thoughts out about the writing of Ralph Waldo Emerson and American Transcendentalism in a place that smells like…vintage.

Reasons you’ll like it: With just the help of a few words and reading cliff notes (joke), you’ll get to have an entire conversation created for you that’s easier to listen to with the aid of beer and wine, while having a perfectly good excuse to look at someone’s Aphrodite/Adonis-like face without seeming awkward but instead, highly attentive.

For The Weekenders: Breakfast, Sweets, and Sake…

This week’s been all about one thing for me: FOOD…and holy mother of Jesus…has it been good food. There’s three things you should never miss out on in life – a decent breakfast (your body will thank you), sweets that melt in your mouth (keeps you from turning into a bitter, callous person), and a bit of drink (always good for flushing your liver).

If not experiencing all three at least every week…well you’re just missing out on an important part of life. Let’s fix that void – starting now. Enjoy.

For The Weekenders: Breakfast, Sweets, and Sake…

For The Weekenders Breakfast Sweets and Sake, Rego's Life, Regoslife, Rego's Life For The Weekenders Breakfast Sweets and Sake, Rego's Life For The Weekenders Breakfast Sweets and Sake, Rego's Life For The Weekenders, For The Weekenders Rego's Life, Ani Japanese Restaurant, Ani Chicago, A Baker's Tale, A Baker's Tale Chicago, Plein Air Cafe, Plein Air Cafe & Eatery, Chicago Restaurants, food, lifestyle

Breakfast should be one of those things you appreciate and never miss out on…but that can be a tricky thing, more often than not for many people. If you’ve got a job or wake up early for your business, a lot of times breakfast can be neglected – which is a huge no-no. You deserve better. Your body deserves better. So head over to Plein Air Café and give your stomach what it needs (and wants).

If there’s ever a place that made a damn good breakfast, it’s Plein Air Café.

The presentation of the food is as awesome as the taste of the food itself. Conveniently located in the University of Chicago Hyde Park Campus, this is one place where you can, for lack of a better description, have that “European experience” with your breakfast…which coming from me (in being Portuguese and British) it’s really saying something (good job guys).

So this is the play, you’ve got two choices – either take your breakfast in the morning or…whenever you want really. All items on their menu are served all day – so if you missed that “11 o’ clock window” don’t sweat it – your Mascarpone Stuffed Brioche French Toast will be there waiting for you at 3.

Like a good drink, after a good meal it’s always great to have a nice chaser. So after you’ve had a great breakfast, satisfy your sweet tooth over at A Baker’s Tale – a great spot to take that one date you’ve been trying to impress for like…weeks now.

Don’t fudge it up.

Well. You can’t, really. At least not with this place.

The simplest way to describe A Baker’s Tale is to explain to you that it’s pretty much like walking into a story book. With “cute” little rhymes on their website and decor to back up the talk, this is the kind of place that surprisingly enough, girls will love and guys will think is pretty cool. Aesthetic enough to be pleasant and feminine, but neutral enough to feel like you didn’t step into Barbie’s playhouse (if not it just gets kind of…weird). The place is more Alice in Wonderland themed than anything – so that right there means be prepared for the “trippy” but cool.

Aside from the fact I’m into fitness, this is one of those spots where well…even I have my weaknesses. What can I say…the menu is cool, and great for those “cheat days.”

So if you end up heading here with one of those potential sweet summer flings that are “sugar conscious” – but forget the phrase even exist when they step inside a sweet shop (and they will with this one), this is your go-to spot. They don’t just do sweets either. You can take your pick from other items on their menu, like sandwiches, soups, and quiche. Let’s just not turn this into a Hansel and Gretel thing – contrary to popular belief, it’s never good to “fatten up” a date for the kill…if anything it just sounds creepy.

You got the breakfast buzz. You got the sugar high. Now I’d say it’s about time for that drink…so head on over to Ani – a fresh little Japanese restaurant over on North Lincoln Ave., open and ready to serve you not just great sake, but Karaage chicken (among other tasty menu items as well).

Like any true, authentic Japanese eatery, Ani understands this – when you drink, you want to enjoy that drink. Savor it. Experience it’s true flavor…and of course share it with close friends – and even closer “acquaintances.” There aren’t many places that remind me of my days in J-Land but, this is one of them – and for that, I’ve gotta say ありがとう.

So here’s my suggestion:

Swing by and check out the place, then book a table for you and your friends – pick a great view where you really get a chance to look around the place (plus check out the local “scenery”).

Step outside of your comfort zone and have a go at their best brews – besides sake there’s beer and many others, so don’t be shy.

Once you’re a bit oiled up, grab some of their noodles – if you leave here without trying the noodles well…you’re just dying for a slap.

If you’re looking to keep the liquor rolling, check out their sake mussels instead. Finish it off with a good bowl of miso, another round of sake, and once you’re stuffed don’t forget to mention ごちそうさまでした to the passing waiter/waitress. You’ll be thanked with a smile.

…and if you haven’t already – for God’s sake, add these places to your favorites under your smartphone’s GPS app.

As always…

Stay awesome.

I’m quite happy about this For The Weekenders. It’s like a Sound of Music moment for me – not saying that I enjoy musicals (cough). Just saying…it reminds me of childhood days and the fact that these are a few of my favorite things. Plus…I’m confident you’ll like it too. I mean really – and don’t let the ping pong battles fool you. They’re brutal. Let’s get started shall we…?

For The Weekenders Ping Pong Battles Winks and Whiskey Korean Tacos, Rego's Life For The Weekenders Ping Pong Battles Winks and Whiskey Korean Tacos, For The Weekenders Ping Pong Battles Winks and Whiskey Korean Tacos Rego's Life, Rego's Life, regoslife, Rego's Life For The Weekenders, For The Weekenders Rego's Life, Wink & Nod, Wink and Nod, InBoston, InBoston Korean Kitchen, Blazing Paddles, weekend activities, boston nightlife, boston restaurants

You take a step back…shift your weight onto your right foot. Wiggle your left hand a bit for balance, and feel a drip of sweat trickle down your brow. Eyes dilated, you place a firm grip on the paddle in your right hand…swing your arm back with elegance and…bingo – perfect play.

Ping pong just got a whole lot more fun. With DJs, drinking, and some post game dancing, hell, ping pongs gone and grown up. It just can’t get any better than Blazing Paddles. This is your go-to spot for when you’ve just completed exams, or have been studying the week through all for that Bachelor’s Degree in [insert subject here].

This is the place to go when you’re tired of conventional bars, with conventional pool tables, and slippery dance floors from all the beer spilt. This is for all those nights you spent wracking your brain on Pub Quiz but dammit, you realized you just aren’t that into pop culture.

This is the place where students, music and sports enthusiasts, and of course Ping Pong battlers, practically everyone can gather and come together on mutual ground and similar interests, and “groups” or “clicks” disappear.

Who am I kidding? Bostonians are chill like that anyway.

So this is the plan, you’ve got two major options – if you’re feeling low key, just slip into the establishment (conveniently located in Game On), head downstairs, and book your table – I reckon an hour or so should be good enough to work up a sweat (and thirst). If you’ve never tried Ping Pong before now would be a good time – just remember, it’s all in the wrist.

However if that doesn’t work out, you can always try out their batting cage – show of your strength. You know. That sort of thing.

As for that second option, if you wanna do it up big and hold a party, just ring Blazing Paddles up or fill out their form online – they’ll cater to your every need (all shy of helping your score with your date – you’re on your own with that one. Sorry.)

When you’ve finally had enough or just fancy a break, hit up the bar while checking out what’s on the menu – Ping Pong can be a hungry game…and if you really find you like the place, stick around a bit longer for a few more rounds until the DJ shows up – because really that’s when the fun begins. After that, it’s really all just Saturday Night Fever.

But let’s say you hit up Blazing Paddles early, and you’re not really feeling the Pepper Jack Cheeseburger (are you crazy? Why? It’s got avocado for Christ’s sake.), or your friends and you just feel like keeping the energy rolling by getting food first, then sporting later…or maybe even your friend from Seoul just touched down and wants a bit of fusion food (improbable? Think again). What then? Well, you say adieu and shuffle on over to InBoston.

Though you may remember another restaurant I wrote on similar to this one in an earlier post, I can assure you the most certainly are not the same. While they both serve Korean wings, InBoston gets interesting and servers up some pretty epic Korean Tacos as well…and I’m sorry but – tacos.

It’s the perfect spot for when you want something borderline “cheat meal,” borderline healthy. Yes, they have fries. Yes, they have chicken…they like to keep things simple on their menu – but with simplicity comes mastery, and mastery comes art. You do something long enough, especially with food, and you learn to make it distinct. Original. Flavorful.

Think of this place as your favorite take away spot. They don’t have a lot of chairs, and reasonably so – they’re in the financial district.

It makes them a little hard to find yeah, but if you know where Gene’s Flatbread Cafe is, you can find these guys. Just look across the street. The staff is friendly, and the food always fresh. Try the Bulgogi Taco – you can’t go wrong.Bottom line – if you like Mexican food, this is the place for you. If you like Korean food…this is the place for you. If you like both Mexican and Korean food and wish someone would combine the two – why are you still reading this? Get over there. NOW.

Stomach full and ping-ponged out, this is the last stop. You made it – now it’s time to just kick back and relax, while you melt into supple white leather chairs, sipping on a G&T to revive your spirits. If you don’t like gin, that’s okay – the bartenders here have a knack for making spectacular, noteworthy drinks. Ask for something with whiskey and prepare to be blown away. It’s called Wink & Nod for a reason, you know.

This is the place when you want to wind down from the noise of the batting cage, or the thrill of the game at your favorite bar. This is the place where, if you’ve had enough fun with your friends, you can split and pick up that person who gave you their number while you were in line at Starbuck’s last week…for a nice quiet drink. The atmosphere? Breathtaking.

…and I use that word very, very sparingly.

It’s the kind of place where you appreciate soft leather chairs, perfect lounge lighting, and interesting prints on furniture and floor. You can focus on conversation while keeping the palette smooth, and when you start feeling a little too warm and fuzzy, bring your buzz back down to maintainable levels with a few of their menu items. Try the Short Rib Yakitori – there’s no such thing as too much yakitori.

Oh, and when you’re really ready to get nice and cozy with that person you brought along? Head over to the seating opposite the bar.

For The Weekenders: Classic Cars, Little Bars, Pizza Hackers…

This For The Weekenders is all about one thing – kicking your Converse up on the table and enjoying life. No dress codes. No fancily dressed bouncers. No 35th floor city view. Nope. This weekend we’re talking novelty, nostalgia, and all things in between. Enjoy. 😉

For The Weekenders: Classic Cars, Little Bars, Pizza Hackers…

With the arrival of spring, fine weather calls for beach outings, picnics, and road trips. Nothing’s better than a clear blue sky with full, white clouds and the sun beaming down on you while just enough breeze makes it warm, not humid. Nothing beats hitting the highway with old tunes, close friends (or your S.O./new found spring fling), and somewhere good to go.

But sporting around in a Prius just won’t cut it. No, you need something real. Something respectable. Something unforgettable.

This is where DB Autosportif comes into play.

For those days when you just want to get away from it all and just enjoy the hum of an engine, good tunes, and the wind in your hair. What’s really cool about this company is they’re small, but take great pride in what they do. Run by a team of three, these guys decided to take their passion and turn it into something they could share with people everyday.

So here’s how it goes – you order up a car 24 hours in advance and have it delivered to wherever you want within the Bay Area of Northern California. Literally – anywhere. So if you thought about playing hooky at work tomorrow and want to pull a Ferris Bueller, you can.

“Oh Sloane, dear, hurry along now.”

Once you order the car it’s delivered to you the next day – the question is though, which car do you want? That depends really – whether you’re a fan of convertible or standard top….but if you picked convertible, I recommend an American classic, the 1960 Chevy Corvette Roadster – also known as “Eddie.”

bars, DB Autosportif, For the Weekenders, For The Weekenders Classic Cars Little Bars Pizza Hackers, For The Weekenders Classic Cars Little Bars Pizza Hackers Rego's Life, nightlife, oddjob san francisco, pizza, PizzaHacker, rego's life for the weekenders, Regos Life, san francisco weekend activities, weekend activities

There’s just some things in life that no matter how old they get, beat even the newest, most cutting edge inventions. This ’60 Corvette is one of them. It’s the perfect car for that day when you just want a little one on one time with someone that means something special to you.

I’ve always been more of a fan of standard top cars, but pieces of art like these have a tendency to change my mind and throw “preferences” out the window – because at the end of the day, it’s the fact that at some point in history, a group of people took science and art, and made something fucking beautiful…yet powerful. Take this car on one of the scenic drives DB Autosportif offers with a picnic basket (containing some choice wine) and you won’t be disappointed.

If you’re really more of a standard top fan though, don’t hesitate to try the 1965 Ferrari 330GT 2+2, aka “Enzo.” A four seater instead of a two, you can bring some friends along and make a day out of cruising around to different awesome places.

Or, you know, just cruise to the next private airport.

…so let’s say you skip the picnic for two and do decide to hit the town with friends instead? Couple things – you’ll want to start with a full stomach.

But I’m not talking about the nearest franchise restaurant…and God knows sitting in some air conditioned upscale restaurant wouldn’t exactly mesh with the kind of day you’re trying to create. Nope – remember, it’s all about casual clothes, comfortable shoes, and enjoying things most people take for granted.

So it’s gonna be first stop, PizzaHacker. Why? Because…

bars, DB Autosportif, For the Weekenders, For The Weekenders Classic Cars Little Bars Pizza Hackers, For The Weekenders Classic Cars Little Bars Pizza Hackers Rego's Life, nightlife, oddjob san francisco, pizza, PizzaHacker, rego's life for the weekenders, Regos Life, san francisco weekend activities, weekend activities

LOOK AT ALL THIS DELICIOUSNESS.

Seriously. There’s pizza. Then there’s wood burning oven baked pizza. Pies like this beat your standard franchise pizza any day. Care, energy, and emotion is put into everyone of these pizzas, because when someone’s passionate about what they like, that’s exactly what happens.

The guy Jeff who crafts these things is no cheapskate when it comes to ingredients either. He’s all about organic ingredients, “fancy” salts, choice toppings, and carefully crafted dough. I have ALWAYS been a fan of pizza, so whenever someone comes along and shares that same passion, I’ve no choice but to tip my hat to them and say “well done sir/madam.”

I admire this guy for what he does – how he started. Entrepreneurship at it’s best. So if you’re in SF be sure to check out his website and his food. You won’t regret it – but you will regret not doing so.

So you and a few friends have loaded up on pizza, checked out one of the great scenic drives recommended by DB Autosportif, and now you’re looking for someplace to rest your Ray-Bans and have a good drink.

But you don’t just want a standard beer. Naa, you want something different. That’s what this weekend is all about. So you all agree to hit up SRO, cleverly hidden in OddJob over on Mission St…and once you get there, you realize you couldn’t have made a better choice.

The place is similar to that of some Japanese bars I’ve been in. So small it’s not like your standard bars where you can sit back, lounge, and relax – but it’s that same smallness that adds intimacy on a great date or closeness with friends when you all feel like really bonding.

SRO stands for well, Standing Room Only, and rightfully so – it’s only got a few stools. So don’t expect to be all sprawled out – this is the kind of place you have to feel comfortable being close to strangers in, in order to truly enjoy it.

While the mixologist here will make you a drink on request, it’s best just to let these guys do their thing and use their imagination. After all, there are hundreds if not thousands of bars, lounges, and restaurants that you can go to and simply tell someone what drink you want. The treat at SRO is, these guys will mix something up for you, and see if it’s to your liking. Look for Joey, and he’ll be sure to take care of you.

One last thing, no plastic allowed here – cash only. Quit your whining though – you wanted the classic experience.

Plus, driving a 1960’s sports car while paying for everything with plastic is a little goofy to say the least.

As always…

Stay awesome.

For The Weekenders: Culinary School, Grilled Cheese, Miami Vice

Let’s be honest….sometimes your week can be rather….draining. By the time the weekend arrives you don’t always feel like going out for that drink with friends. Sometimes you just want to hide in your bat cave and not be bothered with any motherfucker.

Rego's Life, Rego's Life For The Weekenders, For The Weekenders Culinary School Grilled Cheese Miami Vice, Rego's Life For The Weekenders Culinary School Grilled Cheese Miami Vice, For The Weekenders, Shikany Culinar School, Daily Melt, Daily Melt The Ultimate Grilled Cheese, Regos Life, regoslife, i enjoy spending weekend nights reading someecards

Other times you just wanna get creative and have no set plans. This is one of those times.

Though this first one on the list isn’t something you can do on weekends, it’s worthy enough to include. Why? Because when you’ve finally come across that special someone that you choose to invite over your place for good music, fine wine, and a home cooked meal, the last thing you want is plopping a sodium filled TV dinner down in front of them.

Wouldn’t exactly be romantic.

Kinda kills the mood.

sorry for pretending i could cook someecards, Rego's Life, Rego's Life For The Weekenders, For The Weekenders Culinary School Grilled Cheese Miami Vice, Rego's Life For The Weekenders Culinary School Grilled Cheese Miami Vice, For The Weekenders, Shikany Culinar School, Daily Melt, Daily Melt The Ultimate Grilled Cheese, Regos Life, regoslife

So my suggestion is this: spare yourself the potential future embarrassment, and take up a proper culinary class.

As in, the type that actually teaches you how to cook something impressive. The guys over at Shikany wanted to make sure this aspect was taken care of, so they thought, “we’re bored – let’s start a cooking school.”

Quite enthusiastic, I know. (side note – I’m totally not guaranteeing that was what was said – but my wild guess is it very may well have been)

The classes are set to begin this summer 2014. I’m considering going just for the fun of it – so if you’re also thinking about it, you may very well run into me.

What really piqued my curiosity about this culinary course are the options provided. You can choose between savory and sweet (pastry) classes, both of which last 2 to 2.5 hours. Considering I’m the “cook book” style chef, I’d say that’s nice and intensive for a course that only runs 4-6 weeks, but manages to teach so much information. With enough practice, you’ll find yourself taking more time out to be in your kitchen and create.

i tried cooking with wine for the first time someecards, Rego's Life, Rego's Life For The Weekenders, For The Weekenders Culinary School Grilled Cheese Miami Vice, Rego's Life For The Weekenders Culinary School Grilled Cheese Miami Vice, For The Weekenders, Shikany Culinar School, Daily Melt, Daily Melt The Ultimate Grilled Cheese, Regos Life, regoslife

Classes are going to be every Tuesday and Wednesday, and at the end of the semester you get a nice gift (I won’t spoil it for you).

Oh and don’t be fooled – culinary schooling isn’t the only thing Shikany does. They also have a pretty epic menu and wine list. I highly suggest you check out their small plates Cognac Vanilla Waffles and Wahoo Crudo, “Beet is On Fire” for dessert, and your choice of wine from their extensive list.

So just in case you’d rather not try your hand at a romantic dinner for two at yours, they’ve still got you covered. No reservations here – but please, do dress well.

…however let’s just say you’re not trying to impress anybody – and all you really want is to stuff your face with an old fashioned favorite – something you never quite were able to grow out of since childhood (hint: not gummy bears).

Remember when mom used to make you a grilled cheese? Remember when you used to be outside and she used to call out to you to come in, and half the time you wouldn’t until she mentioned the words “grilled cheese” – to which you’d then proceed to bolt past her near breaking the hinges off the screen door?

Yeah. Now you get to relive the most important part of those memories – that one delicious sandwich you haven’t been able to kick the craving for, no matter how much you work out.

Daily Melt caters to this specific craving with a nice little twist – it’s not just about the cheese, butter, and bread anymore. They’ve taken grilled cheeses and turned them into art…which is pretty much like someone discovering unicorns, if they were even half as important.

Small but simple, their menu is comprised of some pretty kickass grilled cheese variations. Splitting them into categories, if you ever hit them up for breakfast, be sure to check out their Veggie Frittata if you’re not a pork fan, and Bacon Turkey Melt if you are.

Lunch wise? Check out the whole menu. Seriously. Just pick one month and allocate two “cheat meal” days every week, then go through the entire thing.

If you’re too lazy to do that though – I recommend the Chicken Pepper Jack Melt, White Truffle Butter, and Garden Melt. All at the same time, or separately. Throw in a nice side order of soup/salad, grab a good dessert, sweet tea and BOOM. You’re 8 years old and back home.

When you’re done stuffing your face, it’d be a good idea to turn your attention to something far more important, far more Miami.

At least 1980’s Miami. If you’ve been watching Archer Vice, used to be a fan of Miami Vice, and just like the sound of the word “Vice” in general, this one’s written especially for you.

So picture this – you’ve touched down in Miami and ended up staying at the Mayfair. You’re bored, as it’s your fifth time going to the 305, and you wanna try something different. Something unique. Something retro, for lack of a better word.

While you’re pouring your feelings out about your boredom to the faintly interested front desk clerk they offer you an interesting package – a three night stay in one of Mayfair’s suites, complete with [private] terraced Japanese soaking tub for two (you know, for when you have those extra friendly “guests” over during your stay). Interested, you ask them to elaborate more – they then hand you keys to a classic Ferrari for you to cruise around town in.

By this point, you’re pretty damn elated. Until like a high school fan girl you quickly find out you also get access to that speedboat you always drooled over but never really took the initiative to buy (it’s okay, you can scream inside. I won’t judge.)…bet you wish you’d taken up those nautical lessons eh?

Once you successfully manage to not capsize the boat, hop in your new-found Ferrari and hit up all the great night life you were informed about but never really knew existed, then unwind with your S.O. or “vacation squeeze” and enjoy a rooftop massage while you relax thinking about how a little random conversation went a long way, introducing you to a new, memorable experience.

You’re welcome.

For The Weekenders: Club Adoré, RedCap Chauffeurs, Sobering Up With Cookie Monster…

3:26 a.m. and I find myself sobering up after an EPIC night out. Again, just like this week’s Episodic Musing all posts this week are ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY posts for RegosLife.com. I won’t bore you with the details of dinner and the like – however I will tell you about this awesome little club me and some friends went to, and the sobering up rituals that were carried out shortly after. Enjoy.

For starters, this was an incredibly interesting night. A few friends and I got in touch and we figured it would be fitting to celebrate this site’s one year blogging anniversary in the most appropriate way possible – taking a road trip up north and loading up on a pre-weekend cheat meal at a favourite restaurant, then heading back down south and hitting up a new scene we’d never been to before: Adoré Nightclub. And I know I don’t talk like this often, maybe it’s the booze, maybe it’s not…but my gawd, that place was effing gorgeous. We’d booked the tickets in great anticipation, and I’m happy to say it wasn’t disappointing in the slightest.

They had an awesome event going on tonight, and if it weren’t for the fact that I had previous engagements set up just a few hours from now, I’d have stayed longer. The place is top notch when it comes to aesthetic appeal. The music is awesome. Sexy strangers are abundant…and for a group of exceptionally good looking people such as my friends and I, that’s a win-win-win-win for everyone.

It’s a combination of Vegas and Mardi Gras all rolled into one, with dancing women in odd get ups, DJs that know their music, and enough stunning interior design to make even the straightest man take notice.

It’s one of those places that you can go to with friends or take someone you’ve gotten past that first coffee date to – not a “romantic” atmosphere, but not a “party hard” one either. A mix of upscale and know-how-to-party. A hybrid version of a club when you take Las Vegas tastes and infuse it with Miami quality – a match made it heaven. One of those places where if you wanna order champagne feel free to, because no one gives a damn and the only excuse needed is “just because.”

You’d be amazed how dress codes can separate the rowdy from the “we’re just here to chill.”

A person just doesn’t have time to get into an altercation when they’re suited up.

The next logical step after a place like this and about 4 or 5 drinks in was to get sobered up…which is where one must choose:

Be a dumbass and try to drive drunk…or be responsible and hand your keys over to a stranger.

The last part is not as idiotic as it sounds. At least if you’re using a RedCap Chauffeur.

Let’s be honest – drinking in America can be annoying. If you’re not in a trendy little area where the nightlife and restaurants are within comfortable walking distance to each other, you’re either stuck sobering up at the club or lounge, or wind up having one hell of a long, stumbling but steady, awkward walk to the nearest food joint, and back to your car.

RedCap takes the embarrassment out of all of that – not to mention takes the pressure off who’s gonna be the “designated driver” for the night…or the dreaded cop paranoia.

The process is simple: Download the app for your android or apple smartphone, open it up, start booking your reservation for a driver to drive you around in the next couple hours….and that’s it. It’s really that simple. There’s no fee to join, the drivers are all certified (meaning you won’t have Rapey Mc-Rape eyeing your new squeeze) and insured, and frankly, the whole concept in general is pretty damn cool. RedCap‘s one of those companies that have been around for a while now, so it’s worth giving it a spin.

So in knowing all this – where would your new found chauffeur take you? To hang with cookie monster of course. Though I doubt at 1 a.m. you’d find him on Sesame Street.

If cookie monster was an insomniac or into drinking, you’d instead find him at Insomnia Cookies – the place to go when it’s the wee hours of the morning on a Thursday and your usual sobering up hot-spots have already closed their doors.

Unless it’s Taco Bell.

The Bell never lets anyone down.

Getting back to the point though…when you’ve got a sweet instead of a savory tooth after a night out of drinking, Insomnia Cookies is your go-to spot. Why? Well, for starters, they do both delivery and pick up. So if that little chauffeur of yours dropped you home instead of one of Insomnia Cookies stores, you can avoid the angry I’m-still-too-tipsy-to-drive fist shaking in dismay, and instead conquer the great feat of getting your fingers to go where your eyes direct – thus ordering up deliciousness online in under 5 minutes.

They don’t just do cookies either. Nope. But brownies, frozen desserts, cookie cakes and naturally, milk. Or water…for the lactose intolerant among us.

For The Weekenders: Three More Liquors You Should Know About…

Since the last For The Weekenders got so many views, figured I’d continue the trend this week. So here’s three more liquors you should know about. Enjoy.

For The Weekenders: Three More Liquors You Should Know About…

For The Weekenders Three More Liquors You Should Know About, Rego's Life For The Weekenders Three More Liquors You Should Know About, Rego's Life For The Weekenders, Rego's Life, regoslife, liquor, alcohol, tequila, absinthe, vodka, stolichnaya, absinthe original, espolon tequila

Quality liquor is a vital key in having a decent get together. Here’s three quality liquors that won’t leave you hanging when you’re looking for drinks that taste great, start great, and end smooth. Out of the various brands tried, these are my personal favorites.

When you’re looking for a happy drink, choose tequila. More appropriately, Espolón Tequila. Not a lot of tequilas you can drink straight without a chaser or being chilled – this is not one of those tequilas. Usually I like to have mixers with tequila – this is not one of those tequilas.

Espolón Tequila Blanco has a nice start, light to medium bodied palate and a strong agave flavor. Really take the time out to taste it and your taste buds will pick up hints of pepper, vanilla bean, and (interestingly enough) pineapple. To top it all off it’s got a nice, smooth finish. What more could you ask for? Another great tequila from Espolón is Espolón Reposado, a much bolder, aged tequila, which you can use in this recipe:

If you’re really into cocktails, the Decolletage is for you. The name itself perks the ears up, and if any of you have seen the movie Alfie (Jude Law version), you’ll laugh a little every time you drink this:

Decolletage

1.5 oz. Espolón Reposado tequila
1 oz. Dubonnet Rouge
.5 oz. ounce Aperol
.25 oz. Fernet Branca
orange twist to garnish

Get a mixing glass and stir all the ingredients over ice, then strain into a double old fashioned glass. Break the orange twist over the drink, allowing the citrus oils to blend in, then add it as the garnish. Simple enough to make at home with any standard mini bar.

….but tequila’s not for everyone. Especially not the “angry” drunks. It’s been known to sever friendships after one too many shots. The alternative? No, not beer….absinthe, my young, boozy apostle. Absinthe. One thing I can say I love about Europe – the plethora of absinthe. The absinthe you find out in the states just isn’t the same as the kind you find in Europe, and it’s said to be made up of synthetic ingredients. Not good. Huge no.

Absinthe Original is what I used to have – which, might I add, I haven’t in quite some time. Absinthe is one of those drinks best enjoyed with a date you want to get intimate with, or a really, really close group of friends. It’s the friendly drink. The drink that makes you feel awesome, mellow, cool. The drink that no matter what should not be abused…but respected.

Though the best way to be had is straight mixed with melted sugar, there is one drink you absolutely must try…

Dead Man’s Mule – it’s not as bad as it sounds, BUT, I highly advise you have two of these MAXIMUM, and not a drop more.

1 shot Absinthe (duh.)
1 shot Goldschlager (cinnamon schnapps)
.75 shot Orgeat (syrup)
.75 shot lime juice
Top it off with ginger beer
Garnish with a decent lime wedge or two
1 long slice of ginger

Shake and strain the first four ingredients, then top it off with ginger beer. If you’re not used to the taste of absinthe, have it over ice in a collins glass or my favorite, mason jar. Add a lime wedge to garnish, cut one thick slice of ginger, and add it into the glass so the ginger juices can mix with the alcohol.

I used to drink this back in uni all the time and I can still say today it’s one of my favorite drinks.

Alright so you’ve had a taste of Latin America. You’ve had a taste of the Western Europe. Now let’s head East…but not too far east. Just enough to land us in Mother Russia – yeah, you got it: vodka. Not just any vodka. No, not Smirnoff. Not Grey Goose. Not even Absolut. Real vodka. Vodka that’ll put hair on your chest and fire in your heart…

….and the only one that comes to mind is Stolichnaya.

I used to be a fan of Absolut, until I saw the light. Yes, Absolut is smooth, clean…but somehow, one day it just stopped mixing (pardon the pun) well with me. So I switched…and lo and behold that switch introduced me to Stoli.

This one starts, and finishes smooth, with citrusy hints the same way I like my gin. Vodka is one of those drinks that should be enjoyed on it’s own, on the rocks. As I ‘ve said many times before, though there are a lot of tasty drinks out there, sometimes if I’m on a strict fitness routine and I’m changing up for strength/stamina, I’ll lay off on the drinking a bit and just go with something boring like vodka soda – and no, that doesn’t mean I’m some calorie obsessed asshole. It just means I’m conscientious when the time calls for it.

Then other times I like a bit of flavor. Still though, not wanting to lose the taste of Stoli, one of my favorite recipes for this vodka would have to be the Desiree. Which consists of….

1 oz. Stoli
5 oz. Creme de Cassis

So straightforward you can make it at home without going out and buying 50 different ingredients, and you can even instruct your casual bartender on how to make it without coming across as a “snob” or “pretentious,” as some people ever so affectionately like to call it.

I hope everyone has an awesome weekend. 😉

As always…

Stay awesome.

For The Weekenders: Three Liquors You Should Know About…

Every once in a while, it’s nice to share some of your favorite things with other people. In particularly, people whom you enjoy having a small gathering with.

Often the trend nowadays is for everyone to bring their own alcohol, and share it around – but if you’re looking to share something more than just beer or wine, considering that’s what most usually bring, here’s three kinds of alcohol that will be sure to make a great night for everyone. Enjoy.

For The Weekenders Three Liquors You Should Know About, Rego's Life For The Weekenders, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders, Rego's Life For The Weekenders Three Liquors You Should Know About, Regos Life, regoslife, american honey, new amsterdam gin, jaegermeister, best liquors, the best liquor, best liquor brands, best selling liquor, best party liquor, best kind of liquor,

Let’s start off with my favorite….Jagermeister. More of a digestif liqueur, this stuff is amazing. Good God…there’s so much you can do with it – so many drinks you can make. The most well known being Jagerbombs – Red Bull and Jager (formerly Jager and beer)…but there are many, many more mixes than that.

I really enjoy the taste of this stuff, not to mention the fact it’s made of 56 herbs and spices. Usually when I drink I try and drink clean, and am very particular about the type of alcohol I take into my system. Hence why if for example, if anyone were to hang out with me, it’s more than likely you wouldn’t see me mixing alcohols.

So besides the ever-so-famous Jagerbomb what are two more drinks that are worthy of mentioning? Read on…

For The Weekenders Three Liquors You Should Know About, Rego's Life For The Weekenders, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders, Rego's Life For The Weekenders Three Liquors You Should Know About, Regos Life, regoslife, american honey, new amsterdam gin, jaegermeister, best liquors, the best liquor, best liquor brands, best selling liquor, best party liquor, best kind of liquor

The Bob Dylan. – Fairly simple, with a decent proof. You’re gonna need a blender for this one – it was originally made with Surge…but that was discontinued. Then I used to make it with Vault…and that was discontinued. Now, I used Mountain Dew. Take 12 oz. Mountain Dew, 4 oz. Jagermeister, and 16 oz. ice. Put all this in a blender, throw the top on, and blend until smooth. Careful though – this is soda you’re blending, after all.

Serve it in a highball glass and what do you get? One chilling, refreshing drink with a nice aftertaste. The ice M.D. taste hit you first, with a nice finish of jager once it warms up as it goes down. Try it out, and if you have already, comment below.

Reservoir Dog. Named after one of my favorite movies, this one’s quick and simple to make, as all it takes is one part Bailey’s Irish cream and one part Jager. Mix both over ice cubes, strain, and before you know it you’ve got one excellent drink that didn’t takes years of mixology to perfect.

Jager, depending on your alcohol tolerance, is one of those alcohols that give you a nice buzz without the terrible hangover. Quite honestly, what causes a terrible hangover is one of two things:

A) Cheaply made alcohol
B) Not enough oxygen to the brain – not drinking enough water after you’ve had your fill of alcohol

Next up…New Amsterdam Gin. Usually, I’m a bit of a gin snob. I like Beefeater London Dry Gin all the way – but sometimes, just sometimes, I like to change things up. New Amsterdam Gin is (suprisingly) something that caught my attention one day while I was out with a few friends getting some spirits for a small pool party.

It’s a bit lacking in Juniper, but it does quite well in fruity drinks, due to its citrusy flavor. It’s also one of the better gins if you’re looking to pay less than $20.

Personally, when it comes to gin I have one favorite drink. It’s very simple, and sometimes boring – but with my fitness regime and again, conscientious nature, it’s something I don’t mind. Sometimes, the best things are the simplest – one of which is your classic G&T, or Gin and Tonic.

If you’re looking for more flavor though, these two should do the trick:

Classic Clover Club. – Another classic, but with a twist. Created in the 1800’s, this is one of those classics that everyone should try at least once.

All it takes is 2 oz. gin, half a lemon’s worth of juice, 1 egg white, 1 tsp. sugar, and lastly 1/4 raspberry syrup. Pour everything in to a cocktail shaker with ice, and shake like your life depends on it. This is so the sugar and egg mix well, and properly. Strain it into a cocktail glass and you’re good to go. Many people replace the raspberry syrup with grenadine but to be quite honest, without the syrup the drink is nothing to brag about. Raspberry syrup is key.

If you like mint, Caruso is for you. This one is both old-fashioned and cocktail glass worthy, and is simple enough for even the novice bartender to make.

The ingredients? 1 oz. gin, 1 oz. dry vermouth, and a touch of green creme de menthe. Pour them into a mixing glass with ice, stir, and stir well, strain into a glass and presto – you’ve just found a drink for the upcoming St. Patty’s day.

…but maybe you’re not a gin fan. Some people hate it. Maybe you don’t even like Jager – some say it smells like medicine….but everybody loves honey, right?

Cue Wild Turkey American Honey. What can I say about this stuff…except for the fact it’s effing awesome. You can drink it straight, on the rocks, or mixed. It’s got a sweet start and robust finish. The honey is so thick, it coats the glass quite easily even if you’ve accidentally let the ice melt. Interesting fact: Whiskey back in the day used to actually be considered medicinal, and was the preferred drink over water due to a safety point of view – considering the filtration process a few hundred years ago wasn’t exactly…effective.

Sometimes I like to make Masala Chai (mixed spice tea) and spike it with an ounce or two of American Honey, makes for a real nice nightcap.

But if you prefer your drinks cold and not warm, here’s two recipes that’ll knock your socks off:

Let’s start simple, with American Honey and Ginger Beer. – Just as the name says all you really need is a large tumbler glass, limes, ginger beer, and about 30 ml of American Honey.

Pour the A.H. in the tumbler glass, slice the limes up into wedges, squeeze four over ice in that same tumbler glass, and top up with ginger beer. Keep in mind I said ginger BEER, not ginger ale – big difference. You can usually find the ginger beer in the “ethnic” aisle of your local grocer. No Canada Dry here folks.

Nothing like a little Lo-Fi THC. – If you’re looking for something a little more rewarding to make – as in, complex, then you’ll really enjoy Lo-Fi THC. I love making this whenever friends are over. I don’t care what anyone says, the way in which you mix a drink determines the flavor, so follow these instructions closely…

First, you’ll need the following:

30ml Wild Turkey Bourbon
30ml American Honey
30ml Campari
Dissolved sugar cubes
Dash of whiskey bitters
An orange rind twist for garnish

Throw all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker GLASS. Stir 3 times clockwise, then ONE time anti-clockwise. Place your ice in a tumbler glass and start pouring the ingredients through a strainer over the aforementioned ice. Top it off with the orange rind in the glass and voila – you just became 50x more impressive to that date you invited over.

You’re welcome…and I hope everyone has an awesome weekend. 😉

As always…

Stay awesome.

For The Weekenders: Create Your Weekend…

This weekend, it’s all about you. What you want to do, where you want to go, who you want to see, and where you want to be. Figured it’d be a good idea to change things up a bit from the regular For The Weekenders and put you, in the driver’s seat this time. So here’s three great apps I personally use whenever I wanna just wing it. They’ve been around for a while now, and I’m surprised not as many people have them considering that fact.

Bottom line, when you’re looking to make a choice on a whim, the last thing you need is something slowing down that impulse or snap decision. Fortunately, these apps help you avoid encountering such a clutchy mishap. Enjoy.

Create Your Weekend. Starting Now.

for the weekenders create your weekend, rego's life for the weekenders, rego's life, for the weekenders, rego's life for the weekenders create your weekend, urban daddy the next move, yelp app, yelp monacle, fandango app, ud the next move app, weekend activities, fun weekend activities, restaurant apps, movie apps

So your friends decided to drop in on you by surprise and now you guys are out on the next plane to [insert awesome city here]. The minute you touch down you all have no fucking clue where to go, but you know you’re hungry, thirsty, and ready to party. What do you do? Casually reach for your smartphone and tap that little app called “Yelp.”

Yeah I know. Yelp’s been around for a while now…but surprisingly, its app is underused and underrated. Sure, you can search for restaurants, bars, etc the typical, boring way…but what about when you’re out walking around downtown and have no sense of direction and no idea where you’re going? Cue Monocle.

What is monocle exactly? Oh you know, just a bundle of awesomeness. That utilizes augmented reality. Remember all those futuristic shows you used to watch when you were a kid? Oddly enough without even realizing it we’ve reached the future all short of flying cars. Computers with touch screen capability that fit in the palm of your hand, voice to text, A.I., use of Wi-Fi in airplanes, robot vacuum cleaners, you name it most of it’s been done….then comes along this sweet ass app.

If virtual reality and actual reality had a baby, they’d name it Monocle. Or simulated reality – but honestly, Monocle sounds way cooler.

Long story short, you simply open the Yelp app, select “Monocle,” hold your phone up in front of you, and away you go – a screen of what’s right in front of you, with access to information on restaurants, lounges, bars, and any other activity you can imagine, reviews included. You get the name, the hours, the review ratings, pricing, and most importantly distance, of any restaurant within your GPS‘ close radius all at quite literally, your fingertips.

You can turn around full circle and see every POI (point of interest) within that range. When something piques your curiosity, you simply tap to select it, get the directions, further stats, etc, and in under five minutes you’ve just found a place you and you friends can party. Welcome to the future. Go you.

for the weekenders create your weekend, rego's life for the weekenders, rego's life, for the weekenders, rego's life for the weekenders create your weekend, urban daddy the next move, yelp app, yelp monacle, fandango app, ud the next move app, weekend activities, fun weekend activities, restaurant apps, movie apps, fist pump fridays rego's life

How about those situations where you’re on a casual date, you know, just coffee, conversation, that sort of thing. Things seem to be going pretty well considering you’ve been meeting up casually, and quite honestly you like to maintain a “mysterious but observant” aura. So you both start on the subject of media, books, usual things that help humans determine similar interest that don’t go too deep, and your date mentions they’ve been figuratively dying to see that new movie that just came out.

The night is still young, it’s quite a low key, casual date, and there’s no particular plans set in stone except enjoying each other’s company…would you continue sitting there talking, or use that opportunity to do something pretty cool?

Good – I was hoping you’d pick that last option. So here’s the game plan – you get your date to elaborate a bit more on that movie they were talking about, while you, my dear friend, quickly look at your smart phone as if you’ve just received a text, and be sure to continue engaging in conversation so you don’t come off as an arse. Meanwhile, you’ll pop open your Fandango app and book tickets for two then and there at the nearest cinema available.

It’s from here, after your date says “…and yeah, that’s what it’s about. I just can’t wait to go see it,” that you smile and say “you know, that’s funny, I had a feeling you’d like that film, so I booked us tickets. Show starts in 30 – wanna get out of here?”

Smoothness points: 10. Mystery: kept. Observance points: 50. Skip the popcorn, get the sour patch candies…or no candy at all.

Saving the best for last, this app is one I use quite often, and honestly, I’ve gotta say, it always pulls through. Let’s say you’re not out on a casual, low key date. Let’s say your friends and you are in swank mode and hopped a plane to Vegas. Let’s say you’re out with someone who’s high maintenance. Or let’s just say you feel like abusing your bank account a little bit – why shouldn’t you? You work hard at your business.

This is where Urban Daddy’s: The Next Move app, comes into play. Why do I love this thing so much? Because it’s so fucking awesome. Seriously. It’s got a nice little human touch, and points you to only the best spots in town. Scratch that – it doesn’t just point you to the best spots, but personalizes the experience and tailors it with just a few short scenario descriptions that fit whatever situation you’re in at that given moment.

I’ve had this app since the beginning – stuck with it through the glitches, and today can honestly say the guys over at UD have expanded it into a damn fine piece of programming that they should be proud to brag about.

So the next time you’re out and about, either with your closest friends or flying solo working on your charm skills, remember this app. Get a little adventurous, forget all your usual spots (unless they’re really primo – as in, exceptional quality.), and live a little. Your friends will thank you. That 10 you’ve been flirting with for the past 10 minutes will thank you. You’ll thank me later.
