With summer coming to a close and September right around the corner, I wanted to make this week’s For The Weekenders special.

I remember when I was a kid growing up in a four season climate, one of the best things about the beginning of fall/autumn was having summer go out with a bang.

So here’s some ideas for those of your that love summer just as much as you do fall, and wanna make sure 2014’s is one to remember. Enjoy.

For The Weekenders: The Last Days of Summer…

I don’t know about you guys, but nothing brings back awesome memories like a crackling fire, crashing waves, s’mores, and football on the beach like a nice bonfire does.

There really is something special about a good bonfire. Maybe it’s the fact that you’re surrounded by good friends…or maybe it’s the fact that you know it’s the end of something good but the beginning of something better – but bottom line is the warmth – both literally and figuratively – that such an activity brings to the table is beyond compare.

So grab a few beers, maybe a cooler full of some fine items for grilling, don’t forget the marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate (or, get some delicious pre-made ones to really make it special), and sit down with a few close friends, while you all burn the night away with awesome stories and swap some of your favorite memories of this years summer.

If you don’t live by the beach or just aren’t too talented at creating a controlled fire, no worries, there’s always alternatives.

Next one up on the list is for those of you that are huge car enthusiasts.

What’s better than driving down endless miles of road into the sunset with the warm hum of the engine and cool summer breeze in your hair?

Doing it with your S.O. or maybe one or two of your best friends.

We’ve all at some point wanted an endless summer. Make it feel like one by planning an unforgettable road trip with that special someone of yours or a few close buddies. If you’ve got a ride you’re happy enough to call your pride and joy take it out on the open road and really open up that engine – or if you don’t feel like abusing your car with that many miles rent a classic and REALLY make it that road trip you’ll never forget.

The main thing here is to get out there and explore. Have a bucket list to check off – or no bucket list at all. Get creative. Get caught up in the moment. Stop off at a drive in movie. Get lost…only to find yourself again.

Wherever you go, make sure it’s somewhere that’s special to YOU. Grab a few refreshments, crank up the tunes, wear your favorite t-shirt/polo like it’s going out of style, make good use of those aviators….

and like I once read off of a piece of clothing by Volcom (I kid you not) – Leave only footprints. Take only photos.

Speaking of dying sunsets, if you want an epic adventure and *really* want to get the most out of this summer, don’t limit yourself to keeping it local. This one’s more tailored for those of you that live on the west coast. You know what I’m talking about – and no, it isn’t Cabo.

Go all out and check out bits of Central or South America – two countries that have the most gorgeous scenery around, endless sunsets, insane local food, with more tequila and Latin dance culture than you can shake a stick at.

If I had to pick, I highly suggest you check out Brazil. The culture is awesome….the food is awesome…and the music? Perfect.

This idea’s flexible enough to experience with friends, your S.O., or even by yourself.

There are times in life when humans need a complete wind down period – no noise, no everyday “static,” no distractions…in order to truly get back to finding – or discovering a new part of – themselves.

The dreamers and the entrepreneurs know this, but only the few strong and wise entrepreneurs that are dreamers and dream in their wake understand this. It’s the weekend. You’ve had a hard week at work. Being a business owner or supervisor of some sort is no easy task – so you deserve time to kick back and relax (unless you’re putting on weight – in that case, gym then holiday.) – so what’s the first thing you do?

Stop treating that laptop of yours like a work horse and give it a break – allow it to book a nice little getaway trip for you and [insert S.O.’s name or recently new found fling’s description here] that’ll help you unwind from your daily stresses.

Naturally, your first thought is Maldives.

Oh, it wasn’t?

Well it is now.

More specifically Maalifushi by Como – a sweet little getaway spot that helps you melt away all your worries with just a few days at one of their suites and villas.

This is one of those places for when you want top class spa treatment while being surrounded by copious amounts of too-good-to-be-true blue oceanfront scenery.

It’s one of those places where you go to get not just a run of the mill spa treatment, but unique, unforgettable, personalised service – service so personal they know that that little black mark just above your left bum cheek isn’t a birthmark, but in fact spawned from that one time you were almost going to get that tattoo you’d regret for the rest of your life.

….though that level of personal probably stemmed from one too many cocktails and a slip of the tongue.

But honestly, do you care?

Not really – because after awakening in your suite, you’ll be too busy receiving invigorating facials and Taksu massages.

Word of advice – take the villa. The Maalifushi Water Villa.

Why? Because…

Look at all this gorgeousness.

Seriously – with it’s own private pool and sundeck, and your very own butler on call (Alfred – let’s call him Alfred), there’s no reason not to.

The villa’s got plenty of light, luxurious bathroom features, baby-butt-soft-to-the-touch bed linen, and enough amenities to make you feel like royalty during your stay before being politely slapped back to reality that no, although your full name does sound rather sophisticated, there is no royal blood running through those veins.

Sorry about that.

But at least Maalifushi by Como made you feel like it.

Let’s say your definition of relaxing isn’t winding down with massages you’ve never heard of, or secluded over water villas, though – let’s say you like a bit of adventure to blow off steam after a good amount of hard work.

That’s cool – I hear you…as does Villa Manzu, cozily tucked away in Costa Rica.

While Villa Manzu also prides itself in it’s secluded 30,000 sq. ft. getaway, they don’t skimp when it comes to staying active and manage to implement the best of both worlds at their 8 suite estate.

….and I’m not kidding when I say estate.

The place is massive with loads of places to unwind – and wind up – and the activities offered are more than you can shake a stick at or count on two hands.

So whenever you fancy a bit of rock climbing after lounging in a hammock for the better half of the morning, or feel the need to sober up from all the choice wine offered by doing a bit of waterfall exploration, they’ve got it all waiting and ready for you at the snap of your fingers.

….just don’t actually snap your fingers at anyone. That could really piss a few people off.

In terms of which suite to pick, check out The Madera Suite:

Though fairly obvious, it’s gorgeous, with an ideal location due to the fact it’s tucked away in its own little corner. Pair that with the fact each and every suite comes with its own little butler (double win), each bathroom is decked out in marble, cigars and wine are always on the ready, and the villas chef will make you whatever it is you desire – whether it’s steak for breakfast or crepes for dinner – and you’ve got yourself a valid excuse to take “business” trips more often for the “greater good” of the company.

You know.

International Business R&D…all that fun stuff.

Pay attention carefully to this next one, because it’s for all you hippies-at-heart out there who graduated from sandals and hemp clothing to linen and a more refined way of keeping things “natural.”

If you’re looking for a place that manages to integrate modern day luxury into the backdrops of nature, look no further – Botanique’s already on the ball and got you covered.

Botanique Hotel & Spa is somewhat of an anomaly – the kind of thing that once you find you want to share and brag about, yet keep exclusive and hold onto forever.

Smack in the heart of Bairro dos Mellos, this is the place to go for those nature lovers out there, who want hiking in the afternoons, and a nice hot shower in the evenings plus decent rest with the zero percent possibility of being attacked by a bear because “dammit Jake, you left that leftover lox and bagels out instead of burying it, you lazy son of a bitch.”

It’s the kind of place you go to when you don’t want the sound of traffic or the annoying pitch of car horns, but instead the calming effects of sweet melodies from surrounding rivers.

I’m not kidding.

There are no motorized vehicles allowed here.

To top it off, the architecture is so unique in the sense that the place has been built off of its own natural resources – right down to the food with farm to plate dining, spa treatments with tropical rain saunas, and pretty epic wooden beams aged 100+ years old.

Oh – and did I mention for a mild head trip the floating chamber they’ve got with underwater sounds and image projections?

Yeah.

One of a kind.

Musings Episode 7: Work, Play, and Love…

Tonight I thought I’d get off the usual track of how my recent episodes have been going, instead switching to something a little different, yet still applicable to all aspects of life.

So many moments throughout the day people are clouded with the daily grind of work. Many times a balance is forgotten to be had, instead the sole focus being monetary gain.

I don’t blame you for it.

There’s many awesome, and great things and experiences money can buy…and for all those who say money can’t buy happiness – bullshit. Like the infamous quote that once floated around in the social ether once upon a time, “money can’t buy me happiness…but at least I can cry in my Ferrari.”

Also my private jet.

Money is a very, very useful and beneficial tool, if used correctly. The thing that can mess people up however, is losing sight of the purpose of creating and/or attaining the money.

Things are not the primary objective here. As I’ve said before it’s experiences. Road trips across Europe. Baseball games in South Korea. Sauna with your S.O. in Japan. Sandboarding in Brazil.

We live in such a 40-hour work week driven society, many forget that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy…ergo why this is reflected for many by blowing hundreds on alcohol over the weekend.

Throw in the consumerism of technology today, the “OMG I MUST have the iPhone 5, the 4S is like, so played out!” and you’ve got a recipe for a bad mix.

I’ll admit it, aside from all the B.S. the media has portrayed since the beginning of time, one thing they did get spot on is the bits they’ve done on technology and the de-sensitizing of the youth today.

Why, you ask, do I agree with this?

Well, before technology, ironic as it may seem, there was more creativity…hear me out for a second. I’m talking about creativity in activities, in socializing, and in getting out and hitting the town.

Again, you’re probably asking, why do I say this?

In the movie Powder (1995), one of the characters quotes “It’s become appallingly clear that our technology has surpassed our humanity.”

I find this an interesting quote, because partially it’s true. Think about it – before the internet and smart phone age, the majority of the time if people wanted to talk or socialize with each other, they had two options – either pick up a land line (or if you could afford it) grab up your cell phone that was once the size of 2 bricks taped together, and call up whoever it was they wanted to get in contact with. If that wasn’t the case or if airtime was too ridiculous to pay for (before the days of “unlimited” everything), you had to go and meet up with that friend – or go over to their house.

Unless you were this guy. This guy answered to no one.

There was a very critical human element in this…it was an engagement that required effort and time, and because this effort and time was expended many made sure that meet or that phone call was used well or properly.

Now? We just shoot text messages to each other, not even having to take the time out to text with our fingers. People constantly in touch with people they know everyday, and by the end of the day being saturated with the interaction, feel that actually meeting up with someone isn’t that big of a deal. They’ve communicated throughout the day, so why would there be more to talk about in person?

…and contrary to popular belief, the mass majority of people who text and drive are not, just young people…fuckers.

This type of communication in my opinion has affected multiple human relationships, from friendships to relationships.

The friends you used to hang out with in primary school everyday after class, who stuck with you through high school and you used to talk everyday to on the phone, now get shot a casual text to “see how they’re doing”…

…your mom who you used to call on the phone and talk to for at least fifteen minutes you shoot a quick Happy Mother’s Day text to instead of a quick voicemail before work….

…what every mother loves to hear.

….that new girlfriend you have freaks out because you didn’t message her back fast enough or maybe didn’t use the right emoticon in the right sentence….10 years ago you realize the drama could’ve been avoided if you just rang her up for a few minutes…

Technology has reached a peak where people break up and divorce over Facebook statuses and wall posts.

Fucking Facebook.

One wrong picture.

One wrong status.

Kids nowadays don’t knock on their friend’s doors but instead text, to say they’re outside. The fear of walking up to your friend’s door and [god forbid] having their parents answer is greater than running into traffic with your shoe laces from both shoes tied together and tripping.

Smooth, ace…

It seems to me now we’re so hung up on data limits and the newest apps we forgot about the basics of human interaction.

This can – and has led to social dysfunction and downfalls. What happened to the novelty of paper birthday cards?

The fun of making the cake from scratch (heck, even the box), instead of picking it up from the store or a caterer?

Or how about instead of watching a movie on NetFlix on your cell phone while sitting at Starbuck’s with your S.O., actually taking the time to get messy in the kitchen and make dinner with each other then watching something on NetFlix with an actual TV later on?

It’s the little things that matter but people have forgotten about…we forget to get back down to earth and remember the simpler things.

The effort.

The imagination.

The thought.

The involvement.

The more convenience we develop, it seems the less we actually attach or feel like we’ve created or engaged in something that’s a part of us.

This is what I mean when I refer to play and love in the title of this week’s episodic musing. This is why every week, I try to give you ladies and gents different ideas on what to do over the weekend – because if you notice, most of them involve heavy socializing.

They require an effort.

Engagement.

Imagination…and involvement.

Without these, we’re merely on auto pilot with technology dictating to us what we should or shouldn’t do, or how it’s easier to do this than that. Like the 8 ball we used to ask questions to when we were younger.

But I like the effort. I like the effort of ringing up a friend and sorting out logistics for our next meet instead of through text.

I like the effort of looking for that one special gift for an anniversary by going store to store and taking in the sights, instead of just hopping on Amazon and ordering.

Call me old-fashioned or old school, but I like that feeling of putting effort into connecting with other people.

Networking and genuine interaction is key in everything – business, pleasure, and love.

It’s what keeps and maintains things long-term.

What people have to remember is this: with instant gratification, comes instant boredom.

The faster the high, the harder the crash.

For The Weekenders: Sandboarding in Saudi Arabia Tony Hawk Style, Hookah in Downtown Delray, Fitness Like The Miami Heat

Snowboarding. Skateboarding. Surfing. Wakeboarding.

I’ve always been a fan of any kind of board sports, and recently the most recent sport that’s been on my bucket list is sandboarding. Talk about kick ass. For a boarding enthusiast, anything with miles of open turf is a dream come true…and sandboarding in Saudi Arabia is a boarder’s dream come true.

Which is why for this post for the weekend, I’m kicking off with sandboarding in Rub’ Al Khali Abu Dabi – translation – Saudi Arabia. We’re talking miles of untainted and ever changing turf.

If you’re a snowboarder waiting for the season to come, this is the perfect activity to bide you over until it does. The experience is epic, which is clearly an understatement. The Rub’ Al Khali is the largest continuous sand body on the planet…meaning hundreds of miles of fun for you and your friends.

Fact: The sport of sandboarding originated in Brazil in the southern state capital of Florianópolis in 1986. So if you’re part Portuguese like me…now is the perfect time to embrace some culture.

If you can stand the heat, you can have a once in a lifetime adventure that could be an excellent cocktail story when you’re trying to chat up that 10 at the lounge bar you frequent. Check it out – it’s an activity, and experience, you won’t want to miss.

So let’s say after all that excitement, you want to wind down with drinks and something that reminds you of the middle east…well, if you’re in the SoFlo area, there’s always Breathe on Atlantic Ave. in Delray…hookah and drinks…what more could you ask for?

VIP rooms are available, when you feel like treating yourself to a rockstar moment and adding that extra touch to your outings with a date you’re not really trying to impress, but would like to make them feel like they’re seeing something special. Imagine your own butler, bottle service and flat screen TVs, and you’ve got yourself a night to remember.

Alright, so you’ve done the sandboarding, jetted back to the West, and now after all that, you kind of want to feel like you’re getting back in shape for the week ahead. What do you do now? Well…as a fitness enthusiast, the first place I’d go is ProTerf.

Ed Downs is the man who runs this place – and he’s the real deal. Working with Navy SEALS and inducted into the US Martial Arts Hall of Fame, if you want a serious workout he’s the man to see and ProTerf is the place to go.

You can choose between group and private, and if you’ve always wanted to workout side by side with a professional athlete, well you’ve come to the right place. Just beware…you may very well be sore the next morning. Stretching before and after is advised, and as always…stay plenty hydrated. You can increase your rep count and performance by at least 10% if you do. I’ve been in fitness for the past 8 years and can attest to that.

For The Weekenders: ATVs In The Desert, Helicopters By The Beach, Upscale Bowling In The City

Alright, so a little late in posting this one, but I have a reason: the travel bug. So instead of the usual, strictly domestic spot-pick, I thought I’d throw some variety into the mix. Enjoy.

I remember when I was a teenager the thrill of racing ATV’s through acres of land with friends at the homestead in Virginia – saying it was thrilling was an understatement. It’s the kind of activity where you actually feel good being covered with mud and specks of dust and sand. This week I got the urge to go for the same thing – but on a bigger level. So I got to researching – and what I found, the epicness (yes, I know that’s not a word) cannot be described in mere speech alone.

There are three things in life that bring out the best in me – travel, adventure, and speed. Lençóis Maranhenses was able to fulfill all three.

What is Lençóis Maranhenses you ask? Well, if one of Evel Knievel‘s sons married Gisele Bündchen, had a baby, and that baby somehow had Indiana Jones as its uncle, it would be named this exact go-to location. I’m talking an ATV tour of Brazil’s endless lagoons, including minimum one desert.

It doesn’t stop there, continuing with scenic riverboat floating, kite surfing and dune buggying – yes, now is your time to relive Mario Kart in real life. So let’s say after all that ATVing you’re pumped and don’t quite want the fun to end, what then? Well, if you’re feeling a little like getting in touch with your inner Nathan Drake, you can hit up a gun range with a woman’s touch, Sandy Springs Gun Club and Range.

Take your pick…

Keep in mind, this is not your average range. Besides high powered firearms and the choice of a tactical shooting session, these two ladies who created the place also offer a cushy lounge area where you can relax post-target practice…and if you’re anything like me, this is what will win you over.

“Wow…For your first time, you were pretty good at that B27 target…all 6 shots dead center.”

I’m sure your date would be pleasantly surprised to know that power and style can come in one package.

But let’s say you wanna take things up a notch, and get a little adventurous in the city instead. What then? Well, there’s always helicopters and sushi.

‘Cause you know..that’s how we do it in Miami….if you’re here to stay, you’re here to play – and Helicopters Over Miami is just the place you want to book with.

…and if you look close enough, my house is juuuuuust over…..there.
No I’m totally joshing you…that’s my vacation home.

They have numerous tours that span over various areas such as Gables Estates, Coconut Grove, Brickell, Downtown Miami, Sunny Isles Beaches, and even Ft. Lauderdale Beaches when you feel like heading a little further up north. What’s even better is you can make it a quick, nice thing to do before dinner with one of their half hour to one hour tours, or if you feel like something more personal, go for a custom tailored tour.

What’s even better is, if you’re an HSBC card holder, you get perks such as discounts and additional features. How’s that for feeling like 007?

The name is Bond…James Bond.

After the helicopter ride, you may find you’re hungry from all the excitement….no, not for steak…or even something quick and oily. Since you’ve spent time in the sky, might as well make it feel like you flew to the Asia Pacific for something more…exotic. So what do you do? Well, you whip out your smartphone, load up Monacle on your Yelp app and tap your way…to where it says Bond Street Lounge can satisfy your palette.

And satisfy your palette it will. I’ve been a repeat customer at this place for some time now, and with dishes like Sake Steamed Clams, and Blue Fin Toro Carpaccio, there’s a reason why I am.

And the sushi? Well, hell yes is all I can say.

They have an extensive menu of sushi and other Japanese but fusion filled dishes. So if you’re looking for something a little more like beef, you’ve got it.

But let’s say you don’t feel quite like being so adventurous, and instead want something more low key…let’s say you wanna kick it old school, and bring back some high school memories.

Then it’s Splitsville Miami to the rescue. Other locations being available, imagine a bowling alley with an upscale entertainment approach – billiards tables, a full service (gourmet) dinner lounge, and multiple bars dotted throughout the place. If I could describe this place in two words, it’d have to be luxury bowling.

Table for two, reservation booked for 8 o’ clock…

After 8 p.m. there is a dress code – smart casual only. Dress to impress is the rule, and dependent upon location this could mean no sunglasses indoors (this isn’t Doucheville), no athletic wear, and no cut-off shorts. This is, after all, upscale bowling and pool. The best part is it’s a mix of innocence and adult life – you can choose to come here with your nephew or niece in the day, then make reservations for you and that special someone in the evening.

Another round fellas?

I think it’s the perfect spot for guys/girls night out, or when you want to show your date that aside from the power car, power suit, and power life, you know how to relax and just have some fun.
