Musings Episode 68: Recognise Your Value…

Last week was pretty interesting. I’d met up with an old friend and we talked about various subjects – one that lingered on my mind was the discussion of insecurity.

I thought about it for a bit, reflecting on all the experiences I’d had with people encountered who had insecure tendencies. We’ve all got them, at some point – just different degrees. Even the most profound narcissist has a weak spot.

Really when you think a bit deeper on it, insecurity mostly stems from fears or uncertainty – past experiences, people, patterns, thought processes. If not taken care of, nipped in the bud, it can grow, like a virus.

It can lead to a lot of unfortunate habits, such as nervousness. A feeling of uneasiness with a setting, person, or people.

If not taken care of, it can really screw up someone’s life. Wanna know what I mean? Read on…

I’ve dealt with insecure people in the past – friends, family, lovers, relationships. Quite a delicate matter – it’s not something you can be insensitive about, nor is it something you can “fix” for the other party. It’s a fine line to walk when you make the decision to either associate with someone who openly lets you know about it, or whom you try and help through it.

Because really, it boils down to them – they, and only they, have the power to restore their self-confidenceassuredness, certainty.

I’d say the biggest thing insecurity comes from is not recognising one’s own value.

This is probably one of the most important steps in life, in regards to becoming your own person, knowing what you want, knowing how you want your life to go, to be.

You’ve gotta establish some type of grading system for yourself – what you will and what you won’t accept from life, from people, from everything. You have to set your value through understanding your tolerance levels, what makes you feel good and what doesn’t – and whether or not you’re willing to take the necessary steps to eliminate the latter when need be. This is inclusive of everything – social life, fitness level, diet, habits – everything.

Really, life is just a string of moments – insecurity somehow stems from a string of unfortunate ones. So you’ve gotta take the time to pick carefully the things that make you happy – the things that are HEALTHY for you.

Come to know what you find is healthy and beneficial for you, and you’ll come to understand your value. You’ll set the drawing line. You’ll eliminate unnecessary ties – you’ll establish, and maintain your power.

Now when I say power, I don’t mean who has the upper-hand – no, don’t think of it like that. I mean power in the sense that, while maintaining your value, you also command and maintain a certain level of respect from people, for yourself.

There are a lot of people you encounter in your lifetime – but there are three main categories that all people you encounter can be classified in – people that are there for you during certain times, help you/enhance you through certain times, and put you in unfortunate times.

Command and maintain the level of respect you desire, and you’ll maintain power to choose who you WANT in your life, and who you need to cut OUT, of your life.

It’s very simple.

Come to understand that power and respect are interlinked, and you’ll come to understand value.

Come to understand value, and you’ll come to understand self-confidence.

Come to understand self-confidence, and…well, insecurity is no longer existent nor a word in your vocabulary. 😉

For The Weekenders: Indian Oceans, Costa Rican Villas, Upscale Hippies

There are times in life when humans need a complete wind down period – no noise, no everyday “static,” no distractions…in order to truly get back to finding – or discovering a new part of – themselves.

The dreamers and the entrepreneurs know this, but only the few strong and wise entrepreneurs that are dreamers and dream in their wake understand this. It’s why extravagant holiday getaways are made, catering to your every need. It’s why those dreamers take the time out to take such a large part, a large image of their own dreams, and then make it a reality for YOU to discover and want so much of a part of, you practically throw your money at them in sheer ecstasy of the thought….

It’s the weekend. You’ve had a hard week at work. Being a business owner or supervisor of some sort is no easy task – so you deserve time to kick back and relax (unless you’re putting on weight – in that case, gym then holiday.) – so what’s the first thing you do?

Stop treating that laptop of yours like a work horse and give it a break – allow it to book a nice little getaway trip for you and [insert S.O.’s name or recently new found fling’s description here] that’ll help you unwind from your daily stresses.

Naturally, your first thought is Maldives.

Oh, it wasn’t?

Well it is now.

More specifically Maalifushi by Como – a sweet little getaway spot that helps you melt away all your worries with just a few days at one of their suites and villas.

This is one of those places for when you want top class spa treatment while being surrounded by copious amounts of too-good-to-be-true blue oceanfront scenery.

It’s one of those places where you go to get not just a run of the mill spa treatment, but unique, unforgettable, personalised service – service so personal they know that that little black mark just above your left bum cheek isn’t a birthmark, but in fact spawned from that one time you were almost going to get that tattoo you’d regret for the rest of your life.

….though that level of personal probably stemmed from one too many cocktails and a slip of the tongue.

But honestly, do you care?

Not really – because after awakening in your suite, you’ll be too busy receiving invigorating facials and Taksu massages.

Word of advice – take the villa. The Maalifushi Water Villa.

Why? Because…

Look at all this gorgeousness.

Seriously – with it’s own private pool and sundeck, and your very own butler on call (Alfred – let’s call him Alfred), there’s no reason not to.

The villa’s got plenty of light, luxurious bathroom features, baby-butt-soft-to-the-touch bed linen, and enough amenities to make you feel like royalty during your stay before being politely slapped back to reality that no, although your full name does sound rather sophisticated, there is no royal blood running through those veins.

Sorry about that.

But at least Maalifushi by Como made you feel like it.

Let’s say your definition of relaxing isn’t winding down with massages you’ve never heard of, or secluded over water villas, though – let’s say you like a bit of adventure to blow off steam after a good amount of hard work.

That’s cool – I hear you…as does Villa Manzu, cozily tucked away in Costa Rica.

While Villa Manzu also prides itself in it’s secluded 30,000 sq. ft. getaway, they don’t skimp when it comes to staying active and manage to implement the best of both worlds at their 8 suite estate.

….and I’m not kidding when I say estate.

The place is massive with loads of places to unwind – and wind up – and the activities offered are more than you can shake a stick at or count on two hands.

So whenever you fancy a bit of rock climbing after lounging in a hammock for the better half of the morning, or feel the need to sober up from all the choice wine offered by doing a bit of waterfall exploration, they’ve got it all waiting and ready for you at the snap of your fingers.

Though fairly obvious, it’s gorgeous, with an ideal location due to the fact it’s tucked away in its own little corner. Pair that with the fact each and every suite comes with its own little butler (double win), each bathroom is decked out in marble, cigars and wine are always on the ready, and the villas chef will make you whatever it is you desire – whether it’s steak for breakfast or crepes for dinner – and you’ve got yourself a valid excuse to take “business” trips more often for the “greater good” of the company.

You know.

International Business R&D…all that fun stuff.

Pay attention carefully to this next one, because it’s for all you hippies-at-heart out there who graduated from sandals and hemp clothing to linen and a more refined way of keeping things “natural.”

If you’re looking for a place that manages to integrate modern day luxury into the backdrops of nature, look no further – Botanique’s already on the ball and got you covered.

Botanique Hotel & Spa is somewhat of an anomaly – the kind of thing that once you find you want to share and brag about, yet keep exclusive and hold onto forever.

Smack in the heart of Bairro dos Mellos, this is the place to go for those nature lovers out there, who want hiking in the afternoons, and a nice hot shower in the evenings plus decent rest with the zero percent possibility of being attacked by a bear because “dammit Jake, you left that leftover lox and bagels out instead of burying it, you lazy son of a bitch.”

It’s the kind of place you go to when you don’t want the sound of traffic or the annoying pitch of car horns, but instead the calming effects of sweet melodies from surrounding rivers.

I’m not kidding.

There are no motorized vehicles allowed here.

To top it off, the architecture is so unique in the sense that the place has been built off of its own natural resources – right down to the food with farm to plate dining, spa treatments with tropical rain saunas, and pretty epic wooden beams aged 100+ years old.

Yeah.

Musings Episode 67: Resilience…

Going through some old DVDs I had stowed away I ended up coming across the movie Alfie (2004) this weekend – the one with Jude Law. Thought it’d be some pretty good background noise so popped it into the PS3 and continued organising.

There’s a funny little thing in the film where Alfie’s constantly expanding his vocabulary via a “word calendar,” where each day of the year provides a new word inclusive of definition for the user’s education – and entertainment.

Alfie mid-film arrives at the word “resilience.”

Whether in terms of substance, subject, or object, the definition of the word pretty much means one thing – the ability to “bounce back” or recover quickly after being stretched, bent, knocked back, or encountering difficult or pressing situations.

Musings Episode 67: Resilience

Resilience really is something, when you think about it. It’s a quality that grows over time, slowly progressing yet never ceasing to improve its form.

What’s the clear-cut, well-defined stuff that actually makes resilience, in the psychological sense though?

The ability to regulate emotion.

Keeping your head in check and spirits high.

Optimism.

Looking at failure as feedback, instead of a setback.

Or, as I like to simply put it, the fine tuned ability to hone in and look through the clouds, realizing the outlined light past them – you know what I’m talking about – throw on a pair of shades and you can see it crystal clear.

Starting off, building up resilience can be a bit like converting putty to chewing gum.

Think on that for a minute – putty will shape and form to whichever way it’s pushed – no resistance, no independence, no “spine.” Putty is pliable, you can work with it easily – but it’s not much use when you need to get a heavy-duty job done, and it’s not much use when a bit of rain comes along – it deteriorates quite quickly if it doesn’t get a chance to dry. It’s for the finish work.

Now think about chewing gum. Chewing gum starts out soft. It’s also easy to shape however you want…but the more you chew, the tougher it becomes. Chew it long enough and eventually it becomes so tough it hurts your jaw – its resilience to your teeth trying to deteriorate it builds up slowly but surely. Burst its bubble and it comes back stronger.

This is where you ask yourself – is your resilience like putty – or gum?

Are you the type of person to wallow in pain, the past – or are you the type to build yourself up and out of those things, focus on what really matters?

Your resilience is your key to success. Your management of emotions is your key to success. Your ability to focus on what matters, and forget what’s useless is your ticket to a relentless drive and desire to consistently go forward in life.

Your resilience is another muscle to build among the endless amount of both large and small muscles you already have – only difference is it’s a mental one.

For The Weekenders: NoMad Bars, Raising The Roof, Japanese Street Food

Hey everyone, hope you’ve all been having a great week and a great weekend. This week for me has been all about one thing – being as stress free as possible…and it’s been working out quite well.

Really when you think about it, the whole point of life is to enjoy it as much as possible, not just by yourself but also by being around good company and even better friends. I may write, and write….and write about a lot of great places to go and things to see – but really in the end it all boils down to seeing (most of) those things with the people who matter most in your life. Enjoy.

For The Weekenders: NoMad Bars, Raising The Roof, Japanese Street Food

Lately I’ve been craving something that you just can’t get unless you’re actually there – Japanese street food.

But wait – actually, you can, over at Azasu – the one place in NY you can honestly say has legit J-land street food, sometimes with a twist. This is the place to go when you’ve got four or five friends who want a good night out, with good food, and even better drinks.

So what kind of street food are we talking exactly? Oh, you know, the usual – Karaage, gyoza, sukiyaki, and of course, my personal favorite, takoyaki. Here’s what I suggest ordering though:

It’s gonna go like this – first things first, book a reservation for said friends. Ask for a big table if you’re doing it up proper. Start simple – order of gyoza (pork – or tofu, for those vegetarian friends), bit of egg salad (doused in Japanese mayo and spicy karashi mustard), and some asazuke – pickled vegetables (much tastier than you may think.

If none of those suit your taste buds, they’ve got loads of loads of other options. Next thing – for Christ’s sake, order a drink and take a load off man. Check out the variety of different Chuhai they have – Chuhai is very much like a wine cooler but stronger, in a can – and really packs a wallop, with some pretty tasty flavours, such as oolong tea, ume plum, calpico, orange, grapefruit, and many more.

I recommend no more than a couple of these though, as they also provide a killer hangover if not careful.

Then comes the main meal – hopefully you’ve not filled up too much on appetizers and drink, and are ready to try some of Azasu’s delicious dishes. My advice? Stuff your face as much as you can – though the menu is straightforward, there are many tasty options to choose from.

If you want something light and fried, go with J-style fish/chicken and chips – nanban – aka tempura-fried (a light coating of breading) fish or chicken complete with crinkle cut fries and tartar sauce.

For The Weekenders NoMad Bars Raising The Roof Japanese Street Food, Rego's Life For The Weekenders NoMad Bars Raising The Roof Japanese Street Food, For The Weekenders NoMad Bars Raising The Roof Japanese Street Food Rego's Life, Rego's Life, For The Weekenders, Rego's Life For The Weekenders, For The Weekenders Rego's Life, The NoMad Bar, Azasu, Roof at Park South, new york nightlife, nightlife, bars, japanese food

If that doesn’t suit you and you feel like a bit of spice, be sure to check out their curry and rice dishes, with choices of additional toppings sukiyaki beef and menchi katsu. Hint – always go for the sukiyaki beef, as it melts in your fucking mouth.

Finish off with some chocoyaki or dororich coffee jelly, and you’ve got yourself a full stomach, nice buzz, and plenty of laughs with plenty of friends – some new and old.

But let’s say you wanna catch some fresh air with friends instead, or just really want a stunning view of the city with an excellent alcoholic drink consisting of gin.

Roof at Park South‘s got you covered with this one.

I know, another roof top bar, but hear me out – every time I recommend a rooftop bar – they only get better. I’m one that’s all about great atmosphere, excellent food, and hangover free drinks – I’d never steer you wrong buddy.

So here’s the deal, bring a large group of friends and make sure you dress decent – this is one of those places you won’t mind looking snazzy at. Order up a round of Mint Billys, casually followed by some Airmail – that last one’s a drink, by the way.

The drinks here are pretty stiff, so you’ll wanna order up some proper bar food to maintain a nice even “buzz” – what makes Roof’s bar food different from the rest? Each dish is specifically made to complement each and every cocktail on the menu – meaning an epic blend of flavours experienced each visit. If you’re a fan of red meat (like myself), go with the Wagyu beef or Lamb Polpetta and watch as each bite melts in your mouth.

If you’re not a fan of red meat – there’s always plenty of other alternatives with seafood, vegetables, and dairy (like Vermont Goat Cheese Al Forno). Lastly – sit back and enjoy around the fire.

If you haven’t been here yet, you’re missing out on a very important part of your life.

This last one’s for when you’ve finally landed that date you’ve been vying for with that perfect 10 you met at a pretty upscale social function. The NoMad is the go to spot for when you want to impress, without looking like you’re even trying.

How so? Well – this fucking thing breeds class – and it outright gorgeous.

Seriously – and I use the adjective gorgeous rather sparingly. The care and detail put into this place you notice the minute walking in – right down to the staircase – will have you thinking you stepped into your very own custom made lounge by the designer named…..name a famous person.

Now hang on – don’t let the looks of this place fool you – you won’t be walking into some pretentious snob fest. The atmosphere is incredibly laid back and the food selection is just as humble as it is tasty, with classic choices that have a unique spin like chicken pot pie with black truffle and foie gras, bacon wrapped hot dogs, and dry aged cheddar atop perfectly made burgers.

But if your date’s not into that, that’s okay too – they have some more “upscale” options like skirt steak, striped bass, and scotch olives (a must try).

…and for dessert? The list goes on, from candy bars (literally) to cookies and cream ice cream.

Where the real fun begins is skimming the drink menu and noticing all the interesting names. Musings Episode 66: Introspection…

So apparently, this is my 200th post.

WOO.

Life has been very interesting, over the past month or so. In going through a bit of writer’s burnout, though it has disrupted my work flow, it’s also given me time to really just sit back and think on a few things. Think on nothing, but think on everything. That sort of grey area where you have everything and nothing figured out at the same time.

At the moment, I’m more of the latter than the former.

At the moment, I’m more wrapped up in avoiding stress as much as possible and finding everything and anything that’s constructive to keep me in a good mood.

Sometimes it’s a bit of a task – but really, times like these are moments when you can actually grade yourself on how well you cope with life.

Eventually, you just get to a point where you’re fucking tired.

Tired of stressing out, tired of focusing on the negative, tired of concerning yourself with solutions…tired of worrying, tired of having highs and lows – just, tired.

I’ve been told before by many I have a way with words – something I pride myself in.

I enjoy helping people find solutions and apparently judging by past experience aren’t too shabby at giving someone a pep talk to make them feel better.

….but what happens when the motivator needs motivation?

What happens when the person who talks everyone else up needs a pep talk themselves?

I’m slowly starting to acknowledge not all the time do I actually take the time to stop and sort my own wandering thoughts out, and understand that can be an unhealthy habit – probably why the writer’s burnout happened in the first place.

It’s been a while since I’ve properly just stopped everything and checked under my own mind’s hood to make sure the engine’s still in check – hence now, neglect has that “check engine” light flashing.

But once it’s all sorted out, everything will be running like new again – a person can go through these moments and think it’s the end of the world, when in fact it really is just a moment that’ll soon pass.

Kind of reminds me of the adage “this too shall pass.”

After a while you realize it – whatever’s going on – a mental block, a situation, an argument, even your own insecurities or thoughts running wild – it all comes to an end.

Eventually, you just get so tired of dwelling you really don’t give a fuck anymore.

Eventually, instead of doing what so many others are expected to do under stress, sometimes the best thing is to just laugh or chuck it in the fuck it bucket and move on.

Why?

Because at that moment, it’s the only thing that makes sense to do.

Be kind to yourself by being kind to your body and your mind – don’t stress. You’ll only make yourself sick – take some time out to really get to know you, and eventually nothing else will matter.

You’ll find yourself not worrying about outcomes or reactions, others opinions or even next week – you’ll learn to filter.

Keep focusing on sorting your own self out, focusing on what you want, and nothing else. Sort yourself out first, and you can help sort out others after.

Take a little time to listen to who matters most – you.

One more thing – I know I’ve been slack on the For The Weekenders posts – bear with me – there’s a pretty awesome one coming your way this Thursday. Promise.

As always…

Stay awesome.

Musings Episode 65: Sleep and Success

Sleep is one of those things people either get too much or too little of. I’ve always been in the group of the latter. Never been one to oversleep, makes me feel unproductive.

But sleep, is actually one of many critical keys to success.

Oddly enough there is more and more information out there about how employers these days don’t necessarily understand that and have a tendency to push their employees to the limits.

Yet what they don’t realize is right in front of them – adequate rest leads to more productivity. It’s the same when people take breaks more often during work – they can function better…and considering the human brain really only concentrates on something for no more than 15-17 minutes, this makes perfect sense.

Adequate sleep doesn’t just help you focus better though – it also keeps your weight down, among many other things. Throughout the day, a toxin builds up in your spine, and while you rest, and only while you rest, does it release. So lack of rest causes the body to stress, which puts on weight.

Getting enough rest allows better mental and physical alertness, a heightened sense of awareness, sharper thinking, and a better mood.

Not everyone is depressed because of things that go on in their life – but because of overworking and under resting. It’s so elementary.

But alas, with a simple solution comes a simple reason – exploitation of a vulnerability. What’s lacking in some companies today is consideration – consideration of your fellow man – in his work, his home life, and his own personal well being.

Get enough rest and you’ll start to see small but important things change in your life for the better. Take care of yourself first, and it becomes much easier to take care of everything else.

On the flip side, oversleep can be a negative too. Going into too much of a dormant state can cause you to be lethargic and become lazy.

10 hours is the limit for me – and that’s only if I’m really tired. Other than that a good 8 hours works out fine.

In fitness, it’s ESPECIALLY important to get adequate rest so the muscles you’ve been working can heal up at a much faster rate – you don’t grow in the gym, but instead while you’re asleep.

Too much rest though and just eating will cause you to store fat.

So really all in all it boils down to moderation. Do anything in moderation and you’ll be alright. Eat in moderation, sleep, work, etc…just make sure you don’t overdo it – or neglect it.

As always…

Stay awesome.
